I think the Leafs losing both games to the Bruins was a clear sign to not invest further into this team. Not only do you have to overcome a decent team, you also need to overcome the severe bias from officiating and Parros. The Leafs aren't even as good as Boston or Florida and they need to be 1.5x better just to have a fair chance.
Tre didn't have ammunition to do anything this deadline. 1 player wasn't going to make a difference either, maybe Shesterkin ... so why bother doubling down again spending more?

They are going to give this group one last look with keefe and likely shake things up in off-season. having the cap space in the off-season will help (and thus why tre was only giving 1 yr deals)

Boston won all 4 games against the Leafs this year, in fact Leafs haven't beaten them since 2022 and Florida nearly swept the Leafs last year in the playoffs.

Sometimes accepting reality is the best move a team can do to not damage the future chasing a pipe dream.

I don’t remember that and Vegas isn’t abusing anything
Then you have a short memory. The Leafs were negotiating to pick up Gustav Nyquist for a low pick, even though he was injured, because he'd be playoff ready, so he was basically free for the team that traded for him. Bettman stepped in and told the Leafs if they traded for Nyquist he wouldn't be playoff eligible, and someone else ended up making that trade. It ended up being meaningless, but still; it's a quick reminder that abusing the Kucherov rule and using "injured" players to circumvent the cap is okay if you're a franchise favored by Bettman, but anyone else? Play by the rigged rules, suckers!
