IF it's me,,,he is my #1 forward target,,given all factors to weighHey I saw some people talking about Eric Staal just wanna see how every one feels about him. Should we go for him?
i don't know about youNot a bad idea, but I really like how our 3rd line has played recently and we already have Spezza and Jumbo. Depends what the price is
Nashville will retain 50% through the rest of this year and next. They're selling and they have plenty of cap room as is. Kerfoot would go the other way which would give Toronto net 500k in cap space to grab another guy like Bobby Ryan as well... It would require a premium price be paid for the retention on Forsberg, but it's my belief that the Leafs can extend Forsberg post 2022, so IMO it's worth it.
I think moving on from Anderson and going to a 1A / 1B option in net saves you about 1.5 million. Kessel comes off the cap and saves you 1.2 million more. Ultimately, I'm in favoyr of moving on from Jake Muzzin after 2022 to free up more space. A couple years from now I envision something like...
Forsberg / Matthews / Marner
Robertson / Tavares / Nylander
Mikheyev / FA / Hyman
FA / Hallander / Anderson
Reilly / Brodie
Sandin / Holl
Liljegren / Bogosian
FA
Campbell
Love the core of that team.
Dide why do you want Bobby Ryan so badly? He’s not very good/“.
as we have seen from Thornton/Spezza/SimmondsEngvall Isnt bad... But realistically it's only been a few games where he's impressed and it's not out of the woods to think he has a few bad games again and he's back on the chopping block.
Engvall Isnt going to impress anyone moving up and down the line up.. he isn't a better hockey player then Eric Staal.. I like the hyman-envgall-soup line too but we all know it's Hyman that's the glue of that line.. followed by Soup right after him.... Putting Staal in between those 2 would be an upgrade.. also you can try Staal-JT-Willy on the 2nd line Engvall Isnt going to shine there otherwise he would of already been given that shot.
Staal can move up and down the line up with his skill and experience. We only need him for a cup run, and he's affordable.
If anything you can still keep Engvall and soup together on the 4th line with Spezza.. and have Hyman-Staal-kerfoot/Simmonds on the 3rd (whoever Keefe decides they want to play with JT and willy)
And let's say Staal comes in and we sparks with JT and Nylander... You can bump kerfoot down to the 3rd and still have
Hyman-kerfoot-simmonds
On the 3rd..
You just have better star power options with depth.
Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - JT - Nylander
Hyman - Staal - Soup
Simmonds - Engvall - Spezza
Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Simmonds - JT - Nylander
Hyman - Staal - kerfoot
Spezza -Engvall - soup
Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Staal - JT - Nylander
Hyman - kerfoot/Engvall - soup
Spezza - kerfoot/Engvall - Simmonds
Injuries can have players bumped up and mixed around while holes get filled in with:
Galchenyuk, Robertson, Boyd, Petan, Barabanov, Anderson,
It's depth and versatile... Also doesn't cost much and the leafs can still get another top winger to mix in that bunch... Staal added to the PP2 is an upgrade aswell.. think about it. And it's cheap.
as we have seen from Thornton/Spezza/Simmonds
put those guys with younger skilled players with speed) ,>, (the biggest thing the vets lose) and their experience/IQ and remaining skill will shine thro
Too much for Forsberg. Even @50%I've suggested...
To Nashville
Alex Kerfoot (who they'll flip for a 2nd)
Rodion Amirov
Topi Niemela
2021 1st round pick
To Toronto
Filip Forsberg (retained @50%)
By Flipping Kerfoot, they'll wind up paying 4.5 million less in real cash over the next 1.5 seasons (1.5 years of Forsberg retained).
this is it... The Young blood brings life back into these players.. Staal isn't a washed up player... He just needs the right linemates and lesser competition to get that confidence back. He won't put up star numbers but with Hyman puck hounding and feed Staal he can still shoot the puck.. he's a smart player that can learn our system and he will be on the 2nd PP with Tavares and Nylander... He doesn't need to even be "the guy" anymore... He just needs to support them.. look how Simmonds was playing in that Support role.. these players thrive off of that knowing they are older and not expected to carry the line/team because of their name/status.as we have seen from Thornton/Spezza/Simmonds
put those guys with younger skilled players with speed) ,>, (the biggest thing the vets lose) and their experience/IQ and remaining skill will shine thro
I think a 2nd and 4th should do it.. or a lesser prospect and a 2nd. He is a UFA and won't sign back with Buffalo.. and buffalo is not making the playoffs, unless another team offers them something better I can't seem them not taking what they can get.Staal is certainly an upgrade on Engvall... but what would it take to acquire him is the big question?
I'm getting annoying at this point uttering a similar statement across multiple boards, but you're right. Fans like to both ask for and offer up more than a trade will take. All these proposals sound way too expensive... I get we're going all in this year but we also have a good team as it is and let's not take too much of a gamble on just this season.. we're a good team with plenty of depth and warm bodies to jump in when needed.
If the deal makes sense that doesn't involve selling the farm then you pull it.. but there are cheaper options available.
There's also Simmonds that will be placed in the line up eventually... Our Dcore is good with Sandin, Lehtonen, Liligren on stand by and a bunch of forwards including Galchenyuk and Robertson available..
It's about getting us through the playoffs with skill, experience.. Eric Stall is a cheap option which I laid out the line up on a previous post.. also Granlund for a few picks not including our 1st could be had.
Forsberg is a luxury that we don't even know will be that much of an upgrade to make a difference over what we have now while taking guys who already have gained chemistry together off the line up.
With Kerfoot looking comfortable on the wing, it certainly looks like a center is more priority than a winger at this point.
Staal checks a lot of boxes for me, honestly. At 50% retention, he fits in cap wise. We can send Vesey the other way or waive him off the roster to bring the cap add to 100K.
He slides in at 3C, but Staal has also played W before as well, meaning we can even try him beside Tavares and Nylander and have Kerfoot back at 3C, depending on matchup. Versatility is always a good thing.
Plus, when we are running a stacked PP1, our PP2 uh, lacks a bit, so he can help there. He also tends to win more draws than he loses.
I like that forward group A LOT!!!!!!!!!!Thornton-Matthews-Marner
Hyman-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Staal-Simmonds
Engvall-Spezza-Mikheyev
Boyd
With a lot of versatility
i don't want Engvall as my 3c if we are talking about a serious cup runIf I am Keefe I dont touch Engvall or Tavares line. They are doing well. You slide Matthews in the middle with a guy thats found his game in Nylander. They have had chemistry before. If Kerfoot doesnt work with Matthews and Nylander you bring Hyman back to their line where it has played together in the past. You can also try Simmonds or Barabonov with Matthews and Nylander. Just keep Vesey away.
NO this is not a "all chips in"Should be looking for a legitimate difference maker, winger or center. Just get a real difference maker.
This is their best chance to get to a cup final, all the chips should be pushed into the middle of the table now.
Figure the rest out later. Injuries are inevitable, so im sure stuff will open up.
i agree about the big price BUTTBH they could do nothing at the deadline, keep their assets, and I'd be fairly content with the roster going forward.
Sometimes doing nothing can be the best thing, especially if the prices are high. Would rather Dubas stand pat than make a trade for a marginal upgrade and pay a big price. We're sitting in a good spot for patience.
i'm not overly concerned about this coming draftAlso worth noting the Leafs already don't have a 3rd rounder or a 7th rounder in this year's draft
