I'm wondering though with our depth, who sits when Simmonds comes back, Vesey? Picking up another forward who sits, Boyd? The habs supposedly have lots of depth but when we're healthy we're deep af

Hey I saw some people talking about Eric Staal just wanna see how every one feels about him. Should we go for him?
IF it's me,,,he is my #1 forward target,,given all factors to weigh

enough gas tank/size/experience/skill for the 3c slot,,,heck maybe even 2nd line LW,,who knows? Thornton 2.0? adds to our C depth

should not cost a arm and a leg and by the time he would be on our cap,,that hit could be down to a 1/3 rd it is now.

Not a bad idea, but I really like how our 3rd line has played recently and we already have Spezza and Jumbo. Depends what the price is
i don't know about you

but i don't feel comfortable with someone as raw as Engvall as my 3C in the context of a serious and long cup attempt

All these proposals sound way too expensive... I get we're going all in this year but we also have a good team as it is and let's not take too much of a gamble on just this season.. we're a good team with plenty of depth and warm bodies to jump in when needed.

If the deal makes sense that doesn't involve selling the farm then you pull it.. but there are cheaper options available.

There's also Simmonds that will be placed in the line up eventually... Our Dcore is good with Sandin, Lehtonen, Liligren on stand by and a bunch of forwards including Galchenyuk and Robertson available..

It's about getting us through the playoffs with skill, experience.. Eric Stall is a cheap option which I laid out the line up on a previous post.. also Granlund for a few picks not including our 1st could be had.

Forsberg is a luxury that we don't even know will be that much of an upgrade to make a difference over what we have now while taking guys who already have gained chemistry together off the line up.

Engvall Isnt bad... But realistically it's only been a few games where he's impressed and it's not out of the woods to think he has a few bad games again and he's back on the chopping block.

Engvall Isnt going to impress anyone moving up and down the line up.. he isn't a better hockey player then Eric Staal.. I like the hyman-envgall-soup line too but we all know it's Hyman that's the glue of that line.. followed by Soup right after him.... Putting Staal in between those 2 would be an upgrade.. also you can try Staal-JT-Willy on the 2nd line Engvall Isnt going to shine there otherwise he would of already been given that shot.

Staal can move up and down the line up with his skill and experience. We only need him for a cup run, and he's affordable.

If anything you can still keep Engvall and soup together on the 4th line with Spezza.. and have Hyman-Staal-kerfoot/Simmonds on the 3rd (whoever Keefe decides they want to play with JT and willy)

And let's say Staal comes in and we sparks with JT and Nylander... You can bump kerfoot down to the 3rd and still have
Hyman-kerfoot-simmonds
On the 3rd..

You just have better star power options with depth.

Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - JT - Nylander
Hyman - Staal - Soup
Simmonds - Engvall - Spezza

Hyman - Staal - kerfoot
Spezza -Engvall - soup

Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Staal - JT - Nylander
Hyman - kerfoot/Engvall - soup
Spezza - kerfoot/Engvall - Simmonds

Injuries can have players bumped up and mixed around while holes get filled in with:
Galchenyuk, Robertson, Boyd, Petan, Barabanov, Anderson,

It's depth and versatile... Also doesn't cost much and the leafs can still get another top winger to mix in that bunch... Staal added to the PP2 is an upgrade aswell.. think about it. And it's cheap.

Nashville will retain 50% through the rest of this year and next. They're selling and they have plenty of cap room as is. Kerfoot would go the other way which would give Toronto net 500k in cap space to grab another guy like Bobby Ryan as well... It would require a premium price be paid for the retention on Forsberg, but it's my belief that the Leafs can extend Forsberg post 2022, so IMO it's worth it.

I think moving on from Anderson and going to a 1A / 1B option in net saves you about 1.5 million. Kessel comes off the cap and saves you 1.2 million more. Ultimately, I'm in favoyr of moving on from Jake Muzzin after 2022 to free up more space. A couple years from now I envision something like...

Forsberg / Matthews / Marner
Robertson / Tavares / Nylander
Mikheyev / FA / Hyman
FA / Hallander / Anderson

Reilly / Brodie
Sandin / Holl
Liljegren / Bogosian

FA
Campbell

Love the core of that team.

Dide why do you want Bobby Ryan so badly? He’s not very good/“.

I think he's instant offense in a top 6 role, for virtually nothing in terms of cost. 13 points in 24 games, on a terrible team. Big, strong, good shooter... I like vets, with something to add, that don't cost much.

I don't trust Jumbo's body to hold up all season, so I like a guy that can make an impact if inserted into the top 6.

A key reason why Thornton and Spezza are so effective is that we don't ask them to play center anymore. Same thing with Staal - you want to maximize his impact it's as an offensive winger, not a center you want to put up against scoring lines.

this is it... The Young blood brings life back into these players.. Staal isn't a washed up player... He just needs the right linemates and lesser competition to get that confidence back. He won't put up star numbers but with Hyman puck hounding and feed Staal he can still shoot the puck.. he's a smart player that can learn our system and he will be on the 2nd PP with Tavares and Nylander... He doesn't need to even be "the guy" anymore... He just needs to support them.. look how Simmonds was playing in that Support role.. these players thrive off of that knowing they are older and not expected to carry the line/team because of their name/status.

Staal is certainly an upgrade on Engvall... but what would it take to acquire him is the big question?
I think a 2nd and 4th should do it.. or a lesser prospect and a 2nd. He is a UFA and won't sign back with Buffalo.. and buffalo is not making the playoffs, unless another team offers them something better I can't seem them not taking what they can get.

He's a guy that fills our needs and one of the cheapest options available.. and we've already seen what this team can do with former stars that every one else thought was washed up and would fail (Thornton, Simmonds Spezza) there is something about playing on a cup contender team, Home town/favorite team growing up, and locker room environment that's bringing life back into these players... That's why I strongly feel Staal might thrive here....

Maybe even resign here for cheap and play a Spezza role for us to insulate the line up..

I like Dermott a lot but we’re losing a LD to Seattle and it could probably end up being Dermott. What about trading Dermott (Likely expansion draft target) + 2nd round pick for Ekholm (likely expansion draft target ask well) but we upgrade at the cost of a 2nd to try to win 16 games.

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Ekholm-Bogosian

I'm getting annoying at this point uttering a similar statement across multiple boards, but you're right. Fans like to both ask for and offer up more than a trade will take.

There is almost no conceivable trade involving a realistically available player in the NHL (save for Eichel) that would require the Leafs to move a package along the lines of Amirov, Niemela, and a 1st (as an example) when looking at recent comparables.

Even when stars are moved, the return is often underwhelming (O'Reilly and Stone), but the mock trades are always way overblown.

The Leafs also acquired Muzzin (a top pairing D) with a year left on his deal still for Grundstrom+Durzi+1st, yet you consistently see fans asking and offering up more than what he returned for comparable or lesser D.

With Kerfoot looking comfortable on the wing, it certainly looks like a center is more priority than a winger at this point.

Staal checks a lot of boxes for me, honestly. At 50% retention, he fits in cap wise. We can send Vesey the other way or waive him off the roster to bring the cap add to 100K.

He slides in at 3C, but Staal has also played W before as well, meaning we can even try him beside Tavares and Nylander and have Kerfoot back at 3C, depending on matchup. Versatility is always a good thing.

Plus, when we are running a stacked PP1, our PP2 uh, lacks a bit, so he can help there. He also tends to win more draws than he loses.

we are 5 games from 50% of the season played Staals listed cap hit would already be at 50%

If I am Keefe I dont touch Engvall or Tavares line. They are doing well. You slide Matthews in the middle with a guy thats found his game in Nylander. They have had chemistry before. If Kerfoot doesnt work with Matthews and Nylander you bring Hyman back to their line where it has played together in the past. You can also try Simmonds or Barabonov with Matthews and Nylander. Just keep Vesey away.
i don't want Engvall as my 3c if we are talking about a serious cup run

way too raw at that position for when things get real

IF he has to play there because of reasons,,fair enough

BUT IF we have a shot at putting a solid grizzled vet there ,,say Eric Staal,,count me in.

Staal would be a great add but don't kid yourself with this "favourite team growing up" thing. Thunder Bay isn't TO. As a matter of fact, people there tend to identify more with Winnipeg than Toronto or most of the rest of Ontario. And Eric idolized Gretzky as a kid. He wasn't a Leaf fan at all. It's not a given he'd even waive his NTC to come here. He might but not for any of the reasons given in this thread.

Should be looking for a legitimate difference maker, winger or center. Just get a real difference maker.

This is their best chance to get to a cup final, all the chips should be pushed into the middle of the table now.

Figure the rest out later. Injuries are inevitable, so im sure stuff will open up.
NO this is not a "all chips in"

Not with the expansion draft coming

no interest in selling the farm just to watch seattle make the deal cost even more

TBH they could do nothing at the deadline, keep their assets, and I'd be fairly content with the roster going forward.

Sometimes doing nothing can be the best thing, especially if the prices are high. Would rather Dubas stand pat than make a trade for a marginal upgrade and pay a big price. We're sitting in a good spot for patience.
i agree about the big price BUT

marginal upgrade? ,,to me that screams " at worst added depth" nothing wrong with PO depth

and the mental boost to the players,,seeing your GM push chips onto the table

Also worth noting the Leafs already don't have a 3rd rounder or a 7th rounder in this year's draft
i'm not overly concerned about this coming draft

it's going to be a total blind crap shoot

sandin/lilly/roberts/amirov/abramov just to name a few,,we looking pretty ok on the kids front
