Bunkis last night proposed Rielly + Minten for JT Miller. Makes some sense but wishful thinking.

Makes us really bare defensively. Rielly is going through a lull but he'll get better. I think we need to add a D-man who is more effective on the PP. We need someone like a Vince Dunn.

In fairness, Bunkis did say that they could then look for a puck carrying dman to fill Rielly's role. At this point it is 50/50 whether Rielly rediscovers his game. He was not very good a year ago either, just not this bad.

Also, Miller is beefing with EP40. I'd wager A LOT of money that our stars are more like Pettersson than they are like Miller. We will essentially re-create the same situation that exists in Vancouver, except we'll be stuck with an older and likely worse Miller than Vancouver currently is

1. A third line centre who can score, but also provide stability to our third line. Domi doesn't provide it.
2. A replacement for Hakanpaa, if he's not healthy.

Out of all the guys Brock Nelson, is quite easily my favourite. He's good on both sides of the puck. Has proven to be effective in the playoffs. 60 point guy. Price wouldn't be crazy.

Scott Laughton: I like the prospect of having him at 1.5M for 1/2 years (after retention). Definitely not as talented as others on the board, but he's cost-effective, physical, and agitating.

J-G Pageau: Has proven to be effective in the playoffs. His contract is bearable. He's a great penalty killer as well, leading the islanders. Also, one of the best face-off men in the league at 58%

Yellow Zone (Schmaltz, Gourde): Schmaltz is certainly the best on the board here, I just don't know if I could fathom the price of paying for somebody like that. Gourde: Well he is a pest, and a hard worker, he has taken some major steps back offensively and isn't as effective defensively as say a Pageau/Laughton.

Red Zone (the rest): Granlund - Excellent season, definitely a guy who can put up points. My issue, is that stylistically, he's piss poor defensively, and I don't love running a line with Domi and McMann along side of him. Wennberg - Just not worth his $, nor do I think he's a clear upgrade on Domi. Evans - Young is good, but again is really better than Kampf/Domi. Backlund - Last year he'd be my number 1 guy, but a big step back this year along with him aging might not be a good 2-year grab.


Step 2: Third Pairing Stability (RHD ONLY):
What I'm willing to package: 1-2 of of the following: Picks round 3-7, C-Tier Prospects (Tverberg, Kokkonen, Holinka, Villeneuve, Moldenhauer), Marshall Rifai, Conor Timmins

1-Year Rentals:

1. David Savard
2. Cody Ceci
3. Jeff Petry

2-Year Rentals:

1. Nick Jensen
2. Radko Gudas
3. Luke Schenn

Green -
David Savard: For a 1 year rental, you're getting a good defensive option who can be a big add on the PK, who plays smart simple hockey. He's essentially a secondary Tanev.
Radko Gudas: I know he's a very polarizing choice on this board. But at the end of the day, a guy with size, physicality, winning pedigree, seems almost like a no-brainer if he's willing to come here.
Conor Clifton: Physical, shot blocking defender who can skate well. While dimunitive in size, he plays twice his size. He's also only 29 - and has proven to be a mobile two-way d at lower levels.

Yellow -
Nick Jensen - I thinks he's talented, I just would be afraid of the cost. I also, don't think stylistically he's the greatest fit, as he's more of PMD with a little lack of physicality.
Cody Ceci - I think this is a low-risk, medium reward move. In a bottom pair role, he'd be reliable. He's sizeable, and has a surprisingly good shot. He was quite good in Pittsburgh, and looked better the less minute he played in Edmonton.

Red -
Luke Schenn - He's nowhere near the level he was, when he was here two years ago. Also that second year scares me.
Erik Gudbranson - Just too expensive from a dollar perspective. He also hasn't been healthy similar to Hakanpaa. He also gives me Roman Polak vibes with the hot potato puck movements.
Jeff Petry - I wouldn't be mad, but wouldn't really love it. A little too old at this point.
Jan Rutta - Stylistically a fit, but I'm unsure if he's a big upgrade on what we currently have.

Nice breakdown. But when I saw Ceci's name I puked in my mouth a little and then i puked in my mouth a lot.

We could realistically make an addition at the TDL and be fine, like if you somehow did Minten, Rielly + 3rd for Miller

Surely our FLA 2nd 2025 + something else that Dubas is familiar with like Timmins, Robertson, Niemela, Hirvonen, Moldenhauer etc etc (even if it takes 2) would land Marcus Pettersson.

Wanted him for years, can't see why he'd be available though.

I forget the source this week but previously SEA had resisted moving a roster defenseman at previous TDL but this year they might be more open to it.

Larsson just extended and Montour just signed in the off-season there

Next 2 up after that? Dunn or Oleksiak, I have to imagine they'd prefer to cash out on Oleksiak.
