Right. Right. Right.

These hypothetical scenarios (at least in my case) are predicated on conditions being met and what we need.

If Marner's off-ice judgement is as good as his on-ice, I wouldn't bet against him moving to a region with a hot real estate market vs Chicago, lol.

Mock off season v1:

To VGK: Marner (50% retained)
To CGY: Marner 50% retention, TOR 24 1st (23OA)
To TOR: Markstrom, Roy, Theodore

CGY gets a 1st for Markstrom without retaining 2 years (apparently their goal). VGK saves 2.75M in cap, pick up a star player (they love shiny toys). Toronto picks up a top pair D that is good defensively, a 1G and a good 3C.

To EDM: Robertson
To TOR: Holloway

Robertson isn't a strong fit in Toronto and most likely won't replace Domi or Knies in the top 6 anytime soon. McMann is a better fit for bottom 6 LW. Holloway is a stronger fit for the bottom 6 and can play bottom 6 C if necessary. Edmonton takes the gamble on a top 6 forward. Robertson would score 30 goals next to McDavid and Holloway might never score more than 10 but I do this deal all day knowing Robertson won't reach his full potential in Toronto.

To VAN: Rielly
To TOR: Garland

Toronto now has Theodore, McCabe, Benoit as 1,2,3 LD. Rielly is part of the core for better or worse and the Leafs may want to move on from him as well because he can't defend at all and he has failed to lead their PP. He isn't worth 7.5M if he isn't leading PP1. I am assuming he would waive to go to his hometown team. Vancouver picks up a long-term 2LD for 2.5M in additional cap. This won't affect their cap structure long-term and they can still retain Zadorov and Hronek to round out their top 4. Toronto picks up a good top 9RW.

To PIT: Kampf, 24 7th
To TOR: 24 4th

Cap dump. I am assuming Dubas would take on Kampf. Dewar/Holmberg are perfectly fine 4C's for much cheaper than Kampf.

UFA Signings:
Domi 4Mx4
Montour 7Mx7
Demelo 4Mx4

RFA Signings:
Dewar 1Mx2
Holloway 1MX2
Liljegren 2.5Mx3

Roster:
Screen Shot 2024-05-06 at 11.56.37 AM.png

Tavares' deal expires in 2025 and his money is used to re-sign Theodore (8Mx8) and McCabe (5Mx4?). With the cap rising to 92M they can either re-sign Tavares as 2/3C or pursue Sam Bennett in UFA.

You can move out Jarnkrok in this mock and replace him with Cowan but I'm hesitant.

Both are overpaid but one is just overpaid for longer. If Rielly gets moved, which I believe he should, he will have all the leverage. He most likely only wants to go to a handful of teams (nice markets or his home). Most teams in nice markets are flush with LD, Vancouver actually has room for him at 2LD. Vancouver would have all the leverage here and they'd want to send a contract out so Garland is all I can see them giving up for him.

With the following drafts picks we select.

#8 Sam Dickinson LD 6'3" 205lbs
#23 Charlie Elick RD 6'3 185lbs
#36 EJ Emery 6'3" RD

Note, I still have $7.4 mil in cap space left, but this gives a year for the kids to prove what they have, we draft three good D, who would likely for our core for a decade once they make the league. The quality of UFA's in 2025 are pretty high, and we'd have quite a bit of cap space... I'd say around $15 mil..

I don’t want him back but if Marner signs for a “discount” at say $10.5 AAV for 8 years. How would you feel as a fan?

I don’t think I would want him back at any number.

Yea, I think when moving Marner, we need to be open to taking a step back next year. If retaining salary gets us decently better value, do it. If getting picks/prospects gets us better value than if we're trying to get guys who could immediately help in 2024, do it.

In 2025, the Tavares $$ will also be off the books, giving us significant flexibility. There's also a good chance Cowen, Grebenkin, and/or Minten will be filling moderately import roles (eg middle 6 wingers and 3rd line C) for us for very cheap, also giving us further flexibility. But next year, it's unlikely that group would have much impact.

We're at the tail end of our competitive window - we've blown through 8 years with this core, have a fairly thin farm system, etc. Need to build it back up, but with a different vision.
What is a step back for the Leafs?
Not making the playoffs or losing in the first round in 5 games?
MM is not the diff between Leafs making the playoffs or not. And the way he performed last two playoffs series, don’t think it matters much either.

Puke, I’d rather ride out the last year of JT’s deal with him playing 3rd or 4th line centre then to acquire a captain that gets benched during the most important part of the season because he has “issues”. If Torts can stand him, I probably think it’s wise to stay clear of him……..

Interesting, lots of options to recoup some of the future Boy Wonder threw away……..
ye, cuz torts is reasonable and a great judge of character lol. its fine that people dont like the player but using john tortorella as a reason why he isnt good isnt the best argument imo

I started that before Benoit signed. I personally like Lily, and would keep him at $3 mil... feel free to create your own mock. We need someone who can move the puck, and play on the PP, which he can.

Pesce is someone that worries me. His skating isn’t a strong attribute of his to begin with and he’s now entering in his 30’s. I think we’ve already seen a slight regression in his play this past season and a lot of the feedback regarding that was his foot speed. I guess you can get away with it more as a defenceman than a forward but he’s also someone who isn’t particularly physical despite his size. He’s going to want term and I can see him falling off a cliff in year 3 like Brodie. IMO he’s fine at his current cap hit but if he’s looking at 5.5+ per, not sure how I’d feel about that. At that point I’d rather invest that money in Roy.

Valid points on Pesce, and I'm somewhat concerned too. I just don't think Roy makes it to UFA, but I could be wrong.

At the price of Tarasenko why not bring back Bertuzzi? At least we know Bertuzzi fits with Matthews/Domi and you can slide McMann/Robertson down to the 3rd line.

Other than that I think it's fine but I don't think that team makes the playoffs. My model has that roster projected for 89 points (92 if you remove Merzlikins).

Tarasenko is signed for one year, for above market price.... I think Bertuzzi is looking for term. He was ok, but he wasn't worth $5.5 mil. Honestly, there is enough cap room left to add Bertuzzi to the team for $5 mil, if he'd do one year.. there is room for change in the roster.

As I stated at the beginning, it's a retool year... if they don't make the playoffs, that's ok... other than no first rounder sucking.

Sean Couturier is who I'd be targeting. He recently changed agents to Brisson's group. Friedman mentioned it on a recent 32T that he may be looking for a trade. He's exactly the kind of matchup 2C this team needs. Let Tavares drop down to 3C or LW.

Hell if Philly is dumb enough to want Marner (doubtful unless Torts goes), I'd offer them whatever they want with Marner for a Couturier+Konecny package if TK can be re-signed

???? They have 5.8 million.
Lehner is done

Oh, you are correct.

11 forwards
7 defensemen
2 goalies
~ 82 million

So someone retains $5mm it would work, and they'd have 12 forwards, letting Marchessault walk.

And it is Vegas so probably someone making $9mm will be on LTIR for however long it takes to get under the Cap.

For me at this point, 2024/25 is a retool year. Keefe and Shanahan are gone. Tavares has C removed.. argue whether it goes to Mo or Matthews.

Not bad. I really hate the Merzlikins addition. I really don't like Lyubushkins extension. It doesn't fix any of the issues that plagued the Leafs in the season + post-season. I do like the picks/prospects addition.

Couts will be 32 later this year and is signed until he’s 38

11 goals, 38 points .. for $7.75 AAV. With his injury history you wonder about longevity and effectiveness IMO.

I like the player but he’s trending towards more of a solid #3C .. and that contact is looking like it could be an anchor in 2 years.

I’d pass. Even if it brought Konency with him.

Couturier really had 2 separate seasons. 1st half he was looking like his old self. 2nd half he got named captain, and the wheels inexplicably fell off. There was beef with Torts, and likely some fatigue from his first full season in a while.

With a guy of his pedigree I'd take my chances. Even if he loses some of that offense he used to have, he becomes more of a Staal/Danault type he'd still be valuable. Maybe Philly retains a bit to make a trade work

I like the second round pick we get with Merzlikins.

The free agents goalie crop this year isn't good at all.

As far as Boosh is concerned... led the team in +-, was physical, did what was asked.. I thought he made a decent partner for Rielly....

The issues in the playoffs were the PP, scoring, coaching, scoring... .I don't think the Rielly partner should address any of those issues, no matter who you choose.... if you want to address it on another pairing, or in other ways sure... but the Rielly partner should be the guy ensuring Rielly being a defensive liability isn't a big issue for the team.. and it wasn't with him.
