I'm curious about how a Toews contract would look. The NHL minimum contract is $775k. Can we sign someone for that amount, pro-rated by the number of days left in a season? Like $250k, if that's how the math shakes out? Or if it's 2/3rds into the season, are we held to a $775k contract, meaning the prorated contract is really a $2.325 mil cap hit... of course pro-rated back to an actual of $775k addition for the balance of the season.
It would be prorated but as we are in LTIR and not accruing cap space it doesn’t really matter.
We would need to use $775k in cap space which we do have. The roster spot is the bigger issue. We would have to waive or trade someone and don’t have anyone that doesn’t require waivers.

Jt Miller

To Vancouver-
Nick Robertson
Easton Cowan
David Kampf
2026 1st Round Pick
Hard pass. JT Miller seems like a pretty crappy teammate. Pettersson isn’t the first teammate he hasn’t gotten along with. Horvat and Schenn had issues with him too.
Add to that he has issues with consistency in his play.

Furthermore to bring him in at that cap hit you have to LTIR Matthews for the year which he has shown no interest in doing. And to fit him next season you are going to have to make more hard decisions.

Not worth all the trouble.

In the off-season if this team still struggles to win a playoff round or two, I'd definitely be very inclined to do a big time shake up like that. But yeah for now, I don't understand why anyone would want to risk it all for JT Miller.

Agreed. I’m open to shaking up the core. Especially if they come up short in the playoffs again.
A soon to be 32 year old JT Miller with all kinds of red flags just seems like a poor guy to bet on.

Your Worst Nightmare
Ryan Reaves + Nick Robertson + COL 3rd

for

Mathieu Olivier

Reaves replaces the role Olivier plays for the Blue Jackets and they take a chance on Robertson becoming a useful middle-6 player along with a high pick. Olivier is a rental and this is his first season of decent production.

Rielly needs to go asap. It's pretty sad he's the highest paid defensemen we have and at this point probably our worst defensemen.

I think Rielly is maybe a teeny bit overpaid.

Today's better defensemen can make more: CapWages - NHL Salary Cap Data

To me it looks like the biggest issue is his footspeed, as he's never been great defensively.

Leadership is fine, but it shouldn't be confused with production/efficiency.

Leafs need a 1st. pairing defender and another 2nd. line center.

The Naki
Is it just me or has that 3rd line of McMann Domi and Robertson looked pretty good since it's been together?

I haven't looked at there advanced stats but if they can continue this level of play should we be breaking that line up?

Do we need a 3C or a guy who can play 3C/LW in the top 6 just in case we want to keep our best attacking line currently together?

I like the guy, but it's already public knowledge that Columbus really likes him, and Dreger has reported they are in extension talks. The dollars though are outrageous, if you believe this rumour.

Yes, and you are sending Kreider, who is not a C, to Boston, while you are sending Lindholm to Vancouver.
Yeah, Bruins are getting the short-end there, but of course Lindholm was a free asset anyway.

Only team really winning in that 3-way deal would be Rangers.

I think Kreider could be had for next to nothing ... which would be okay with me for the Bruins.
