This all seems weird. He could've gotten out last July but he signed the below QO contract and took the money.

He probably wasnt worth very much on the market and his agent advised him to take the Sharks offer.

Probably not but if you take the money, it seems pretty soft to complain and want out. Oh well, it would be better for all involved then to move on. Provided any of this is actually true which I have no earthly idea.

I was watching Jake McCabe get lit up by Vegas last night and remembered that guy returned a 1st and 2nd two deadlines ago.

McCabe had an additional year remaining compared to Ferraro but he's a clearly inferior defenseman who was 3 years older at the time of the deal.

We should hold out for a 1st and 2nd for Mario.

100% getting a 1st rounder for Ferraro with these prices.

Any teams desperate for a LD and missing their first this year? I wouldn't mind a future first. Not sure how many more roster players for first moves we have left in the future so getting another first in a stronger draft would be cool.

Agreed, and I never shared this because it just seemed weird, but since STL Shark had a similar story, figured I'd add it in. Possibilities:
1) total BS, some family friends/ Mom and Dad are just trying to live the narrative that hometown boy wants to come home
2) Kunin is fine in SJ now, but was unhappy at some point and Mom and Dad couldn't keep it to themselves and shouted it to the moon
3) he hates it here, took the best offer to get him to FA/get him traded, and he and his family talk a lot in STL
4) STL Shark is my wife

You have to really take these things with a grain of salt when they come second- and third-hand. Maybe Luke said "yeah we're having a really miserable season" and parents/siblings/friends interpreted that as "I'm miserable, get me out of here!!!!". I once complained to my parents that my apartment doesn't get very much natural light and they assumed that meant I hated it and were shocked when I renewed my lease.

I wouldn't be surprised if Luke were ready to move on (and wouldn't blame him) and I don't doubt that folks here have heard the things they say they've heard, but I refuse to criticize him for a sentiment that we don't even know he has.

Besides the fact that sign-and-trades don't happen, Rantanen without an extension got Marty Necas+. Offering Ferraro, Musty, and the Dallas 1st for a theoretically signed Rantanen gets you laughed out of the league.

Unlikely to happen. Think teams know next year's draft is supposed to be better. Plus, trading next year's 1st rounder now means that they don't have it to trade at next year's deadline. More likely to get a 1st for 2025 than 2026. I'll take more ammo now as I don't think the draft is going to be that much different at ~25th overall in 2025 vs 2026.

That deep in the 1st round is always going to be a crap shoot as you have a 34.5% chance of getting a guy that plays 300+ NHL games from Pick 22-32. Comes down to scouting and targeting particular traits at that part of the draft. It's also why teams should always be willing to trade that pick when they're good and have a chance to acquire a difference maker.

Of course not. Rantanen isn't signing with us. You're just throwing assets into the ether.

News is he will not sign with Carolina, so they are shopping him and have received offers.

I cannot see the Sharks making enough of an offer to land him, and do not see that he would re-sign as he's looking at short term, not long term.

Haha, I can assure you that #4 is not the case. Can't speak to 1-3 though.

I know Kunin has been a little better this year, but I can't wait for him to no longer be a Shark. I get so irrationally annoyed when I check the boxscore of some game we got blown out in, hoping the 1 or 2 goals we scored resulted in a point for Mack, Smith or Eklund and instead I see Kunin from Grundstrom or something.
