I don't think Timmins has been on the ice for a goal against ES or PK for like 6 games now...so he's winning his minutes, likely difficult to do better for the $$.
He was on the ice for the first goal last night.

Getting a legit 3C is probably the biggest need at the moment. Get another guy to help anchor one of the bottom six lines.

Robertson + a pick and find the best they can
Yup a 3c is the need.

Hopefully Minten lights it up in the AHL. Be huge to bring in a guy like that later on in the season if he can do well.

It's more or less what I expect to happen in the next 3 months. Who, what and when is tough to figure out. But basically packaging some players/prospects with a pick or two for a center. Someone to shift Domi back to RW and create a line with McMann probably.

A buy low option would be Morgan Frost, but I'm not sure he's the kind of center they would want or if the Flyers are even selling. Jake Evans would be another option but trading with MTL is always weird.

It doesn’t accomplish anything for this season. I would never make that statement. It was a long-term proposal.

I completely agree he’s a very effective player and his contract increases his value. I also don’t think he’s the difference between the Leafs winning a playoff round and not, especially when he’s historically unreliable with injuries.
Your trade is a trade a Team like Tampa, Vegas, Flordia, Avs, Blues, etc would make.

The leafs under MLSE are the one of the most risk averse, stuck in their ways ownership group in the league

If avs wanted woll (would make sense as he has past strong stretches and ona good deal next year) ritchie is a great target

This type of move utilizies an internal strength (two potential playoff starting goalies) to acquire a postion of weakness that can be filled as soon as next year at 2C

Leafs would never do this deal unfortunately. Too afraid to potentially take a step back/look bad again if Woll blossoms and gets the Avs another cup (kadri trade previously)

Dvorak has made his way to 4C in Montreal but the cap hit is difficult.

When is the last time these top teams made a trade in season to weaken their roster for a prospect? The answer is rarely ever and I don't even have to check. The Blues are rebuilding so I'm sure they made plenty of those moves in the last few years.

I don't disagree that this team has been very trade shy with moving core players and trade shy in general since Treliving has taken over, but that doesn't mean they should do questionable roster decisions either when they are trying to win.

This team has had goaltender woes for a long time. They've managed despite that but it's always been highly inconsistent with questionable depth. You always go through a bunch of goaltenders in a season due to injuries. And to put Callum Ritchie as a legit #2 center as early as next season while not impossible is really stretching it.

Would you bring back Bunting? Buy low candidate

Robertson + a pick for Bunting w/ retention

Everybody wants that center, but depth scoring would be pretty good and Bunting has put up decent numbers, especially on the first line. It also allows for Knies to be utilized with Tavares/Nylander which they've played well with before.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Knies - Tavares- Nylander

Perhaps more of a plan B(unting) if the Leafs strike out on a center again this year

Trading Woll to fill a future need isnt a questionable decision imo. It is building for next year and onwards while giving the reigns to Stolarz who has a cheap deal and can play 50-55 starts. Also get a backup in goergiev you bank on to rebound under the leafs defensivw system.

Getting a 2C is almost impossible for us unless we draft at this point. We can sign and draft 1B goalie (have a few in the system, and goalies are often available if you are willing to take a bet and have good internal goaltending coaches and scouts)

While I can't think of an exact trade like Woll + Robertson for Ritchie + Goergiev a few Trades where teams dealt a good player for future oriented results would be:

Blues: 2016-2017 TDL --> sell Kevin Shattinkirk as a pending rental who many fans wanted to extend as Blues were in a playoff spot and had made WCF in 2016. They got sanford who played 8 games in 2019 cup and had 4 pts and bigger piece in a 1st which they used at the 2017 draft to acquire Brayden Schenn an elite 2C foe them for half a decade

Panthers: 2022 summer --> Huberdeau off a hart levek year + Weegar (#2/3D) +1st for Matt Tkachuk. Changed the strategy and playstyle within the org, with the trade initially being considered a longer term move with Panthers sacrificing win now assets to get Tkachuk who could fit in better long term for the Panthers to contend. Got 2 finals and a cup out of it so far and remain a top 2/3 contender for this season

VGK: Dumped Fleury in 2021 summer, bwing aggresive and flexible on who their starting goalie will be to get them a cup

WSH --> 2011 summer. Traded Varlamov to the Avs for an unprotected 1st rounder. Caps lost in R1 in 2011 playoffs and Varlamov was one of their 2 very good goalies. They used the position of strength and sold him going with Holtby. They did butcher the deal trading 12th OA in 2012 (Filip Forsberg) for Erat, but this was a similar type move to dealing Woll for Ritchie

The Blues trade was the only one that fits with a big caveat that he was a pending UFA, whereas Woll isn't. The other moves were all made in the summer with a full off-season to make necessary adjustments. So as I said, basically never happens. None of them traded a good player/goaltender locked up for a prospect IN SEASON for no reason other than to grab a prospect minimum a year away from any sort of impact, likely more than a year. Leafs don't have cap space issues anymore and certainly don't have the luxury of dumping a good goaltender.

Next off-season Leafs could very well look to trade Woll, or Stolarz, for a prospect/picks and then fill out their depth accordingly via free agency or other avenues. There's a time to make a trade for the future, right now though the goal is probably trying to win hockey games.

for
Nichushkin
?
Can't rely on a coke addict.

Kadri cost us by getting suspended.

Nichushkin has been suspended back to back playoffs for off ice troubles. Way too risky and unreliable

Well i hope we at least trade 1 of Woll or Stolarz in the summer.

No reason keeping 2 good goalies if you can address a weakness positional need and get an NHL ready player soon.

Woll if he is good in the reg season ajd playoffs then deal Stolarz

If its other way around deal Woll.

For what Stolarz is delivering for $2.5M per I don't think it would not be a smart/safe move to deal him. Woll has shown himself to be fragile and is some distance away from be reliable enough for the contract he got. The only way he should be moved is if Woll goes injury free and one of the AHL guys forces his way in which I think it would require a timely injuriy to give them a shot. Based on Stolarz' 116 NHL games and injury history I am more attached to him than Woll. I still feel Woll has the higher upside but that isn't enough. Adin Hill has more Stanley Cup Rings than Carey Price. You don't need a superstar, as much as you need a durable guy.

Didn’t Tampa just trade Sergachev for Geekie?

Didn’t they acquire Sergachev when he was still in the OHL for 50 point Drouin?

But easy to remove from Cap.
Isnt Nichkushkin on Avs cap still?

Not sure how his suspension works tbh.

If he gets suspended and the contract can be waived/voided outright it would be a risk worth considering.

Idk though, domi does love being a leaf and took a discount to stay. Hoping he can up his production to 45-50 pts and be same in the playoffs. I like domi the player and his ability to muck it up every now and then.

Wish we could identify a Nichkushkin type candidate or two and acquire for cheap instead of the risk of trading for him with his 6.25M AAV, off ice addictions and aging body.

I think because he is in step 3 of the program, if he were to commit an offense again, it escalates to being able to terminate his contract.

Doubt we'd trade Domi so soon after signing him though

This.

The very simple reality is that teams who believe they should be contenders don't start making moves that objectively make their team worse today, 12 games into the season.

They may have to make moves (a la Liljegren) to deal with cap issues. They may try to do a "hockey trade" and tinker if they don't like their mix, and that trade may go down poorly, but the whole concept of the Leafs trading Woll at this point is quite farfetched,

In my opinion, this would be a really solid addition. At $2.1m the cap should work pretty easily.

Put him on a line with Nylander and McMann -- a lot more unpredictable, and a lot more reliable defensively.

Put Domi on a line with Knies and Matthews.

Put Marner on a line with Pacioretty & Tavares.

At that point, who gives a damn what your 4th line is, that's an absolute matchup nightmare come playoff time.

Your lines are the exact lines I want.

Granlund or Frost would be a nice add.
