Can Grebenkin play LW? I know there’s a Russian tendency to play on your off wing but the lineup could look great if he could.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
McMann - Tavares - Marner
Grebenkin - Minten/3C trade - Nylander
Lorentz - Kampf - XXXX

Either use assets to upgrade on Domi or Minten but otherwise each line in the top 9 could have size, playmaking, scoring , defensively responsibility and an elite level talent.
Doesn’t matter cause Willy can play left wing

I think Treliving needs to start creating some cap space here. While it won't be easy, he needs to move on from Reaves, Kampf, Jarnkrok and Robertson. All 4 players have been replaced internally and don't bring anything to this team. Robertson might be the only one with value but if you need to add future picks to move them, then do so. If not, waivers they go.

Not sure Minten can handle a full season yet, but he impressed last night. Especially late in the game on the 2-1 where he pressured from behind. Looked to have good wheels and may have been the reason that 2-1 went no where.

Also, besides the physical play I though Grebenkin played well in his own zone, and possibly prevented a goal against with his dive stick check that knocked the puck away from the half open net.

My concern is the deployment of Domi. Has Domi been playing injured from the start of the season?

I like what you've posted for lines. I'm still going after Mathieu Olivier for that spot on the 4th line. Laughton if Minten isn't a solution. Allegedly Grebenkin can play either wing spot. He shoots Left... Nylander Right, so it should work.

Let's hope Domi's lack of production is just a slow start and injury related. I like what The Podium suggested for lines, if we think he will get back to his second half last year.

Minten we will just have to see.....

What do we think we need cap space for though? Jarnkrok we can't really move while he's out, and he isn't taking cap space anyway. Kampf... why are we in a rush to move him out? Robertson and Reaves, sure....

Ideally, we get 3rd line center who has already another year on his contract to allow Minten to continue to develop his game. My target would be Scott Laughton.

As for moving on from Kampf, last night's game was a perfect example on why we don't need a 2.4 million dollar 4th line center. Holmberg, Dewar, and Lorentz are all capable of playing center, all 3 also can PK.

Here's your 4th. line.
Lorentz-Dewar-Holmberg: ~$3mm.

I've advocated for Laughton as well. The question that now presents us... is Minten actually ready, or does he need to develop more? If not, I'm all in with you on Laughton.

Holmberg was ok last night in many respects. Good defensively, good at draws... terrible at doing much with the puck other than skating into the Dzone and giving it away. Nothing happening for him offensively, though credit where credit is due, he did create the opportunity for the EN goal.

Dewar is crap at faceoffs. He had some good energy last night, but I'm not sure he's the answer for anything. Lorentz I like as a winger.

Yes, Kampf is expensive at $2.4, but so far this year he has been a better hockey player than Holmberg.... the question being, what do we need that cap space for? It's not stopping us from getting Laughton, or Olivier, or both.... We have the cap space to acquire both of them, if we send out Reaves and Robertson, and Holmberg, Minten, Grebs go to the minors. That's with a 22 man roster.

However, if Minten sticks... I don't mind moving Kampf out, and Laughton in... having Laughton as a $3mil 4C... because that makes for a very strong lineup.

Here's your 4th. line.
Lorentz-Dewar-Holmberg: ~$3mm.
Holmberg isn't the physicality I want out of that spot. Replace him with Mathieu Olivier.

Brad knows what he's doing.

How many times this season has the fanbase shat themselves about the impending cap catastrophe? And yet here we are. 7 forwards down and still chugging along.

We're not dealing with Kyle Dubas here.

I'm not shatting on anyone but to act like our cap isn't an issue, well then you must not be familiar with how the cap works. The only reason we've been able to juggle all these moves is because you currently have 3 players on the LTIR. Once these players are healthy, we're going to be in some serious cap crunch and have to make moves. So why wait until then when teams know you're desperate, as opposed to getting ahead of it and making the moves now if you can.

Probably because they already have a deal or two in place if they need to make space.

Laughton and Olivier would be quite the haul. As it stands today those feel like the ideal acquisitions. The bright side of losing half our forwards is Tre should be in a better spot to shape the team after all the trials end.

Understanding that our Salary Cap guy is Brandon Pridham, and has been on the job since 2014.
GM manages the cap, Pridham runs scenario analysis.

I actually think the Leafs have managed the cap extremely well this year. I believe their plan is to use IR, the Marlies, waivers, conditioning stints, and trades to keep their NHL depth which is a strength of this team.

They've done a good job but there's a balance. They could have gotten more for Robo if they pitched him in the off season, which maybe they should have seen coming.

It would be easier to maneuver now than when they get jammed up, but at the same time we are in a good spot to test our in house options and get a more informed idea of what we need.

Gotta think if a target 3C is on the move they would get involved.

I think I’m moving into the wait and see side regarding a 3C. We’re strong on the wing, so it might be a good time to see what Minten can do with an extended look.

When healthy,

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Pacioretty - Tavares - Marner
McMann - Minten - Nylander
Lorentz - Kampf - Holmberg
Reaves

Grebenkin first call up when injuries take place. Trade Robertson.

Maybe they could have gotten "more", could they have gotten much more? Enough?

Depth and competition ar hard to quantify sometimes. Maybe having guys like Robertson and Holmberg up here and not waiver exempt keeps guys like Steeves, Grebenkin and even Minten working hard and knowing they have the b at someone out?

I wonder where Minten fits in as 3C?

Not sure, that's part of the balance but significant enough I would think.

Mintens ceiling was projected at 3C not that long ago. I'd be suprised if he was our playoff 3C but looks like we get to test him out. Good start so far!
