Having so much faith in a losing core is bizarre.

I like Rielly so it's not about him but Dubas' behavior with his core players is low-quality GMing. It's been like that from day one.

His biggest flaw is the inability to separate himself from the players. Stop being their friend and do your job. These guys are milking you for big money, showing minimal results, and are incredibly inconsistent during the playoffs. I'm afraid Dubas is quickly becoming a bright hockey mind that's a complete doormat when it comes to the "stars" on this team.

Most GMs have 1-2 guys they are enamored by. Usually their cornerstone superstars (i.e. Matthews). Dubas seems to have 6-7 that he will do anything for even if they have done nothing to earn his trust. It's borderline pathetic.

LOL, he's shipped out a bunch of players every year.

He's just smart enough to know he's not winning a Marner trade.

I'm tempted to move Marner to Minny if they have interest

Marner + Holl going to Minny which is ~13M going out

Fiala + Dumba + Pens 2021 1st
Fiala gets a 8 year 7M extension and we have Dumba 1 year at 6M to give lilijgren 1 year to play on the 3rd pairing.

We extend Rielly 8 years 7M and then next year we move Muzzin or Brodie of Dumba is good and extend him to 6M deal if he plays good

Remember when I said defensive zone faceoffs should be taken by people other than our best offensive player?

A shut down guy would probably help there.

34 had a 60% Offensive zone face-off percentage. It's not like he was being buried in d-zone starts by Keefe.

Is he smart enough to know that you don’t have to win the Marner trade to make the team better?

Ah, unfortunately he doesn't believe in the idea that losing trades makes the team better.

Maybe Lou would have traded him for 3 2nd round picks and then they'd luck into a 2nd round series after playing Tristan Jarry.

He's never even considered shipping out anyone from the losing core.

Not a single player.

Look at all of the cup champions. They have never been this blindly loyal to "core" players. Washington got rid of Green and Semin. Tampa got rid of Drouin.

This devotion to the core forwards was okay when the cap was going up. It's unrealistic now. I think Dubas is a good GM but his devotion to his core is ridiculous.

If he was in Masai's position, Derozan would still be playing for the Raptors and they wouldn't have a championship.

Why would Fiala get $7 million? He is coming off $3 million a year. You pay him more than Nylander?

Fiala is a little worse than Nylander in production these past two years.

He gets 7M x 8 while Nylander got 6.96 x 6 with 1/3 of the 1st year being a hold out. The caps also a bit higher than when WN got his deal

7M is probably the tops but if we could get him for 6.5ish on 7 years I'd do that too.

Are they going to ask for Nylander's cap hit or Nylander's money? He really signed for 7.5 per season.

Nylander got I guess 7.5 x 6 but really I just forget the first year of his deal and treat it like a 7x5 deal as he was a waste of a roster spot in 2019.

Fiala though has inconsistency and hasn't shown up well in the playoffs like Nylander has the past two years.

I think we could even get a 6 x 6 type deal if we wanted to keep the cap hit down as Fiala.

I wouldn't go over 7 for him at 8 years.

It's probably a dream scenario as we won't trade marner

I'd deal Sandin + Robertson for Fiala and sign him 6x6 but we don't have the cap space I believe to make that type of deal. Of kerfopt was taken on the deal then it would be doable and we'd be adding a quality high skilled player into the top 6

Not that I disagree, but none of those players were ever "core" on their respective teams. Drouin was hardly anything, and Green and Semin were the loose equivalents of auxiliary. Green was also a cap loss and Semin was a culture move. We at least moved Kapanen and Johnsson.

Again not disagreeing with your point just the examples don't match up well IMO. Example - Washington was widely rumored to be in their "final year" before that whole team was blown up when they won it.

Washington had a nickname for their core - Young Guns. It included Ovechkin, Backstrom, Green, and Semin.

They were 100% a part of their initial core.

Drouin is iffy so I'll give you that. He was originally put up as a core piece but only got going at the end. Indeed, Dubas hasn't had to deal with something like that luckily.

Apparently Morgan Rielly is willing to take a little bit less to stay in Toronto. Lebrun projected his contract to be similar to Krug’s (6.5 mil for 7 years). I like it, hopefully the leafs lock him up this summer.

Would be VERY nice to finally have someone take a paycut so we can win. Take one for the team. Set an example for their next contracts.

Which i still believe they will sign relatively close to what they make now, so they can be a true contender, they have seen what taking the max has done to trying to build a championship team.

That would be a very good contract for the Leafs...seems like the BC kid is loyal to a fault, while the hometown kid Marner bends his team over.

Big time. Someone needs to go first in terms of giving a discount. Lock him up now is we can. Last thing we need is for him to bust out another 70 point season in his contract year, and now his agent has got the dollar signs in his eyes.
