If Dallas is considering tapping out on a bad luck season, I'd go after Khudobin. Two more years on the deal, all at 3.33m. Gets us a bit of cap space, cost certainty, and a guy who can get it done in the playoffs. Fred goes there in the deal, retained to match Khudobin's salary. 1st round pick and whatever B or so prospect they want.

God help the team that tries out Buffalo goalies. Pay up for a good player, goalies can make or break a season, especially in the post season. We only get one shot, so pay to get the right guy.
Khudobin would absolutely be a guy to trust if Dallas were to tap out.

Freddy is not getting traded. we have used Hutch 4 times already this year, and some think KD is going to move Freddy out? What about the shockwaves that would send through the Leafs room? Our superstar franchise centremen who happens to be really good friends with Freddy, how do you think he would take his midseason departure? I agree about moving on from Freddy after this year. My guess is Freddy will not be resigned, and if he does it will be short term equal or less AAV. This is not NHL 21, you cannot move influential players in the room without consequence. Regardless of whether moving on from Freddy may make sense to acquire a talented forward. You would be risking a huge shift in moral to accomplish that.
That is a very important aspect but when it comes down to it you need a guy that can stop pucks, nature of the business. It is highly unlikely he get's dealt though.

Carolina will have almost 8 million cap accumulated by the TDL.

The Leafs could deal them Anderson in exchange for one of their goalies (at 50% retention) because in real dollars Anderson is still cheaper than either of their goalies at 50% retention.

That opens up over 3 million in cap for the Leafs to use on other players at the TDL.

We can then flip Reimer (presumably, since he is not great either) for another goalie.

I've suggested that being a possibility in the past. Andersen going to Carolina/Washington and the Leafs getting a goalie (Ullmark, Kuemper, whoever) from a 3rd team is the likely scenario if we are not sticking with Andersen... And if I am Dubas, I am exploring that scenario as seriously as any top 6 forward scenario right now.

Ya I get you. I just don't know of many clubs who have won a cup by acquiring their starting playoff goalie at the TDL. We saw Lehner get brought into Vegas, and what circus that resulted in. Lehner played great, but the controversy was horrible. I know most propose Andersen being shopped as part of the deal, but leaning on Jack and whoever they get back in a deal is a very slippery slope. One I do not think they will ever consider going down mid season. Makes zero sense to me

Campbell and Hutch are probably average goalies at best. We've done alright with them. We don't need a star goalie to replace Andesen we just need an average one.

I'd sign Kane but not anywhere close to what's owing

1 year 800K for this year to come and play and see if hes a fit. Then if hes good a 2 year 3 million deal afterwards

What the hell does that mean? They don't have the money to pay him?

It's a complicated thing, however it's not the Sharks. It's Evander Kane. He's in significant debt, and the debt he is owed, is tied to the income from his current contract with the Sharks (aka, future earnings). By mutually terminating the contract he is on, Kane will be able to file for bankruptcy, to relieve himself of some of the debt he's in that was leaned on his expected future income.

This won't be something where a team will be able to sign him right away in all likelihood. So people thinking we cans swoop in and sign him, shouldn't get too excited.

Doesn't the NHL have a say on teams/players terminating contracts like this?
This seems extremely odd.

No. This happens regularly. However it's usually AHL level players terminating their deals to take deals overseas.

So Bettman says the cap will remain flat, or near flat, for at least the next four seasons.

Essentially the current TV deals going straight to the owners and none of it will affect the cap.

Feels bad man.

We will be fine. It sucks but it also means some other guys won't get paid as much as they originally expected either.

Leafs should be able to handle a flat cap relatively fine.

3 obvious guys you can find cheaper alternatives on are Andersen, Kerfoot, and Muzzin.

Gotta think Muzzin is shopped the offseason before Riellys new deal kicks in (if Rielly gets a new deal here).

Muzzin has a NTC but I think he will be open to a trade if the Leafs let him know he could be exposed in the expansion draft.

If we can continue to lure hometown veterans in league minimum deals, we will be golden.

Andersen abs Kerfoot need to go though. Their cap hits are needed elsewhere.

There will be a new normal and the Leafs better be careful not to overpay anyone so long as the flat cap remains intact.
