You can sign a #5 no problem in the off season so no, it's not more valuable.

IMO the idea is to spend your free agent money where it counts (top of the rotation) and go with cheaper home-grown talent to round it out.

Call me crazy, but I was more excited about the Tulo trade simply because he will be here for the long haul.

While obviously we needed starting pitching help..badly..I just don't want to get attached to this guy as a Jay just to see him walk in the winter.

I've always been a massive Price fan though, so nice to see the Jays going for it!

Edwin for Wheeler suddenly makes sense as another rotation arm in the mix for next year with potentially 3 starters from this staff gone.

Wheeler is reportedly out until mid-2016, and that's assuming there are no setbacks.

Edwin can pinch hit tonight but not healthy enough to DH and hit 4 times?

Looks like they also want Martin to rest at C after last night, but with the way he's hitting, slot in at DH.

A few names that have went under the radar the jays should consider IMO are Jonny Gomes and Will Smith.

Gomes adds more leadership the clubhouse and that playoff experience which is really important in the games down the stretch. Costs $4M which can be replaced by dumping Navarro somewhere.

Will Smith has a great strikeout rate and groundball rate. Fantastic and the rogers center. The other thing is he is under team control until 2020. He costs next to nothin right now at 550k. Would make an absolutely fantastic 3 punch with Osuna and Sanchez in the pen. He did have an issue with a foreign substance on his hand this year though.

Apparently Jays are targeting a reliever, as someone posted on the main HF baseball forum

Uh no that's not Stroman's thinking....Stroman thinks he'll be back from his injury in September and thus will see Price when he's back....

At this point my hopes of dumping Navarro are pretty much at zero. He's been on the market all season and it's down to less than 24 hours.

I'd love for them to dump him so Thole can just catch Dickey instead of Martin, but I just don't see it happening.

I would even go as far as saying that they are the best .500 team in history.

Another way of looking at it is simply thru WAR. Price has a 3.5 WAR this year, so he should be projected for about +1.0-1.5 wins down the stretch.

Do you think Norris, Boyd and Labourt will combine to have +1.5 WAR at the MLB level over the next 6-7 years?

I see what you're saying, but realistically, the difference between Price and Doubront, even over 13 starts, is probably a lot more than 1-1.5 wins.

Pretty sure WAR is cumulative isn't it? So wouldn't it be at this point in the season his WAR is 3.5?

That would mean another ~2 WARs?

They sort of are... by a pretty big margin.

Then you give up a small C-level prospect to a team like the Philies for some AAA pitching depth and to take on Navarro's contract.

If that's the comparison Price's WAR is probably like 7 down the stretch :laugh::laugh:

Ya, it should be a bit more than that actually since that #5 position that he's knocking off the rotation likely carried a negative WAR value, I just don't care to look up how much negative value it holds with how many people have rotated thru that spot.

It's actually realistic to say Price could go 10-3 and whoever #5 would've been could've gone 3-10.

That's a hell of a swing.
