Is there a disconnect in this conversation.

Sounds like some are equating points for a defensemen as the only outcome with regards to being good at transition.

Transitioning the puck doesn't mean the defenseman doing the transition gets the points. A first pass (transition) from the defender could result in a goal where the defender gets nothing beside satisfaction for doing his job.

Anyone have stats showing on average how many passes per goal? How many passes from the d-zone result in a goal?

Kaberle I really didn't see as a puck transporter, but a defender who was very good at puck transitioning.

Rielly was more a puck transporter, who relied on his wheels more than his intangibles.

Rielly was one of the best from his draft, which maybe had 2 homeruns and several triples. Nothing near franchise level players.

Kaberle was an elite puck transporter. The way he would exit a zone and carry the puck through center ice cool and calm. Was a thing of beauty. A little different than Rielly's awkward 2 speed transition game: the more effective tunnel vision dash up the ice and the alternative off speed change up where any chaos might be unleashed.

Kaberle could skate, but my own memories is how he could capture the puck and within a moment the puck was heading up ice.

Perhaps it was vision, and I'm not sure they have a defender playing in the NHL that has that today.

We really miss that intelligent, skating QB type from the back end like Kaberle. Rielly is closer to a Bryan Berard who was more about his athleticism and skating.

Leafs haven't done a great job drafting, developing and keeping defenders.

I think they're just stuck being weak in this position for the next several years.

Between GM and Coach, how many really have any faith in this team in this area?

Your being generous, we ******* suck at drafting and developing defenseman

We're going to have to rely on UFA, which isn't ideal

They have a philosophy, they value size and defensive ability imo

We will see if they were right

His defense wasn’t great but he’d still get PK time because he was an automatic zone exit pressure valve.

Kaberle could also defend capably, something Mo has never learned……..

Mo is definitely better than anyone drafted before him which isn’t saying much as he is the only one from the top 5 still in the league.

Yeah the other guy from that draft is Vasi but that also would have been a massive stretch.
At the time I wanted the leafs to trade down and try to get both of Forsberg and Grigorenko.
I don’t know if that would have been possible and half of that would have been a big miss. Absolutely no complaints about how it ended up working out for us.

How good is Connor Murphy?
Seems like he could be a good fit from a RHD, good size, potential defensive partner for Rielly standpoint.
What would it cost to acquire? He has one more year after this season at 4.4m

Murphy would be a great addition to our blueline. I wonder if we could get some kind of package of Murphy (50% retained) + Dach for 2026 1st Rounder + Robertson + something else.

Then I would look at acquiring Dvorak from Montreal, also 50% retained. Shouldn’t cost too much. Or Gourde depending on the cost.

Been onboard trading for Murphy for years.

Desperately wanted him in that trade more than McCabe at the time (happily eating crow on McCabe literally every day since).

Murphy would be a terrific partner for Rielly and will shore up your RHD. Also lets us get the best version of OEL byputting him back on LHD and letting him dominate 3rd and 4th lines.

He is the main RHD trade I am hoping to see ASAP. Makes too much sense and the cost should not be prohibitive to get him.
