with MacKinnon ...he hasnt really lit things up since moving, and dont think he is as impactful without the threat that Mac brings.
Did Rantanen not play with Kadri on Colorado's 2nd line in their cup run? He produced pretty well there.

Wasn't their 1st line Landeskog-Mack-Nischuskin for the majority of that playoffs?

Marner is such a smart player maybe the highest IQ of any player to wear the blue and white. He will be the type of player to be a contributor to his late 30’s.

We should not let him go
Agreed, however, whether he stays or walks should ultimately hinge on their playoff success this year. I'd be fine with him walking if we get bounced early. May be time for a change.

I don't believe anyone that is honest with themselves doubts his skill or hockey IQ. But if they make another early exit in the playoffs, he's the only logical choice to go. Willy and AM34 both have NMC's and JT is a role player at this point in his career. With new majority ownership and Pelley having a year under him now, I'd expect Shanny, Tre and some of the core to be gone. Start the retool.

Inconvenient truth crushing a false narrative. Lol

I think we need to seriously look into adding someone who can slot into that #4 spot on the blueline that’s a right handed defenceman with some term on their contract. Carlo would be my target, Murphy would be another. What do people think it would cost to acquire Carlo?

To Toronto: Brandon Carlo
To Boston: Conor Timmins + Nick Robertson + 2025 2nd Rounder

It's been a shit show. There is not other way to describe him. The fact there is not comment about his play is scary. He gets no flak
10 points in his last 11 games is pretty good from the backend. We do need the right partner for him though.

Adding a RD is good. We have two, we need three. Trading away one of our right D, so that we still have two, is not ideal.

His defense is so bad we can't even rely on it to go second round deep. He does not belong on a contender or contender hopeful.

Ideally I would keep Timmins and Myers. Benoit would be moved, but in this specific scenario, I don’t think Boston would have much interest in Benoit already having Lindholm (when healthy), Zadorov and Lohrei on the left side.

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Carlo/Murphy
Ekman Larsson - Timmins
Myers

That would be my ideal blueline heading into the playoffs.

If history didnt show he will absolutely hold out for every possible penny Id be with you. With cap predicted to go up so much his negotiating is gonna be brutal.

While the Rantenten speculation is nice to think about, just don't see it happening. I'd imagine Carolina is going to want a solid roster player in return, they aren't just giving up on the season because they can't retain him.

Nelson, while he is a solid player and the best center available, he's purely a rental as it's been speculated he wants to play for the Wild.

Suddenly Toronto is getting backed into a corner with the lack of centreman available due to waiting till the final hours. It's either pay a premium for a Nelson or B.Schenn or Laughton as the 2nd teir centerman are starting gone such as Evans, Grandlund, Gorude.
Lebrun on SC reported last night a major driving factor in Rantanen being shopped is Carolina ownership, they're not happy he isn't re-signing

Given ownership is upset, I'm not sure how much leverage the Canes really have here. Unless LA comes in with a Clarke offer we can't match, they're going to get a futures package for what looks to be a pure rental

The closest comparable is Claude Giroux from a few years back - he got a 1st, Owen Tippet and a 3rd

Rantanen is clearly better than Giroux at their respective career stages so he'll command more

If we can get L. Schenn it would be a smart cost effective move. Rielly has played the best hockey of his career paired with Schenn in the playoffs in the past.

Carolina is pressuring Rantanen and his camp to accept a deal more favourable to them. "Look, we're gonna trade you to whoever... you suuuure about that?".

Tulsky and their team are pretty smart but this seems like a circus that's going to blow up in their face. First, they shouldn't have made this deal if they couldn't understand the risk. Second, get him to like your team and city. I don't know why this is such a crucial thing. Go for a cup and the rest will take care of itself.

he scored 5 goals in 20 games during the Cup run. lit it up big time! (1 goal and 11 assists on the PP which is with Mac) 4 goals and 9 assists in 20 games at even strength (no idea how many were secondary) not like they had to face TB/Boston/Florida etc either. he also averaged less than 1 hit per game in the cup run
the toughest goalie they faced was Soros, and he gave up21 goals in the 4 game sweep, and vs the Blues, Husso finished in net that series (1 goal for Rant), swept the Oilers (40+ year old Smith) scoring 22 goals in 4 games (Rant scored the other 4 of his 5 goals this series), then the Beat TB, zero goals for Rant

color me not impressed, when we bash our guys for not being ppg vs Vasi, Skinner/Ulmark, or Bob when we play some of the best and best defensive teams every year

The stupidity of Kyle Dubas keeps on giving far into the future.

The TB lightening have strengthened their playoff roster by using Leafs 2nd round pick from 2025 as part of that trade.

Leafs 2nd round draft pick in 2025 was traded away to Phoenix/ Now Utah for the terrible signing of UFA Nick Ritchie,

The grass is always greener on the other side around here. It's just how it is.

I don't understand? Are you saying Rantanen is weak and can't compete in a deep playoff run? In contrast in heavy series Marner becomes a liability.. Rantanen doesn't. That's the difference.

Well for the first part of your comment, it appears it isn't working:

Tbh if I'm Rantanen I'd walk to UFA as well, if he's this close and there's no allegiance to your team/city you might as well see what's out there

I think even if Tulsky wanted to go down the route you suggested (self-rental and negotiate after), it wouldn't matter if Dundon says otherwise. He's known to be a hardass and it might bite them here

Why would Pittsburgh waste a retention slot for 2 seasons for only a 3rd? They can easily get 2 4ths for that retention slot without giving up the player. If they're retaining for 2 seasons it's probably for Rakell.

Yeah he looked so unimpressive putting up 25 points in 20 games playing a key role to win the cup, just dragging Colorado down every step of the way. A miracle they managed to capture the cup with Rantanen actively sabotaging the team.
