Canes getting better should not concern the Leafs as they should be meeting in the ECF and not the first round, lol.

Always sad to see kids getting their fav player stuff and boom, that player is gone. Really think teams should implement that if the said player is traded within 3 months of getting the jersey, free to bring back and swap another one

I don’t think Guentzel ever wanted to be a Cane though. Like I said Rantanen has ties to the finish players there. He’s more likely to stay especially if they do well. Carolina was also the first team to do deferred salary. So I don’t put it past them to make it work

As for the 1st pick used to dump Monahan, well it will cost them a 1st regardless. So having that extra pick means they get to keep their own.

I agree not all trades work out for the favor of the team but if status quo is not working, making changes might help.

The biggest difference between Florida last 2 year and previous team is not Tkachuk, they changed their identity and they started to play like Barlov as a team. They protecting even better his own zone than they ever did and that's helped Bobrosvky to find back his Vezina game.

and leafs made change and they changed their identity...Dubas/Keefe gone. Treliving build probably the best D leafs had in Matthews era and still have room for improvement. But leafs defending much better than they ever did. They move from an off the rush team to a forechecking team.

Amaizing change of scenary this season when leafs leading
#1 in NHL win % on 1 goal game
#2 in NHL won % when they scored 1st
#1 in NHL when leading after 1 period
#1 in NHL when leading after 2 period

Keeping lead always been a pretty huge issue for leafs and now becoming their #1 Strenght. Its a complete change of identity. They moved from a soft team to a team pretty hard to play against in only 1 season and half under treliving and a half of season under Berube.


Yes trade might help or also just get worst... Exemple just traded Marner last summer like a lot of people was hoping for a similar return of Rantanen, with how thing goes this season with Matthews injury and lack of secondary scoring... Toronto would probably be at best in the same mixes than tampa, boston, ottawa, montreal, detroit right now fighting for their live...but now their in pretty great position to win his first real division title( don't really coint covid19 season) for the 1st time since 1999-2000 even if Matthews missed and/or play hurted like 75-80 % of the season

Its the same core yeah for sure but its not the same team i saw last 8
 
I highly doubt the Canes would be comfortable paying the $14 mill AAV he’s expecting so I expect him to walk.

Also looks like the Avs aren’t done. They are probably going after one of the centres on the Canucks.

Not sure he is in their budget. Colorado and Carolina are both in the same favorable tax range. Ranta wanted more than McKinnon's $12.5M (we think). I can't see Carolina paying more than Colorado was prepared to. I think they traded for the hope to resign him but they will settle for the Cup.
 
Apparently the Canes got deep into discussions for Miller but I guess Rantanen was too good to pass up. I wonder what Vancouver does now, seems likely Miller to NYR happens soon but there's probably another curve ball out there.

As for the Leafs, doesn't seem anything really close. Treliving probably will wait it out until trade deadline.

I wouldn't be surprised if the canes still picked up Miller. They could fit him in if they dealt KK and Roslovic.

Carolina has essentially thrown down the gauntlet. Acquiring Rantanen is massive. I don’t know if the Leafs are capable of making a matching move, or if they even should. Carolina has needed star scoring power, which in theory isn't what the Leafs need (in practice, the star power never shows up). Making smaller acquisitions to shore up our bottom six would do more to even the playing field.

So then I ask, is it worth to overpay to keep a better player, or save yourself abit of money and have a worse team? Colorado can make moves that might make em better, time will tell.

Ultimately, Toronto is going to be in this same position in the summer.

I don't think the Canes make a trade like this if they aren't prepared to have a competitive offer for an extension.

The canes traded for the player and I don't see why he wouldn't continue to ask for the amount the Avs balked at

That's a lot of coin if the rumored ask is true, the Cane's owner isn't renowned for throwing money around either

It's bold, risky but bold

Probably a bit more risk than I'd be willing to stomach 😂

1. Have you consider that maybe Tkachuk is a better fit than Huber and Weegar for the style they believe will help them win in the playoffs?

2. Leafs is no doubt getting better but their structured system/style that they had been playing earlier in the season are starting to fade. Now that could be bc of fatigue or injuries but over their last 10-13 games or so, they are playing closer their past than earlier in the season. Winning due to having better talents than the other teams.

3. What if they did traded MM or MM walks this summer, it all depends on the players coming in and filling roles. As I stated many times, I doubt the Leafs won't make the playoffs if one or even two of AM, MM, Willie, JT and Reilly are traded and replaced with lesser offensive talents players. The Leafs itself is still a good team.

It is the same core and I do hope they are different this playoffs, but as of today, their playoffs performances collectively sucks which is a fact.

If this move works, it really extends there window by quite a bit. Some draft capital they can use at the deadline. If necas can even give 75-80% of rantanen’s production and drury can be a 3C this makes them so much deeper and with a lot of cap space

However if necas reverts to 65 point player and drury busts, this could turn ugly

Either way, props to Colorado’s front office for being proactive on the rantanen situation, let’s see how it pans out now.

I think our match isn't in a move; it's in our core out-competing and out-performing whatever team is on the other side.
