In case you were wondering how bleak the Saints cap situation is: they are currently 50 million over the cap. If they were to release every single player making over $1 million who cutting would create cap space, they would still be 23.5 million over the cap and have only 37 players on their roster

How do they get under the cap if it's that bad? I'm not being sarcastic. I'm generally curious.

(I'm also elated to have Brady around for as long as we can hold on to him. Give Josh some damn continuity for a while.)

It would have to come from restructures and extensions. You can drop $30M just from reworking Derek Carr's contract. Its not as easy to do as Spotrac makes it, but that is primarily how teams will do it.

The Bills for example can save about $10M just from giving Allen a fat bonus check this offseason.

Like the Ravens game, I think the Bills are playing with house money and the Chiefs win. Bills gain a lot of experience for the real runs the next few years.

But doesn't that just kick the cap-hit further down the line? And don't both parties generally have to agree on restructuring/reworking an existing contract?

This thread is the only reason I've been coming on this board recently. The parity gods must come through today and make this happen for the Bills. They are in as good a shape roster and health wise as any team can reasonably expect, with one of the very few game changing QBs in the league. They ARE better than KC right now, beat them earlier in Buf, and they've won in KC a few times already in the McD/Beane/Allen era. It has to be today. Tomorrow is promised to no one.

Correct on both accounts. They have a lot of work to do. They are in a terrible position, but that is their way out….for next season.

Yeah the thing with the saints is they’re so far in all they can do is kick the can down the road and make the situation worse next year. They’re in a hole and all they have is a shovel.

Guess it’s no surprise that the Saints job is the last to be filled. I wouldn’t want to coach knowing the team is in cap hell for years to come.

Welp the game day nerves are settling in nicely. Gotta try to occupy the mind for the next 8+ hours.

I saw an article on espn that said if they set the cap at $275M for 2025 ( up $20M from 24) and they would still be $60M+ over.

They looked at pist june 2 buy outs of their 30+ yr old vets to comply with this.

Why, because und erg Brees ers they back loaded contracts.

Now they need right the ship with the cap which means being a skeleton team for thr next 2 yrs at least

I dont see many first time head coaches wanting to be scapegoat in this team bottoming out thr next 2-4 yrs only to get fired even though he had hands tied due to the cap

Time to bring out all the weapons. Cooper has to be at least somewhat involved today. Gotta give Josh some time to take some shots down the field. Cook is going to have to be a factor too. Like another poster said, tomorrow is not promised. It’s go time. Brady has to call the best f***ing game of his life today. It’s our time, let’s end the dynasty and reach our destination

Post June 1 cuts don't help them at all. You have to be cap compliant by start of the new league year in March

Just win this. Don't care if we lose the SB by a historic margin, we're in a great spot to claim one for the next 4-6 years. Just don't be 0-for-goddamn-4 against Kermit after today

Yes. They have to gradually get out this mess, by kicking the can down the road with some contracts while cutting others. It's not a one offseason fix.

Signing Carr was quite simply the most stupid and baffling decision that they are going to pay for, especially given Carr is just an average starting QB, nothing special.
