Without the unexpected stagnant cap, we would have likely kept one, and then traded one to do what we ended up doing - reallocate their money into defense, goaltending, and re-signing other depth forwards.

So we would have had to get rid of at least one due to poor cap management and them not being worth the contract. Even with a significant cap raise

Aka the deals were a mistake

Would have had nothing to do with poor cap management or them not being worth the contract. Both were traded for positive value. It was just reallocating that money elsewhere, which is pretty normal and common.

You don't need to allocate money you've invested into signed contacts if those contracts are good value and you manage the cap well

Unfortunately the contracts were not and we managed the cap horrendously

Not true at all. Teams constantly make decisions to reallocate money differently, with trades, free agency, etc. It's not an indication of cap mismanagement or bad contracts (not sure how you're even arguing this when we got positive value for both). It's just teams deciding to go in a different direction, or wanting to address a certain position more.

We're going to need a Muzzin replacement soon

Sandin won't replace Muzzin

Probably should be looking at a quality 2 LHD with size and a bit of grit who can pass the puck well over the next 12 months

Maybe this year, maybe next year, maybe the year after. We shall see if and how Muzzin rebounds this year. But for certain we will need a guy with size, who can play physical. Where our opinions differ, is I’m ok if it’s a RHD… really it doesn’t matter, just someone physical with size.

Man, we have the New Winter Soldier.

Except opposite.

Quite a few posters have stepped up and filled the shoes of The Winter Soldier, unfortunately. With a few of them, it's very easy to see which of them are his burners based off of the posting history (logging in at the same times) and the posting style/grammar.

What? We traded both of those players for assets

If those contracts were bad value we would have needed to give assets up to get rid of them

There's some pretty irrational takes going on in here

Lou ***** up but it's Dubas fault because he can't make a monumentally bad mistake disappear for nothing and players we traded for assets had bad contacts

Huh?

How many other teams sign young players to multi year deals and dump them the next year because they don't have cap space for 3 million dollar contracts?

Oh none

Thanks for playing

Nope, it's the fault of the person that created the mess in the first place not the guy given the task of cleaning up a mess he had no part in creating
Nope but all good if that’s what you believe.
You can either make the most out of a bad situation or compound it. I believe he compounded it.

The fact that the Leafs have not advance pass the first round ever since Dubas took over with such a talented roster and literally the biggest UFA signing at that point shows Dubas and the players still got works to do.

It’s also funny how some here look at advancing pass the first round as some sort of Everest and should give credits to MGT and players for making it close is really sad.
Signing JT was a step toward winning the Cup, drafting AM and others was meant to win the Cup.

Sofar both MGT and players had failed.

I was thinking for RHD we need a Brodie replacement.. which lilijgren serves pretty well. Brodie isn't physically imposing really, just smart and solid positionally, which Lilijgren can be for us

Then Niemela comes in a year or two and is the offensive RHD on the second pairing who plays with the physical LHD we acquire.

If we get a RHD that is like Muzzin, can keep Sandin and have him be the 2nd pairing offensive player, and look to deal Niemela after a few years for a position of need in the future.

I disagree. This is the first summer since I signed up here over a decade ago where there aren't any/many anti-Leafers. Just a bunch of people who think the GM isn't good. Then a "vocal minority " , the new buzz term here, seems very offended with this anti-GM trend.

Even with zero evidence to support yourself, it is normal and common for any fan base to direct most blame to the GM in our current circumstances, so this off season has been uneventful for me. There's literally nothing unusual occurring.

Or Liljegren replaces Brodie. Sandin second pair, physical RHD. Niemela plus physical LHD.

We didn't compound it. Continuing with the same analogy, this would be like blaming the company for "compounding the situation" because they paid to clean the carpet instead of leaving the mess stinking up the place while trying to operate a successful business. Anything other than paying to clean it up is not realistic or advisable.

Could the reaction to the supposed "anti-GM" posters have anything to do with the fact that this board probably leads the league in the number of posters that feature our GM in their avatars? I have not checked every message board on HF but the number of Dubas likenesses on avatars on the Leaf board is striking. Is this normal fan behaviour?

Fans of the GM seems to be exclusive to this board and one of the most bizarre things many sports fans have ever seen.

Cleaning the carpet with a flame-thrower wasn't a good idea.
