I was leaning towards this approach. The big moves needed to be made in the offseason and then they would have the Cap space. Leafs have very little draft currency left.
Years ago when Marner was negotiating his contract I posted on here that these young players have to understand that making an extra $1M, a few hundred thousand after taxes per year; could be the difference between a Cup or not.
My assertion at the time was also that I saw a structured team that I feared would be like the Oilers of the early 2000s (If my decades are correct) and/or SJ Sharks who couldn't win in the playoffs but would be entertaining losers.
They were either too young or personally financially driven to care. Those extra few million across their career once they retire will mean relatively little, IF they want to be winners. It is just the reality of the Cap Era.
Brad did about what I would have, maybe even more than I would have tbh since this dance has gone on long enough. Until they shed big dollars and subtract those who can't get it done when it matters most, this team is forever handcuffed.
THe additions are Domi, Reaves, Bert, Boosh and Edmunson. If they play as they can, these are the "right types" come playoffs. No need to overpay further. They get it done or they don't.
