Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

IF he came here, who do we see him playing with?
If he signs... the lines would likely be something like this... when and if everyone ever gets healthy.

Knies Matthews Marner
Saad Tavares Nylander
McMann Domi Robertson
Lorentz Kampf Patches.

Now... I think it's time to mix things up though

Knies Matthews Domi
Saad Tavares McMann
Nylander 3C Marner
Lorentz Kampf Patches.

Really jealous of what Calgary was able to do.

I don't know if Philly coveted Kuzmenko for the Michkov connection, not much we can do but if the cost was a 2nd this year, 7th in a later draft, Robertson and something like Jarnkrok or Domi, I would have done it.

We needed a middle 6 and we lack scoring depth, I really believe Farabee has a lot more to show than he did in Philly the last while...guys with actual tread on their tires and have years in the league ahead of them vs the usual rental shit.

That was a total WTF moment by the Flyers... It was a terrible return for those guys, and probably every team in the league beats that return on an open market, including us. I can only imagine that for whatever reason, they wanted Kuzmenko to play with Michkov. Who called who here? Briere called Calgary and asked for Kuzmenko, who's been scratched a ton... and what did he say... what do you want... and then said ok? I mean Calgary fleeced them here... though both Farabee and Frost weren't doing well this year...but that could easily be the second year Torts for you.

If I’m Tre I’m taking advantage here and trying to get Cates in a similarly cheap deal

Between Edmonton and Toronto, those are the two spots that likely can revitalize his career, both teams have open slots in the top 6 to be taken.

Compared to Vegas + NJD + Tampa

Wow, great deal by the Flames. Could turn out to be a huge steal by Conroy.

Wish our management group would get off of their ass’ and do something.

Leafs are mad with Domi at 3,5M but claim a steal with Farabee at 5M who did nothing more last 3 years?!?!?!

Farabee is a cap dump with 3 year remaining

Kuzmenko is also a cap dump but his salary is over after next one

so by far the worst cap dump+ 2nd pick pelletier vs frost ( who had the same kind of production than pelleyier but a C... Its a high risk trade by calgary

How good would 8 year term with Marner and Matthews look right now?

I do not miss Du(m)bas(s).

Terrible. In fact not signing them 8 years would have been ideal if Tre already had Marner locked up 8 years and Matthews signed for 8 on his most recent deal.

8 years out of their ELC would have them expiring right in the thick of that big jump.

All Saad needs to do is look at what players like Mikheyev, Lyubushkin, and Schenn got on the open market after playing in Toronto.

He will get paid next year if he wants to by finishing out the season here. And the Leafs could use him.

Not sure what extremely overrated means, I think most saw him as a good suitor for the 3rd line role spot to add speed, 2-way value and an upgrade over our center situation that's quite bad at the moment. His cap hit is fair, he's only 25 years old and a RFA at the end of the season. He's from the area. Seemed like a good fit for a mild price.

Who adds so much more to our roster?
Overrated probably not the right word but I swear Frost is brought up in every other trade proposal around here for which seems like forever. He's a pretty lazy player, seems redundant with Domi here and Frost's probably looking to double his AAV after this season. Flyers have acres of cap space and weren't willing to pay him, kinda telling. The player is more of the same profile we already have. Glad management passed.

Marner would be coming up for renewal on that last jump
Matthews would be coming up in the 2nd jump

So 11.6M on Matthews would be happening right now and 10.93M on Marner for a bit longer.

Now that Marner's agent knows what the cap is for 3 years from now, they're almost certainly going to try to incorporate it into the negotiations vs the only knowing the cap on a year by year basis.

Yeah, but I'd rather not elaborate in case any of his devoted posters turn this into a multi-page argument.

It's weird to see a league that's supposedly so prosperous need a mechanism such as revenue sharing

It still is better to have them locked in at a 95 mill cap than a 115 mill cap. Even despite the projections.

Also like I said, had Tre pushed for 8 years on Matthews and had Marner already locked in than it would’ve been the most favourable of any of these hypothetical scenarios.

Weird take.

Pelletier has 21 career NHL points. Frost is bigger, is a C, and has a career high 46 points... they aren't the same. Frost isn't having a great year, but that's typical for Torts. Frost is the piece Leafs fans wouldn't mind having as a 3C... good value for that.

Farabee had 50 points last year... struggling under Torts this year, and he's suddenly a cap dump? LOL

Nylander's contract (13%) would be equivalent of 14.75M in the 2027-28 season.

Marner's ask is going to be 14M+. If we can't bring him down below 12.5M-12M they need to let him walk.

Marner coming up for renewal sucks right now, just as much as it would suck for year 3 of those projections, he'd simply be making what he is exactly right now for a few more years which is advantageous to us, him making 10.93M when the cap is 95.5M and 104.5M helps.

On the other hand, if we suck this year and they want to make a break from him, there is certainly cap space to make changes.

He was brought up a lot as a buy low player. He's not expensive right now, he's a capable center and from the area. He isn't perfect or amazing. We don't have have a 40 point 25 year old center. Not sure what he has to do with Domi. We'll see how he does in Calgary but I suspect he'll fit in nicely and it'll be another opportunity lost.
