Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

I actually think Risto would be a good fit. Huge upgrade on Benoit or Myers. Solid Pk'er.

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Risto
Oel - Myers

I don't mind that defence. Although with rumours on Andersson's availability out of CGY, what an addition that would be. Doubt we can get him tho.

I object to Laughton cuz I feel like he is overpriced and does not contribute enough offence for what we would pay. Given the premium on centers, I wonder if acquiring a better winger for cheaper might be more astute? Someone like Rielly Smith, for example.

I don't like the Tavares and Nylander fit though. Which is why I'd rather get a center. But slim pickings it seems like.
Apparently, Smith has an 8 team no-trade list. Wanna guess what 7 of those teams R?

It's easier to do it this way.

List the top 6 C's the Leafs have developed in 20 years.

List the top 4Ds

List the 1Gs

Now list the wingers.

Let me give you heads up. It's a small list, like pathetic bad outside getting top 10 picks.. they hardly develop anyone that isn't a shoe in.

I get what you are saying.. .and yet..

Toronto has 8 drafted players on their roster
Florida has 4.

I'd guess if you take a look outside of top 10 picks, our experience isn't too different than anyone else's, we are just micro-focused on our own team. Like if you looked at NHL games played, but players drafted outside the top 10.. it would be comparable.

It all depends on the price to acquire. It would also require some form of retention. They'd make us better, no doubt about it.

That might be easier but it seems like a total shift in the discussion. Why are we going back twenty years on anything? Who was around twenty years ago that is relevant to a current discussion?

I jumped in late here, if we are talking about the entire history of the organization then this is not a discussion I want to engage in right now. Apologies for intruding.

Why twenty years? Why not eighty years? I can stock lots of names into your list then.

As for current and recent management and development teams? Under Shanahan?

Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Reilly
Knies
McMann
Woll

Are there many teams with more homegrown talent over the same timeframe?

As for actual TBDs, we still have a few...Cowan, Minten, Robertson, Holmberg, Hildeby, Aktyamanov (sp), Danford, Grebyenkin.

It's amazing at the TDL how these players become Allstars
Brock Neilson having a crappy year
Laughton having on ok year.
Risto sucked the last 3 yrs

For some reason people don't think we have a cap to worry about.

Ristolainen has been good for about 12 months now

I actually give credit to Torts on that, probably saved the guy's career.

Nelson has 35 even strength points. Matthews has 36. I’ll take that all day. Run 3 combos of Matthews-Knies, Nelson-Marner, J.T and Nylander.

Thats just players that remained in the system

Sandin, Grundstrom, T. Moore, Hyman, C. Brown, Kapanen, Dermott, Holl, Marchment, Mikheyev, Engvall, Liljegren

Even if its not the most endearing list, these are all players who broke into the league with Toronto or spent time with the Marlies and are currently still playing in the NHL.

Not sure I like the idea of Ristolainen, even at 50%.

I know he's having a bit of a Renaissance year, but Rielly isn't. Rielly-Risto seems like a match made in hockey hell.

I have seen him play the leafs 3 time he was average one game the other 2 didn't hear his name he was a ghost

Rantanen will be if Marner is asked to waive and the swap.
Only 2 ways Marner would ever waive right now. 1.( He’d be willing to play the next 8 years in Carolina) 2. (He already had an extension lined up prior to the trade being made, sort of like a sign and trade)

I said this last summer but if Marner ever chose to leave Toronto it’s going to be somewhere like LA. They have the room to sign him, amazing weather and most importantly to him is 1/100th of the media attention. He could play with a young team, make the playoffs, make a ton of money and go to the beach on off days.

Who would be open to the Leafs shutting down Mathews until the playoffs to give him time to heal properly, as he still seems 'off' to me, and a HUGE amount of cap space to play with, ala Vegas, and maybe what Florida is doing with Tkchuck.

If they could legit keep him there on LTIR without any problems from league doctors...I feel like we get more scrutiny than other teams.

Torts, and having a steady defensive partner to clean up for him in Zamula develop well. That's the key to know... Zamula is a left handed version of what we need for Rielly.

The timeline of these three RHD defencemen (Seth Jones, Colton Parayko, Rasmus Ristolainen) has been hilarious.

- Started off careers very strong.
- Then fell hard, weren't any good.
- Now back in high demand.
