Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

His first big trade and it might include Risto... Yeesh. I hope he gets it right. Laughton makes a lot of sense, I hope he switch back to center without issue, which I think is the goal here. Pro scouting better get this right.

Risto is growing on me. He's had a bit of an analytical rebound in recent years

I'd they can get both guys without breaking the bank in terms of assets I'll be happy with them

Can't see this happening at all. Risto hates the Leafs as well. When the media are in doubt, they default to Risto to the Leafs. Unless you're John Shannon, and you're still trying to get the scoop on Lalongo to the Leafs.

I mean maybe when there was a BUF/TOR rivalry but that's been quite a few years now.

I don't think Friedman needs to make up anything either, he's basically the top insider since Bobby Mack retired.

There's only been 1 player that's refused to be traded to a team because they "hate" the team, that I know of, and that would be one Josh Gorges, and mind you Frazer McLaren embarrassed him on national television. I don't think that's a thing, most players want to win, especially someone like Risto who hasn't sniffed the playoffs.

Just a reminder, most players on bad teams don't look like good players, until they actually play on a good team and turns out they can actually play.. See OEL on Florida & now Toronto.

Anyways, still don't think Leafs need to be big game hunting on D like that, some depth d-man and two top 9 forwards will do.

Pretty sure Sundin refused to be traded to montreal

If Mike Peca can make amends and play for the Leafs years ago, I'm sure Risto can as well. Also he only really had a thing with Kadri back when he was with Buffalo. He doesn't have a NTC so he doesn't really have much of a say either.

The Leafs project to have a little less than $3 million in cap space by the deadline, so it will take a little cap gymnastics to fit Laughton in at full price ($3 million AAV) for this season and next; given the level of interest in Laughton, I don’t think the Flyers will be looking to retain salary on him. If the return is sufficient enough, perhaps the Flyers would take back a player like David Kampf and the remaining two years on his contract at a $2.4 million cap hit.

Waive Dewar and Reaves ...

The actual article is a first or Minten.
"...a first or Fraser Minten."
I'd be fine with Minten being given up for a winger/center who Torts has the 'A' on.
Used mostly as a center now, but he's has been a center.
Just don't want him taking face-offs on the PK.

Yeah, I checked his numbers out a few days ago, and surprisingly, they were okay.

Laughton is still a bit of an issue, and if we're to go for a forward in the deal as well, my preference would still be Cates.

Absolutely,

But not Crouse, Bjugstand and Kesselring. The latter I think is rising too quickly in ranks with Durzi out. Clearly a top 4, young, etc, moving forward.

I do think we'd have a chance at Maata though, who has been playing some solid, quiet hockey. And I'd like to think McBain is a possibility. And I don't think The quesiton mark for me would be Hayton: McBain would be a great 4C and on our club, Hayton looks the perfect provisional 3C while we figure out where and what's going to happen to Tavares after 07/01/25.

Both centers are from Toronto. That's not essential but factual. And both are playing good two-way hockey.

Then I'd kick tires on Zetterlund from San Jose.

And if Ristolainen is coming here - great partner for Maata? I think we "insist" on Hathaway coming as well.
Maata and Hayton :thumbu: Hayton and Marino would be better. Or Strome and Trouba but the double retention on Trouba plus the final year might make things too pricey. Unless Mitch gives a discount of course:)

Morgan Geekie would be a perfect 3C for Toronto.

He’s young, shoots right, cheap, analytics darling, decently physical, big frame, has enough offense to keep up but not get overpaid.

I don’t know if Boston would trade him but apparently they’re looking to move off young pending UFA’s in Frederic and Brazeau. Maybe he can be had for a futures package. I’d pay a decent amount to get him and either of Frederic and Brazeau (or all 3).

Something like:

Minten, 2025 2nd for Geekie and Brazeau.

Or Minten, 25 2nd, Danford for Geekie, Brazeau, Frederic

Think we’ll see any moves during the break or will GMs treat this as an unofficial trade freeze?

1-He played with poehling and hattaway 25 %of time so 75 % he wasn't. But hes got 37,5% of his production with those player

2nd most was farabee and brink : A line who was not pretty good together

3rd was frost/ michkov : by far the worst line and that line but outplayed most of the time

2- You know Laughton got vote for selke last year? pretty surprising from a middle 6 foward who can't defend like you saying

3- I'm not saying hes the best option but clearly an upgrade
This highlights the problem with casual hockey fans who just bring up meaningless stats without context.

He had Selke votes last year!! I think he will be just fine. Just plan to surround him with reasonable talent, puck possession and heaviness.

I sound like a broken record. Separate 35/16. Get 88 on the third line with Laughton and McMann. Spread scoring!!!!

Knies Matthews Domi
Xxx JT Marner
McMann Laughton(example) Nylander

I dont know why Utah would think of moving him but I saw a Leafs related article about trading for Kesselring and he's someone I would give up alot to acquire right now.

6'5 RHD who can do a bit of everything and only signed for 1.4m for this season and next. Again, I doubt this guy is actually being shopped but if so, he's someone that is really starting to look like a real difference maker. You might have to give up what seems like alot this minute but if this player is actually legit, you could be laughing having acquired a youngish two way RHD.

I see the name Jared McCann out there and it makes my blood boil.

2021

To PIT
Filip Hallander (playing in Sweden now)
7th round pick

To TOR
Jared McCann

Initially Dubas looks great for pulling off this trade (without hindsight).

For some strange reason Holl is protected in the expansion draft, and the 3rd line C you just traded for is not protected.

McCann goes on to be the Kraken's all time franchise leader in goals and points. :eek3:

I mean... Knies at $5.5, Tavares at $5.5 and Marner at $12.5 (with deferral), is the same dollars, and seems more realistic to me, than their numbers.
Knies isn’t singing a penny under the slavkosky contract . A long term deal will put him at $7 million plus.

I'm a big time Dubas hater but Holl was excellent value at that point in time. Holl-Muzzin was the Leafs shutdown line for the entire 2020-21 season and Holl still had 2 years left at 2M. I think most teams would take a 21 minute/night 29 year old RHD with 2 years at 2M over a 25 year old LW with a career high 14G/35P with 1 year remaining at 2.9M.

Unfortunately Holl's season was a apparition and McCann broke out immediately.
