Good point on that. If that's the replacement, then I'd be interested in that. The problem is that they like how reliable Kampf is on the PK. I haven't seen enough Penguins games lately to see how much of a decrease it would be to throw Acciari on the PK.

The Veleno trade would be hopeful that he's better than a 30 point player that he's showed. I think the talent is there, but I just don't want to give up a lot of assets for him.
Veleno has always been that potential never fulfilled guy. I suppose the hope would be that a change of scenery would turn his game around some... but he doesn't PK, has two assists and no goals this year... and his cap hit is $2.275 mil. I don't see it personally.

Funny that he had Special player status in the CHL, and started Junior at 15.

Kampf is on LTIR right now. It doesn't feel super serious since he was questionable to play Sunday but it does open up about 2.5M ish of cap space for the next month or so now that he moved to LTIR.

I wonder if the Leafs make a move and push their cap problem further down the line?

I don't think we are far off from Matthews being on LTIR. 10 games and 24 days? He's missed six games..... I don't think cap space is going to be an issue for some time now.

I guess this depends on what type of C they want... is it a Laughton, or a Granlund type player?

If we don't get one of Minten, or Holmberg showing well tonight, and Matthews and Domi are showing signs of being out for very long, then our hand might be forced.

Matthews appears to be on track to be back next week against Florida, maybe another game after. I don't think he'll be on LTIR but if he doesn't get better... then maybe?

Yeah I think if the Leafs depth doesn't come through right away, they may not have a choice to go out and grab someone.

I wonder if they do an emergency call-up of Cowan? It's been done before.

Yeah, I'd be willing to take a chance on him if they can make the money work out.

With the Leafs not getting a ton of production from the bottom 6, the minimum expectation is that it would be an equivalent move at worst. The best case scenario would be that you find some untapped scoring from him at almost 25 years old.

Bjugstad is considered high end?

I think in terms of being able to play higher in the lineup, not necessarily the cost to acquire.

Nick Bjugstad, Utah HC

Pros: At 6-foot-6, he’s one of the biggest pivots in the league, and he’s managed to string together multiple healthy seasons after a lot of injury issues earlier in his career. Bjugstad had one of the best offensive seasons of his career last year in Arizona, with 22 goals, 45 points and a career-high 17:27 in ice time per game. Another player who would fit Berube’s style well given his presence in front of the net. Plus at $2.1 million on an expiring deal, he’s a steal.

Cons: There aren’t many. He’s not particularly effective on the PK and isn’t a prototypical shutdown centre, but down the lineup, he would help Toronto a lot.

Fit: Assuming Utah falls out of the playoff race and the acquisition cost is reasonable, Bjugstad makes a lot of sense as a fit.

Naz Kadri (1.5M retained - 5.5M per for 5 years) for Calle Jarnkrok + Pontus Holmberg + Topi Niemela + Florida 2025 2nd

Ryan O'Rielly (4.5M for 3 years) for David Kampf + Nicholas Robertson + (Top-5 protected 2026 1st round pick)

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Kadri - Tavares - Nylander
Domi - ROR - Pacioretty
Lorentz - Dewar - McMann
ex. Reaves

Not sure if their interest in Robertson makes sense considering his season and their needs. I think that was a couple years ago when they were not where they are now. They seem pretty set on the wings for awhile. But if he's in the same boat as Liljegren and losing his spot to other players, it's possible they take a couple picks just to let him go to a team that can use him.

If Frost can’t make the far inferior team like Flyers, what makes us so sure that he will be able to carve out a role here. Robertson still has potential to break out because of his shot. I just feel he is a guy who keep for as long as you can and hope he can find a way to break out!

Not sure what fans clamouring for has to do with Treliving?

Fans would be irrelevant.

Frost makes the same amount as Jarnkrok. So if they planned on him being on the team before his injury, seems like Frost would fit as well. No idea of the value though so it's not as easy as just making it happen.

Smallish player who had good speed, who has slowed down, and isn't very effective anymore. He was a good player, but that ship has sailed.

Like plekanec in 2018 but for the time he been here, he did good thing fome playoff time. We don't need gourde to carry anything

I thing is sure with gourde you get a guy who will be at 100% every shift and able to play against anybody with higher offensive than guy like kuraly or acciari or whatever

Didn’t that have to do with salary retention?
Calgary didn't want to retain ( certainly an owner decision) that's why they had less than what they could

Maybe part of it, but the Leafs have also been quite liberal at using third teams to facilitate retention in the past

Mirtle and others in n the media have also talked about Tre and Flames ownership parting on bad terms.

I'll be genuinely surprised if we see a Leafs Flames trade in the next couple seasons that doesn't disproportionately favor the Flames (so likely not going to happen imo)
