I will agree to disagree. Having an offensively capable defense can only help the top heavy forwards with creating offense more efficiently. The elite forwards in Colorado, Edmonton, Tampa all benefit from having better puck movers and offensive D.
To be fair, both Hedman in his prime and Makar are the cream of the crop of d-man. Everything they do from skating/passing/vision makes it's easier for Tampa and Colorado forwards. They also can play in their own end pretty well.

It's super hard to find a d-man that can move the puck / score without having a negative impact in their own end. They kind of cancel each other out. I thought Chychrun would have been an ideal fit, Sanhiem would have been a good option as well on the blue line. Our D-Core might not be the sexiest, but it does it #1 job pretty well which is solid defense play in it's own end.

There's no such thing as a perfect team, in the cap era unless you abuse the LTIR situation like Vegas/Tampa did. If we are arguing what's more important at this stage for the Leafs, I think that 3C hole over a puck moving d-man, I thought the best we looked in the playoffs is when we had a solid 3rd line with ROR on it.

I'd love to replace Rielly with Dobson. Wishful thinking.

Agreed unfortunately we are at the mercy of this core. In the playoffs we have to hope:

1. JT has his legs and hands
2. Nylander is interested
3. Matthews' back is 90+%
4. Playoff Rielly makes an appearance
5. Mitch is not afraid of his shadow
The real #1 is hoping Stolarz or Woll are on their game, It's quite refreshing not to have to worry about goaltending. From Playoff Freddy to Campbell to Murray to Samsonov.

The core is running out of excuses now that Tre solidified the D and G. If Rielly can return to the guy who dominated Tampa two years ago, they will be set. The Matthews injury worries me.

Team is deep enough without him short term IMO. We need a 3C. I like the idea of Toews at 750K on a 1/year w/ bonuses. Failing that, Jake Evans is a good target but won't be cheap.

I have serious doubts that a 36 year old and turns 37 in April and whose been out of the league for almost two years now is going to be able to come back and be the player we need at the 3C hole.

Absolutely no risk in a 20 game stint with a free contract we can bury for effectively 0 cap hit if needed. Its just upside.

Reading this article about Toews' recovery process in India. Knew that I needed him on this team as soon as I read the part about his daily practice of getting into the downward dog position each morning and spreading his ass cheeks so that he can get direct sunlight into his shit hole. This guy is a lunatic.

Imagine getting this guy an amulet? Imagine the powers that could be harnassed?

I'm all in on Toews 3C this year. Sue me.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Pacioretty - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Toews - Domi
Lorentz - Kampf - Dewar

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - X
OEL - Myers

Not that it's a surprise but the Leafs have talked to or are interested in Toews according to Seravalli. Jets and Avs are also other teams interested.

He also said that the big question is if he will be ready this season or is it a next season commitment.

I think the easiest way to find out is to sign him to an AHL contract, see how he does there and evaluate.

It's a big time long shot though and the Leafs likely wouldn't bet on an all-star player anyway.

Sign Jonathan Toews to a Pacioretty type of deal and trade for Patrick Kane at the deadline just for those days when you just don't want to see Dewar and Holmberg...

I'm curious about how a Toews contract would look. The NHL minimum contract is $775k. Can we sign someone for that amount, pro-rated by the number of days left in a season? Like $250k, if that's how the math shakes out? Or if it's 2/3rds into the season, are we held to a $775k contract, meaning the prorated contract is really a $2.325 mil cap hit... of course pro-rated back to an actual of $775k addition for the balance of the season.

To Toronto-
Jt Miller

To Vancouver-
Nick Robertson
Easton Cowan
David Kampf
2026 1st Round Pick

Correct!

The only way to get Miller is:
LTIR Matthews
Or
Morgan Rielly waives his NMC.
We don’t have the assets to spend Matthews LTIR money. Do people on these boards realize out of all the contenders we have the worst assets ? Do people ever think about that or just wanna keep talking about using his LTIR money?

Whether or not you want to pay it.
We have the assets.

Correct, we are not deep and pipeline is very dry.
