Valencia leading off? You're kidding right? Tulo, even though he's got power and can be suited for a middle of the order spot, he gets on base a ton, and having him there gets him the maximum number of at bats.
Would you not rather have him driving runs in? I would much rather get him an AB 2 spots later and take the chance there will be guys on in front of him more often.

I'd rather have Donaldson driving runs in, if you put one of your weaker hitters at the top then you're increasing the chances Donaldson comes to the plate with nobody on.

When you don't have that leadoff type of hitter who gets on base and has speed, it makes way more sense to have your best hitters getting the most at bats.

I think a deal around Alford, Pentecost and Reid-Foley would get it done. They might want Smoral over Foley though.

someone might want Smoral over SRF? Us(as if we'd prefer to trade) or the Padres? If it's the Padres they're not all that bright.

Tulowitzki, and Price. Biggest Trade deadline splash in a long time. Hopefully there were some contract talks between the two sides before this trade was completed.

The Jays have David Friggin Price.

Shields has had a mediocre year and sucks in the playoffs, no thanks.

His cost is also lower because of this.

He's probably a better option than Dickey and it pushes everyone down a spot:

Price
Buerhle
Shields
Estrada
Dickey

This would also move Hutch to the pen which might suit him better. Hutch's problem seems to be consistency through multiple innings so having him go max effort for one inning might suit his strengths better.

Valencia has not had issues getting on against lefties is my point. It is definitely not a long term solution but it would have made sense for tonight. Then when Travis is back or they get Pompey up he can move back to his spot near the bottom of the lineup.

Is this all as exciting as I think it is? Haven't really followed the Jays since the 90's, but this looks like a fun bandwagon to jump on.

How has Oakland been burned? Who did they give up that became a big star? It didn't work out for Oakland, but it's still too early to judge how the guys they gave up turned out.

They gave up the top 3 prospect in baseball and another top 100 prospect. The Lester deal had Cespedes going back the other way.

No chance I'd move Hutch to the bullpen over Estrada. The kid has starter stuff and has run into a bit of bad luck. I think the confidence of not having to be at the top of the rotation could do him wonders.

I'd go with:

Price
Shields
Buerhle
Dickey
Hutchinson

Power lefties are hard to come by. He is huge and has a natural cut on his fastball. Yes his mechanics suck but if they Padres feel they can help him fix them he will be a very good pitcher.

Personally I thing SRF is the safer bottom rotation guy with an outside shot at being a big difference maker, while Smoral is more of a #1 or bust type guy.
