I agree. I think Sather is handling this surprisingly well. 7 years is too much, he's offering 5 at the same yearly salary. That's not a lowball offer, it's a hefty amount of money for a more reasonable number of years. Let him talk to other teams. If there's a championship caliber team that's willing to do that 7 year contract, he's free to sign with them. Having said that, I'd be absolutely shocked to see a competitive and well-run team sign that contract. If Sather thinks a UFAs price is too high, that really says something, especially when that UFA is the captain of his team and a money maker in terms of jersey sales and team promotions.

Its like poker. The successful players are the ones that force the opposition to make a decision for all their chips. In a perfect world, Im sure Callahan and his agent would love for this thing to quiet down until July when he can officially hit the market and pit other offers against the Rangers.

The Rangers aren't, and shouldnt be, operating on that timeline.

At this point it's good that the negotiating point is the term and not the money, I think Sather is handling the whole thing well with getting media involved and getting the numbers out there. I like the fact that Sather seams to be standing pat with his offer I think in the end cally will squeeze another year out of Sather I think the problem will be the clauses attached to the contract...

In all seriousness I think this is a major problem here on HF. No one expects Sather to handle contract negotiations well. I think every one is so surprised that most don't know how to react

Can we not act like Callahan is Adam Graves or something? Yes, he's had a good couple of years here statistically and as our captain. But, seriously, he was never anything that special. He never elevated his game in the playoffs, firstly, and this is someone who has been a SECOND line for the majority of his time here, and we're going to act like he DESERVES $6M over 7 years? What exactly has he done to deserve such a contract? No championships or hardware. One appearance in the conference final.

For everyone saying Cally will lose 12 mill.

Untrue.

Let's say he takes the 5 year 30 million dollar offer on the table. He'll be 34 by the time he starts his next contract.

To offer some perspective - Shane Doan signed a 4 year deal at an average value of 5.3 mill at the age of 36.

Jarome Iginla signed a 1 year 6 mill dollar deal at the age of 36.

If Callahan can maintain a similar level of play for these 5 years, which for him is much better and easier to do than 7 years, his next contract will probably be prorated to about 5-6 mill for 3-4 years.

He'll likely be gaining money. I think the 5 year deal is in his best interest.

Iginla is a former Hart runner-up and a borderline HOF who was an ironman in every sense of the word.

Doan is also an iron man and just a better player than Callahan.

His body isn't designed to last or play 75+ games a year, which is why he'll never get that kind of money again.

He is the Captain. Sather and Dolan evil pawns of the corporate world. Give Callahan 10 million a year to stick it to the man. Something like that anyway.

People just get to attached. I like Callahan a lot. He has given it his all. If he were a UFA from a different team no one here would want to give him a dime over 5 million. He is our guy though. People let feelings drive their thoughts. Successful franchises/business rarely do that.

We shouldn't give him 6 million a year over 5 years but I could somewhat stomach it. I couldn't stomach 7 years (especially with the NMC he is all but guaranteed).

Is anybody at all aside from Callahan and his agent saying that he deserves 6million over 7 years? I think literally everyone agrees that that's too much.

The room for argument is in whether or not the 5 year 30 million deal is a good one or not.

anyone think callahan's lack of effectiveness this season is a result of going less-than-100% in order to avoid injury...To ensure his big chance for a 'homerun' contract?

You guys don't think we can find anyone better than Callahan for the same $$$ in the free agency or trade ?

I don't think we need to worry about that. Callahan was irreplaceable under Tortorella simply because of the style of play Torts had this team using. It is the polar opposite under Vigneault. I don't think replacing Callahan would be extremely difficult because his strengths are being diminished from how AV runs this team.

Would we miss him? Sure. Would it be catastrophic? Hardly.

There are people who really think Callahan should stick it out and Sather should give it to him. Not that many but there are a few.

Callahan at 6 mil is a joke he's the 8th or 9th best forward on the team

Laughable

Deal him please

harsh.

but fair.

Well he's doing it wrong then considering he's missed close to 20 games. He's seemed disinterested since last season to me. Not necessarily in his play, but he's kind of faded into the background among the team IMO.

2008-09: 81 games played
2009-10: 77 games played
2010-11: 60 games played
2011-12: 76 games played
2012-13: 45(of 48) games played
2013-14: 39 (of 56) games played

4 out of 6 seasons, he missed no significant time. And I know the team is playing well now with the current lineup combinations, but I've been a fan of this team long enough to know that lines and units don't stay together forever. When things start to get stale, that will be the true test of how much this team needs or doesn't need Callahan.

I said he cannot stay healthy, not that he misses too many games to injury. He played most of the post season with a wrecked shoulder and had to have surgery on it. He played the playoffs a few years ago with a broken hand that hadn't completely healed. He plays a style of game that will likely lead to more injuries.

Sorry, I don't buy the team getting stale bit. How many times over the last few years have we watched this team play with zero compete level, and that was with Callahan at the helm. I love what he brings to the table as a player, but this is a guy who was a major part of a team that got two coaches fired because the team was mailing it in on a nightly basis.

i agree...its an awful contract at that point...i cant believe sather went that far...

i guess it's testament to sather's belief that the cap will rise significantly...i guess. at current rates, it does sound crazy.
