Seattle would have to know that we'd leave Kerfoot unprotected or available to select. They get something extra (whatever that is) for being in the driver's seat and are potentially selecting who they might have taken anyway. Toronto at least gets something back in return (whatever that is).

Should be a hockey trade then I would assume because Toronto can just protect Kerfoot by going 7-3-1.

Why would they give up picks for Kerfoot? We're bribing them to take him not the other way around

I'll be unbelievably happy if it isn't us giving up the picks in this scenario

A few reasons:

1) They may want him more than Holl/Dermott. We don't have to leave him exposed, and I don't think the Leafs have any motivation to want him gone (even the cap savings between him and a proper 3C replacement would be minimal at best).
2) They save almost 2 mill in signing bonus this year by having us trade him to them instead of them selecting him. That has value.
3) They get Engvall and Kerfoot instead of just Kerfoot. That also has value.

I am not saying anything crazy, but if we could get a 3rd round pick or a 4th + late round pick, that helps when we are lacking picks.

That doesn't entirely work if Toronto wants to retain Holl and Dermott though. I'd guess Toronto would be receiving some form of futures in addition to cap space. Better than nothing (similar to Pittsburgh with today's trade).

The quote:
"A source suggests Justin Holl is expected to be protected, making it likely the Leafs have a side deal worked out with Seattle that has Kerfoot ending up with the Kraken."

So in the end it won't matter about protection since they will have a trade/deal worked out with Seattle for them to take Kerfoot.

I'm a bit nervous if this is the case. Francis' ask from Montréal not to take Allen was reportedly a 1st.

I really don't think Holl/Dermott are worth paying an extra pick to protect. But I guess we'll have to wait and see -- maybe its the other way around and we're the ones getting assets back.

(Also, I rarely say this, but props to Bergevin for getting Price to waive his NMC. I doubt Seattle takes on that contract, or at least they shouldn't).

The Leafs would only lose one, and it is not like replacing Kerfoot is any easier than replacing Dermott/Holl.

I don't think the Leafs play any games unless Seattle wants to compensate them. We don't have picks to spare and we are losing a good role player either way. Let Seattle figure out who they want the most, or if they want a guy we may protect now (like Kerfoot), then they have to make it worthwhile to us.

Partially motivated by cap space - Holl and Dermott combine for the same cap that Kerfoot does. I'd be happy with the return you suggested (3rd or 4th plus a late pick) and hope that's feasible. I'm thinking both teams played ball and will be happy with the outcome.

Actually Kyle put us in the Marleau situation when he signed 3 forwards with Marner pending for half the cap. We had plenty of cap space while Lou was here.
This is rich. Literally every analyst and talking head at the time questioned the third year at the time of the signing due to the big threes upcoming extensions.
Anything to force feed a dying narrative eh?

If Dubas gives up assets for Seattle to take the player that they reportedly wanted from us anyway, just to save Justin Holl, he’s officially lost the plot.

My assumption?

We go 7-3-1. We do a deal with Seattle where we trade them Kerfoot for pick(s) and (expansion considerations) where they take Engvall or something.

I totally thought that we were going to LTIR him for the 3rd year.

then when I found out about the 4.5 late bonus poison pill so they couldn’t move him. Ughhhh lou boned us

If Seattle takes Price, then Tarasenko. Maybe they are planning to trade for Marner.
Have to admit, that’s a pretty good trio for an expansion team.

If that's the deal then bye Kerfoot and Engvall for cap space and a pick. I just hope if they're giving away those 2 they have something lined up trade/fa signing. Not a big fan of Engvall at all but kerfoot is decent.

And yes I figure kerfoot is going if any forward is but it'll be interesting to see what Dubas has lined up.

That seems like it'd be an easy condition to meet. They don't even need to play him. Just put him in their lineup for a game and roll 11 forwards.

I guess basically NYI doesn't give up the extra pick if Arizona LTIRetires him. But this is Arizona we're talking about, I don't think they're putting players on LTIR to spend over the cap.

Probably they take Engvall or Malgin and we trade them Kerfoot for picks. We get picks, they get two guys they can put in their lineup and don't have to pay Kerfoot's bonus.
This makes absolutely zero sense on any rational level. Anyone remember Florida and Columbus trying to outsmart the draft process with Vegas? This is that level bad. Why would we give them 2 mid-20's roster players at the age when breakouts typically happen and only take back middling picks for one? Makes absolutely zero sense on any asset management level.

Let them pick ONE player, and move on afterwards. Either our 8th forward or 4th D. Leave Simmonds and Spezza exposed, along with Holl and Dermott....and move one once you lose one of the D men.

If I'm the Leafs, I say to the Kraken that we choose who you can have for allowing them to take Hakstol from us. Then tell them they can have Dermott. Sandin replaces Dermott. Zero roster impact. Leafs have $8 million in space left after, plus all assets.

Seriously, I don't get the infatuation with trying to play the system. The only ones who didn't get burned with Vegas are the ones who let them pick ONE player.

I'm on the O train.

(Oleksiak)

Id be careful of him, he was a bottom pair guy until he was paired with Heiskanen and now he's a 2nd pair?

Reminds me a bit of Holl and Muzzin

They might not be thinkers but they’ve got truculence

Never underestimate how important truculence is, makes this joint exciting most of the time

I hope so, I'm going to cry if we're giving up assets to protect Holl and Dermott (and I like both those guys)

More thinking of 4/5 with Oleksiak. He has always been a that level. If Dermott gets taken, then go after O if the numbers work $$$. But if he's looking for mid/top pairing (2/3)$$$, see ya.

Id be looking for a couple of solid vet bottom pair types that shoot right and left you could blood Sandin and Liljegren with

I think it's time to start getting some more youth mixed into the lineup

I still think it’s going to be. We give them kerfoot. In a trade and they take something else. Then they don’t re pay the bonus.

Agreed to an extent - just not an all rookie bottom pairing. My hope is that Seattle take Dermott and Sandin is promoted. I doubt there will be much or any bit of a drop off. Sandin needs regular reps and minutes to play at this level to get accustomed to it. I can see them trying to bring back Bogo possibly as a vet partner. With Lily in the wings should an injury occur.

How's NZ? Sounds NWO'ish there.....

Weather is bloody exciting I can tell you

Bogo would be a good signing, I'm looking for that calming vet presence you can staple a rookie to
