If the guys defending aren't efficient moving the puck or joining the play you end up struggling to create offense, you still need goals to win games

It's been an issue the last few playoffs and this season so it's a problem
Stabilize the right side

They're a difference by moving the puck and join the play to create offence...

Exemple for me tanev/savard move the puck pretty well but he don't join the play or create a lot of offence... But in a counter part savard could exemple gave more freedom to a rielly or oel to create thing offensively

Hakanpaa's dead salary plus Reaves or Benoit for Luke Schenn. Maybe he'll stabilize the Rielly pairing so we can keep Tanev with McCabe. Rafai replaces Benoit on the bottom pair with OEL.

We are actually in good shape in the length defender department right now. I have no problem with upgrading on Timmins - the weak link - and completing a big tough, mean blueline that resembles 2021 Montreal in some degree to play a park the bus and rope a dope hockey... But this might also be the time to get a Sam Girard type who can be a more dynamic puck mover and QB type player who can reconnect the transition game better. We have a lot of guys who can protect a player like that.
I'm leaning towards the park-bus-rope-dope. We have the recent history both internal and external that it works and it feels more reliable to finally grind through some rounds.

Opening up the ice with a Girard type for speed and action packed games could really pop, but feels more risky with faceplant potential.

Girard in particular I recall getting the Avs bounced from the playoffs. Then again, he was there for the cup win..

Does the current management focus on length above all else?

If you are going to sign some iffy players (health wise) why not try for something that might fill a need?

Basically unless Mo, OEL or Timmins are doing something we're not creating offense on the backend

Timmins is inconsistent and could be a healthy scratch, OEL only has 12 points and Mo looks brutal recently

Looking at our past playoff performance and our lack of scoring I still think we need more offense back there

They like size, I don't think that's particularly debatable either

I'd prefer them to concentrate on healthy players, Hakanpaa is a #5-#6 I'm sure they could have found a different one going cheap

My new years wish for the playoffs.
- Kampf out (cap reasons) too vanilla, maybe reunite him with Keefe in jersey
- Replace him with Sundqvist from the Blues, he can be the 4C for a million less than Kampf, plays a heavy game and excelled under Berube in the cup run.
- bring another middle 6 player who plays fast and heavy - Laughton, Kadri, Gourde, surprise me
- one more D, I think can either be right or left.
- health for Matthews and the goalies

We need some offense. Even Florida had Montour.

Good list. I agree with the health part of course.

What about Kampf and Robertson for Gourde and Tanev? I know the value skews in our favour but Seattle gives up two UFAs for guys under control beyond this season. Time to sell while Robertson is hot?

What would it take to get Schenn out of Nashville? Niemela? Steeves?

Nylander Matthews Marner
Knies Tavares Domi
Pacioretty Gourde McMann
Tanev Dewar Lorentz

McCabe Tanev
Reilly Schenn
OEL Timmins
Benoit Myers
Hakanpaa

1- You can't compare previous playoff scoring of last 5 years when leafs played with s complete opposite system and we

2- You need to go with what available on the market and right now, probably the best option right now is to get a solid partner to rielly to give him more freedom than playing with Myers or a OEL who's not as good as RD. That's exactly what savard is

Manson better shut down d man

Manson is more physical but hr's not a better shutdown D.

I don't think people understand just how important transition and creating offense from the dmen is.

We need a stud out there and unfortunately Rielly isn't that ofd anymore.

He's just slightly above average at all facets of defense pretty much.

I don’t think you understand that transition isn’t measured by points.

So they had someone worse than Rielly?
I'm not comparing him to Rielly, it's not either or for me, I'm saying that we need another offensive piece cause Rielly has been the only one doing it for years and has taken a step back this season. Also, Ekblad would've been Florida's Rielly, so Montour is not the right comparable anyways.

Transition and getting production from the backend are two different yet related points

Ekblad has been used as a defensive guy for the last several years. He is nothing like Rielly.

Montour was Florida’s offensive producer who was weak defensively. He’s their only comparable to a Rielly.

We don't have all scouting reports the Leafs have.

Leafs haven't done a great job drafting, developing and keeping defenders.

I think they're just stuck being weak in this position for the next several years.

Between GM and Coach, how many really have any faith in this team in this area?

No totally... A part of transition whos consist to join the rush and yes this part could result on pts

A part of itransitik s ability to make quick first pass and this part of transition doesn't result in pts

I would take Ekblad over Rielly any day.
You should see what Florida fans say about him, or how much they shit on him in the playoffs. Many of them are ok with him walking rather than signing him to a big deal as well. Forsling is the MVP of that defense.
