Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Here are the results from last nights game. They are very typical from our season this year. With both expected, and actual results, playing OEL on his offside, is not a good thing. In addition, our weakest D man, defensively, has consistently been Benoit, not Timmins. We like Benny, he's tough, he's physical, but he hasn't been good this year... even with McCabe.

Interesting that Rielly - Myers had decent results... One game only, but it does show you, Morgan doesn't need a flashy partner, just someone to do what he doesn't.

It looked like I could drop the chart in here, but it didn't seem to work. Meh... doesn't work/

Lebrun on SC reported last night a major driving factor in Rantanen being shopped is Carolina ownership, they're not happy he isn't re-signing

Given ownership is upset, I'm not sure how much leverage the Canes really have here. Unless LA comes in with a Clarke offer we can't match, they're going to get a futures package for what looks to be a pure rental

The closest comparable is Claude Giroux from a few years back - he got a 1st, Owen Tippet and a 3rd

Rantanen is clearly better than Giroux at their respective career stages so he'll command more
Knies will move the needle
If u want something u gotta give

We’re saying the same thing - if the most important players get injured they’re screwed anyway. Why not bolster the lineup that will play every game?

Also - if Woll isn’t available in the playoffs I’d think Murray would be the back up.

You can bolster your lineup without depleting another. And if you're going to trade a position of strength to help another area, then make sure it's not one that will walk in 3 months. Panthers just showed you how you can do it, although 10M in LTIR helps a lot.

That's why they should probably retain Woll and Stolarz, because they've shown to be capable goaltenders, even stealing plenty of games in their short-term careers so far. If one is injured or having a tough game/stretch, you have a very good partner to turn to.

The big if when talking about Rants, is he signed or unsigned.

It changes what the Leafs would be willing to give up.

My wish***
I wish MLSE stuffs a couple millions in Marner’s jeans. Tell him to waive and eff off.

Trade/Sign Rants and use extra cap (this year) for a Centre)

If Rantanen agreed to an extension the Leafs should be willing to trade anyone and everyone from Knies on down to get him.

Let Tavares or Marner walk in the offseason. Rantanen's awesome and a much better player than either of those two playoffs chokers. He'd easily be the best winger Matthews ever played beside.

Rantanen, Matthews, and Nylander should easily be good for 125+ goals a year.

I think its a bit naive to think Rantanen is a much better player than Marner or a better fit with Matthews. Sure he is a bigger body and has a better playoff track record, but he also is terrible defensively and struggling hard in a less offensive system in Carolina. We may not be getting the Colorado Rantanen, and if we are not you risk a pretty significant downgrade on Marner for the same cost.

I’d trade Rielly for pretty much anything right now. It won’t happen though because he won’t waive.

But 7.5M for someone who is playing at about half that level is a huge cap burden. Sucks because that 7.5M could’ve been a steal, but he fell off hard this season. Maybe bounce back? Or he just doesn’t care anymore and lost the passion - feels like the latter.

Stolarz and Woll are close to interchangeable. There is a very realistic possibility that Woll is the starter come playoff time. Stolarz getting hurt may not screw this team with Woll as the backup.
In what world are they close to interchangeable when one is in a different class statistically?

Since Woll became a full time NHLer last year: 58 GP, 18.3 GSAx, 906 sv%
Stolarz: 50 GP, 50.6 GSAx, 925 sv%

The splits this year are even more drastic.

Or hes a player that generates offence on the rush and the team has transitioned to a cycle offence neutralizing his biggest strength...

How the hell is Dumoulin returning a 2nd and a prospect in 2025?

Timmins for a 3rd today please.

He's underrated but yeah that seems like a high price for his caliber. It's a huge sellers market now, prices are going to be something.

It's also at 50% retention.

I'm not an advanced stats expert but isn't this a stat that is commonly used to judge goalies?

This makes it look like Stolarz is in an entirely different tier.

Because box score stats do not tell the whole story... We have seen Woll steal games and mentally hes hard to rattle. He has proven in his short career that he shows up when needed. A 5 game stretch where hes lost his game doesnt change the fact that his body of work this season has largely been solid.

Stolarz is having a career year, but hes also played a lot less than Woll and had a length break. He's 5 games away from eclipsing his career high in starts and there is still a chance the wheels fall off.

I think he's a useful 13th forward.... Minimum contract, can play C or any other position. He isn't in my top 12, if we added one 3C, but he's my 13th guy.

To me, the best we can do, by adding only one 3C is this.

Knies Matthews Marner
McMann Tavares Nylander
Robertson 3C Domi
Lorentz Kampf Steeves
Holmberg

I'd rather have McMann on the third line, and maybe try Domi with Matthews again... but... that's kind of how I'd see the top 13... Holmberg is too cheap, and too much utility to get rid of.

Which would take our offense from our D, from bad, to absolutely terrible. Ferraro has 11 points, Reilly 32.
He’s my 13th guy too, which means he isn’t on your team. He’s depth. If someone wants him, good.

Woll has been a .906 goalie the last 2 seasons, no ones making judgements off a small stretch. I have been preaching on here that he is a middle tier goalie since the off-season. Not a bad goalie, just not a great goalie.

This also isn't a career year for Stolarz (yet).

How about Rielly for Walman (32 points) and Ferraro. (we may have to add a bit)

We ending up saving more than a million too.

Why would San Jose do this?

Then we still have too many LD problem, and not enough RD.

Rielly likely doesn't waive anyway.

If we are going to make this type of change, it's an offseason one... the probable best opportunity, is Chychrun as a free agent, then move Rielly.
