Unless it's a top 5 pick, immediate impact player. I don't see the sense in trading Marner for futures. Would rather do something like Pulock +

I know people hate it. But the

Nelson/pulock 18th pick one makes sense to me.

This is only if we are known to be moving on from Marner. I still think he is easy to keep and sign

I would do Theodore. Or.

Hague/whitecloud 1st for Marner? From Vegas.

Pulock Nelson 18th overall for Marner is a yes for me. Not a huge fan of Brock Nelson, but it's a 2nd line center for 1 year, which works okay. In theory we could even trade Brock Nelson somewhere else afterwards, if that seems to make more sense. Not sure Islanders want to do this unless Marner wants to extend there.

Whitecloud 1st (and a lot of cap space) is also a yes for me. Vegas probably would have to pay Chicago or San Jose or somebody to retain some of Marner's salary, which is fine and isn't really our problem to worry about.

Theodore is a yes, but I'm not sure Vegas would do it. Trading Whitecloud most likely, or possibly Hagg or McNabb instead, makes a lot more sense for them.

What I want to see in October...

25 MAN ROSTER
(waive 2 players, prob Abruzzese and Rifai)

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Domi - Nylander
Robertson - Holmberg - Dewar
McMann - Kampf - Jankrok
(Gregor/UFA) - Abruzzese - Reaves

Rielly - Lybushkin (2 years max)
McCabe - Pesce
Benoit - Liljegren
Rifai - Timmins

Woll
(Nedeljkovic/Vladar) (can get him for 7th round pick)

or alternatively, send Marner Liljegren to NYR in some sort of trade where we get Trouba and Kakko back. Get Rangers to pay Utah to retain salary on Marner if NYR don't have the cap space to make it work.

Knies - Matthews - Kakko
Tavares - Domi - Nylander
Robertson - Holmberg - Dewar
McMann - Kampf - Jankrok
(Gregor/UFA) - Abruzzese - Reaves

Rielly - Trouba
McCabe - Pesce
Benoit - (Lybushkin/Chatfield)
Rifai - Timmins

Woll
(Nedeljkovic/Vladar)

Next summer, Tavares, McCabe, Nedeljkovic and possibly Lybushkin contracts expire. Knies and Woll get raises. Presumably one Cowan or Minten will be making the team and will replace Tavares as a top 6 winger (Domi becomes full time center by next summer). Niemela will become waiver eligible and probably good enough to make the team.

New core is Matthews Nylander Rielly Pesce and the new "Tavares" guys (sort of core guys but not gonna be here in 5 years) are Marner/Trouba and Domi. If Woll and Liljegren/Kakko really prove themselves next season then they become "won't be here in 5 years" semi-core.
Coming back to this, what it would look like to start the 25/26 season :

green = new roster player
red = UFA aged on last year of contract (2026 UFA)

Knies - Matthews - Cowan
Kakko
- Domi - Nylander
Robertson - Minten - Jarnkrok
Holmberg
- Kampf - Dewar
13 - McMann
14 - Reaves

Rielly - Trouba
( UFA )
- Pesce
Benoit - Niemela
7 - ( Timmins or other 7D )

Woll
(starter if Woll regresses, backup if Woll excels)

As an outsider, the player I am looking most at is JT and the fact that in the playoffs he has underperformed every year in the playoffs. I truly believe the hatred towards MM has been and was always created by the media to take the blame off of AM and JT. JT, local boy comes home and does good-but he hasn't and his cap hit has screwed the leafs more than any on ice play by MM

This isn’t really accurate fyi.

Marner caused himself issues by holding out and having his family in the media.

When Matthews signed his contract, marners agent came out and started talking about how it was ridiculous.

His dad was going on the radio saying that Mitch should be captain and he’s a “center that plays on the wing” and how disrespected Mitch is.

now to be fair to him. Lou may have started it by telling Marner that he doesn’t do performance bonuses for ELC and giving them to Matthews. I was all for Marner getting that money back in his next contract.

But he held out. Got over paid. Derren Ferris was going on the news directly/via dreger about how Marner was getting 13 from Columbus and threatening to sign. A sheet.

Then he played terrible in Montreal. Puck over glass in the playoffs and threw a fit.

This year he keeps out of now where (seemingly) picking fights with the media and fans.

He is a great player. But he has a persecution complex. Thinks he is Batman instead of accepting being robin.

I think it’s best for both to part ways.

Marner signed for 10.9 when rants signed for 9.5

JT signed for 11 when SJ offered 13.

JT took less to come here as a 27 year old 2 time hart finalist.

Marner took more.

The fanbase has been criminal to JT because the cap was flattened.

Marner hasn’t done himself favours.

Except it’s top5 plus cap space right?
So, pick plus Skjei? Pick plus Reinhart or Guentzel? Pick plus Roy and Arvidson?

I wouldn’t trade Marner and think we should wait out the Tavares contract 1 more year. Fire Keefe, get rid of Samsonov and sign a good dman in free agency.

Shanny, Keefe, Marner, Sammy, and JT (if you can) need to go. If you have to suffer with JT for next year, do not resign him. We need to change the culture of the team too.

I don't mind what Tre has done this year. But seeing what he did in Calgary kind of makes me worry. Don't know of the alternatives that exist at the moment.
They should just keep Tre and make Tavares Asst GM. He would make Dumbad look amateur. At least Tavares has been in the trenches. It worked for Boston..ie Neely.

Are you saying we should keep Marner as a 1 year self-rental (he leaves as a UFA next summer)? Or we should keep and extend him longer?
I would extend him. Personally don’t want to give up on him yet, even though he’s failed us so far. I think he will turn it around immediately after we give him away.

It makes me wonder what many posters do for a living because it is some fantasy level lunacy to think the Leafs have any leverage.

There is nothing worse than work environments where either management or employees fail to understand who has the leverage in a given situation.
It makes me wonder what you do when you think a situation is solely defined by a very narrow notion of short term leverage- no consideration for the long term, the parties objectives, or how they align.

Sure, Marner has lot's of "leverage" in that he gets to choose his destination, and could spitefully refuse to waive at all. What does exerting that leverage get him? What does he want?

Talked with a Kings fan after both teams where eliminated.

He suggested a Marner deal for a package built around Adrian Kempe. That perked my ears. I wouldn't hang up the phone.

Doubt it happens, but it was an interesting hypothetical. I do like a guy with 9 goals in his last 11 playoff games.

Ignoring the trade speculation with Marner (useless to talk about because he has all the power).

I think Brad signs 2 UFA d-man, with some term and decent coin to them... I'm thinking its going to be Zardorov / Roy/Pesce/Walker type off season. They are able to get two quality d-man in UFA. (ideally Pesce for me).

Trade Lillypad for a forward/picks. (He was brutal in the playoffs, big boy hockey doesn't suit him).

Trade 1st for a forward with term.

He also is not going to retire - therefore if we don't want him back he's going to have to choose somewhere else to play

Option A- play out the season in a potentially hostile, unhappy environment, with potential changes to role, risk of injury, no ability to lock in an extension BUT he gets to exercise his power over the Leafs and maybe get a bidding war going as a UFA

Option B- play ball, take part in a process that sees him land somewhere that wants him with and lock in the 80+ million dollars

Friedman “wonders” if Seth Jones would be a fit for us.
Yuck, now Werzneski on the other hand...

He could play ball and go with option B, but either way he still has all the power so.

VGK have $897k capspace for 2024-2025.

Would need retention from about 3 teams to make it work.

Kakko is hardly an nhler.

New VGK proposal:

To VGK: Marner (50% retained) (-2.75M)
To CGY: TOR 2024 1st, Liljegren, Marner 50% salary (-0.55M)
To TOR: Markstrom, Theodore, Roy (+3.3M)

What if he demands another full No Movement Clause? Do you give it to him or let him walk if he won't compromise?
He’ll definitely demand one I believe, I’d be interested in a 4 year deal like Matthews so we aren’t attached to him forever. I don’t think he’s earned an 8 year deal.

Jarnkrok to Utah for the Leafs 2025 2nd then offer sheet Schneider or Korczak 3Mx5.

Either would be extreme high risk high reward.
Jarnkrok for a 2nd rounder is definitely NOT extreme high risk, the guy was completely useless in the last 2 years of playoff hockey, the definition of a complete non-factor

Would you guys be absolutely out on a Seth Jones deal? Money wise it seems like it has to be him plus some thing or two for Marner, but just that stuff aside. What about just adding Seth Jones the player, in general, if we can make the money work? Flawed player but not sure there is going to be a more talented RD in the UFA market or available.

That depends, are the Hawks eating 50% of his $9.5m contract for the next 6 years?
