Seravelli said Leafs, Jets and Avs could be the top 3 teams after him if he comes back. Imo I'd say Jets are the favourite being a good team and being his hometown team.

I wonder if he would want to skate with our coaches. Many players come here after injuries. Not really the jets for rehab. Not sure their facilities.

Do his family still live there?

We gotta hold onto our 1st round picks. We don’t have alot of great prospects. Unless it’s for a big impact player for a positional need I’d start holding onto them.
If you're planning for the post core-4 era I won't throw shade at that but if it's me those picks are already gone.

In a perfect world I think the strategy is to hold all first picks and dump the rest through a structured contender window but we got screwed seven ways from Sunday with Dubie so we're in high risk fight mode now with a looming restart.

Etobicoke, on
Keep in mind, it's very rare that a late 20's draft pick, is a "great prospect" anyway.

Sometimes you hit the lottery or get someone good there though.

Kuznetsov 26
Pastrnak 25
Thompson 26
Oettinger 26
McMichael 25

I know it’s unlikely and we haven’t really hit much luck in this spot in a long time but you’re gonna strike gold eventually.

I would assume not cheap. Buffalo just traded a recent top 10 pick to get him.

Didn't the Sabres just trade Savoie for McLeod? It seems unlikely they would move on from him so soon and he's progressing well for them. That said, I think he's the type of 3c I want and it's a nice idea if he's available.
Yes, Savoie for McLeod.

After some thought, I think a deal would be predicated on: 1) Is Matthews' injury going to continue to be a 'thing' through the playoffs, or can it heal, and 2) Are Tre and Berube willing to piece together 3 lines for the core 4...and 3) Could they potentially get Toews, who's interest in returning I just read about here.

We've only got 4 guaranteed years of Matthews. I don't think I'd roll the dice on a costly deal if he is not going to be able to produce at his healthy rate. I'd save the ammo until next year's TDL hoping AM would be who he is when healthy. Which ties together with point 2, when healthy I think Matthews carries a line, opening up the 3 line opportunity. Matthews can score with Domi, who is a better passer/assist guy than scorer. Matthews defensively, helps cover for Domi's defensive liabilities. And McLeod would do the same for Willy if the team was committed to that 3 line idea. But if they're not committed to it... . As to Toews, who knows.

As to what it would take?

Kamph, Cowan and a pick (not a 1st or 2nd) for Ryan McLeod?

The third line is rolling, hard to see a big need at 3c at the moment, though it’s basically three LWs.

Is there a younger RD out there somewhere whos available and who could slide next to Mo.

Murphy is a nice name and a fine potential add, but I’m thinking more in the mid 20’s zone?

Strome isn’t a bad option, I always thought he’d settle better on the wing though given his face off ability is pretty weak and he’s also not the fastest skater out there.

We really missed the boat on his brother when Chicago didn’t qualify him.

Knies Matthews Domi
McMann Strome Nylander
Pacioretty Tavares Marner
Lorentz Kampf Dewar

That's a very good looking group
I've warmed up a little bit with Strome too. And considering Matthews is a bit of a write off this season, I think it's apparent we need a 3C who can play up in the lineup when needed.

My TDL wish list remains the same as it did back in September: 3C and a top 4D to push another top 4 to the third pair. Not sure we have the assets to do both though.

McMann-Strome-Nylander would be an elite line.

Even more skill player, it is really what leafs actually need to have playoff succes?!?!?!

Leafs need player who will bring emotion, energy to the game and would be able to step up when it's really matter...

Watch team like Vegas, Colorado, Tampa added when they won it.

barbashev
lehkonen/Manson
Coleman/Goodrow/Savard

Guy who will come to the ice when thing goes wrong, bring back some energy and momemtum to the team... That's what leafs need, even more skill will not make leafs a better team come playoff.

15 december game vs buffalo is perfect exemple of what i saying. Leafs started the game flat and rapidly down 2-0... What's happened? 3rd line player (especially Domi) step up, start to work harder, score a goal and bring back some momemtum. Buffalo took for an other time a 2 goal lead but who step up pretty fast by reducing it to 1 goal 2 minute later? The same player... Domi did an amaizing job with his work and robertson finished it.

That's what i want at TDL. Player who's able to just start working harder and make thing happen when thing goes wrong, not an other player like Strome who will follow the parade like rest 9f the team.

You do not want Ryan Strome.

He was carried by Panarin.

He takes dumb penalties and bad defensively.

Servalli linked us to Toews. Give him a shot on a PTO.
In all politeness we’re in our cup window now…. It would extremely stupid to waste a roster spot on a try out for Toews. We gotta take advantage while pot is hot. Gotta go out and get difference makers. I understand people love draft picks. But I’d go all in this year and get a big piece. We got the D, the goalie depth. Just need another addition at C.

I’m in the camp you gotta trade it for a massive upgrade. I want a cup, I’m tired of talking about 3rd line depth pieces. We got the goaltending, the D, go out and get a star player and move everybody down a slot. Let’s go for it. Toews ain’t going to go shit here. Dude hasn’t played in 2 years and just got back from India

I think there is very little chance the Leafs have any interest in Toews.

Toews was the captain for my 2nd favorite team and was a hell of a player.

Now that I have gotten that out of the way...if he was serious about playing this year he should be playing in the Spenglar to show what he has in the tank at this point.

Generally these older comebacks don't work out. I remember Mike Richards with the Caps and Mike Fisher with Nashville coming back after basically a year off and they didn't do much of anything. I don't think Toews will offer anything to anyone at this point.

I still think its gonna be Scott Laughton. Gourde will be tougher from a financial perspective.

However, if it's a trade with Seattle, I can see Treliving trying to get a package that includes Brandon Tanev, too.

Realistically I think we only need one forward, preferably somebody who can play 3C and top 9LW just I case we decide to keep the Domi line together (they are actually doing the job offensively right now)

I also wouldn't mind getting a puck moving PP QB RD either
Makes me wonder why we brought in a broken Hakanpaa instead of a guy like Justin Schultz
I know we like size but come on

I'd rather pay a little more and see if they can land a 2nd. line center with term.

Two reasons:
  1. Matthews on again off again health issues dating back to last year's playoffs.
  2. Leverage on the Tavares re-sign.

If all they can muster is a 3rd. line center I'm not sure I'd worry about term so much. In the summer there will likely be better options for that position, maybe even Minten?
