You can sign a #5 no problem in the off season so no, it's not more valuable.
IMO the idea is to spend your free agent money where it counts (top of the rotation) and go with cheaper home-grown talent to round it out.

It still doesn't make sense. Duda is their 1B.
Edwin for Wheeler suddenly makes sense as another rotation arm in the mix for next year with potentially 3 starters from this staff gone.
Edwin can pinch hit tonight but not healthy enough to DH and hit 4 times?

Norris will be starting against the O's on Sunday. Let's go buddy!
Jays are a powerhouse in the Mlb ....man just get a decent closer
Marcus Stroman seems think Price will be in TO come September....with his see you in Sept tweet....

Another way of looking at it is simply thru WAR. Price has a 3.5 WAR this year, so he should be projected for about +1.0-1.5 wins down the stretch.
Do you think Norris, Boyd and Labourt will combine to have +1.5 WAR at the MLB level over the next 6-7 years?

I would even go as far as saying that they are the best .500 team in history.
At this point my hopes of dumping Navarro are pretty much at zero. He's been on the market all season and it's down to less than 24 hours.
I'd love for them to dump him so Thole can just catch Dickey instead of Martin, but I just don't see it happening.
I see what you're saying, but realistically, the difference between Price and Doubront, even over 13 starts, is probably a lot more than 1-1.5 wins.
Pretty sure WAR is cumulative isn't it? So wouldn't it be at this point in the season his WAR is 3.5?
That would mean another ~2 WARs?

Ya, it should be a bit more than that actually since that #5 position that he's knocking off the rotation likely carried a negative WAR value, I just don't care to look up how much negative value it holds with how many people have rotated thru that spot.
Yes. Steamer (ROS) projects his RA9-WAR to be 1.9. 4th behind Kershaw, Sale, and Scherzer.
