You can give Colorado kudos for having the balls to trade Rantenen, but did they get better from this deal? Personally I don’t think they did. They gave up the best player in the deal. I don’t think Necas + Dury will be on the same teir as Rantenen.

Toronto would be in the same boat, different circumstances, because of the optics of changing it up, but doesn’t mean you’ll become better.

Just my opinion.
No doubt Canes is smiling with what they gave up for Rantanen on this deal.
Interesting to see what else Avs is cooking. Clearing up cap spaces plus getting a young stud like Necas could just be enough for Sid.

What should they've gotten? He is a rental, after all.

Getting Necas, as well as Drury + picks, isn't too bad. The extra cap space is a nice bonus on top.

Rantanen has a 9 point lead on Necas in the scoring race (64pts to 55). Should be interesting to see what the MacKinnon effect looks like on those point totals come the end of the year.

If I were a betting man I'd say Rantanen still ends up ahead, but only by a point or two

Didn't Panthers went to the Finals and then win the Cup the following year after they traded Huber, Weager plus picks for Tkachuk.
Panthers GM got balls and made that trade which seemed to be giving just a bit more to the Flames, but he won that trade hands down even if Huber continues to have 100pts season as Panthers went to TWO Finals winning one after that trade. Thats SEVEN playoffs series win in TWO years while our boys won ONE series in EIGHT years.
Also got to give credits to Tre for getting that trade done as Tkachuk pretty much stated trade me to Panthers or I will walk the following year. Quite amazing that under those circumstances, Tre still managed to get a 100pts winger, a top 2 puck moving Dman and a 1st rounder.

Rantanen is the Tkachuk of this trade...

How many time did Calgary made series since this deal... Hard to say its a good deal when the team struggling since...

I just say making a move doesn't mean its a good onr. Huberdeau/tkachuk... Treliving didn't really jas the choice so he did what he could... They made a hugr deal but could be as much a trade who could destroy a part of the team than a trade who help to reach an other level.

ps 1st pick just been used to dump Monahan contract

Colorado definitely didn’t get better. But they got a pretty good return for someone who priced himself out of Colorado and can walk this summer.

Sakic impresses the hell out of me. No matter what he never lets any player be bigger than the team and he is never one to sit on his hands or get sucked into complacency. There is always a vision for everyone he acquires too - sure not every move pays off (Georgiev) but you gotta take a few Ls along the way to truly get better. I admire his aggressiveness and swift action.

Meanwhile in Toronto we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas.

Without Mackinnon and Makar, is he a 100-point winger still? Necas may hit a new highs in points at about half the price.
Is MacKinnon an Art Ross/MVP candidate still with Necas on his line instead of a big strong power forward who goes into the corners and goes to the net?

Leafs have enough Rantanens, no thank you.

We have no Rantanen's. He gets involved in scrums, he hits, he shows up in the playoffs, and he scores 50+ goals and 100+ points.

Did you know Nathan MacKinnon has only outscored Rantanen 3 times in the playoffs? Rantanen has equaled/outscored him the last 3 years, including their Cup win.

Well first of all, Sakic isn’t the GM. This is Chris McFarlands work.

Colorado wins a cup and the player is a top 5 guy in the league, asks for Draisaitl money which is fair and gets traded. Meanwhile every leaf star bends them over for every penny and our management and ownership doesn't have the balls to move on from them

And yet Colorado didn't want to pay him.

Teams make mistakes. The Leafs didn't want to pay Hyman. Ottawa didn't want to pay Chara - the Bruins benefited greatly.

Besides, Colorado does this a lot. They let Kadri walk and also traded Ryan O'Reilly because he wanted 'too much money' - RoR ended up winning a Conn Smythe with St. Louis.

Tulsky looking to prove himself one of the top GMs in the league. That's quite the steal.

Bold move from the AVS too On one hand, historically they've also had a sharp management group, so they can be given the benefit of the doubt. But also fair to question if giving up that player while you're obviously trying to be competitive with MacKinnon on that deal is the best decision.....

Edit: Tulsky, not Waddle

I think that's exactly right. I think is making a pretty big mistake. Necas is a fine player, but slavishly sticking to a salary structure is all well and good until it makes you a worse team.
