Move him and be done with it. He doesn't want to be here. If he wants to live out his hockey days on a sub par team like Clarkson, go ahead. Put a $ on your jersey instead of a C.

Its getting beyond that. Its starting to get ugly.

Whenever the conversation devolves into "Well you paid all these guys, so you should pay my guy too," you're in trouble.

Though Richards and Nash's salaries are not to my liking they, they are more justifiable based on their production in their careers. Callahan using that to justify an AAV of $6 million is ignorant. He is not on their level. He plays hard, but you don't pay a 2nd/3rd liner $6 million. Sorry Cally, hit the road. I refuse to be ok with another Drury situation.

Ridiculous. Everyone needs to find a villain when, in this scenario, there isnt one.

I think some people are putting too much emotion behind their thoughts on the matter. Callahan want to be paid what he thinks he is worth. Other teams are willing to pay him that. So we should trade him and get some decent assets out of it.

I love Callahan as much as the next guy, he's a huge player for us, but this is the nature of the game. I wouldn't hold any grudge on Cally if he wasn't willing to accept what the Rangers are offering.

I think Sather may actually be learning from his past mistakes by not giving Callahan the 7 years. So many long-term contracts have not worked out for the Rangers and Callahan's durability is a major concern. I understand why Cally feels slighted, but just because Sather has shelled out some bad contracts to free agents in the past doesn't mean that Sather should repeat the same mistake and overpay Callahan.

If we re-sign Girardi

Then I hope we strongly consider moving Staal while he's actually healthy & playing well.

The Rangers know the player better than the rest of the league I think rightfully so they are looking to limit term since his CarFax has alot of dings and his performance just doesn't rise to the level of salary that he's asking for. The Rangers should want to keep him but I like that they are showing some discipline on the terms.

This cost of living thing is overblown. What about the opportunities to make millions of dollars on Madison Avenue if you're a popular Ranger? NY is a big place and the cost of living varies depending on the choice the player makes.

Not really. Not to throw you into this generalization or direct it at you but most who say that it is overblown have not spent any significant time outside of NYC. Outside of the northeast and California, the vast majority of the country is significantly cheaper. My taxes in Georgia or Virginia are a fraction of what they were in NY. My pay is slightly less but the cost of living is significantly less. It is a factor.

Kind of intriguing idea to consider comparing players to vehicles.

Cally strikes me as a jeep grand Cherokee

Certainly getting a little testy in the media, but it's to be expected. Especially if the Rangers basically gave Bartlett permission to speak to a team just so they could tell him he wants too much. That's cagey by Sather, but also pretty insulting to Callahan's camp.

You can never prove it, but I'm sure Callahan's group has gotten word that a team he would sign with is willing to give him the deal he wants. The Rangers shot themselves in the foot by waiting until the last minute. Sather leverages the crap out of people on deals where he has the leverage, so we shouldn't act surprised when there is push back.

Callahan's heart might be here, but his checkbook is waiting for him somewhere else. He's a hard player to let go of, but I think the writing is on the wall. He'll be gone before mid-week I bet.

callahan didnt even get the "sather" treatment. he hadnt proven anything when he got the 2 year bridge deal and then got a decent contract because he was arb eligible when the bridge expired.

I know it is expensive to live hear in a general sense. But there are also many ways for a professional athlete to supplement their income to make up the difference.

Why would Callahan agree to an extension with another team unless they gave him what he wanted?

Callahan can speak with all of the teams in July.

Its the Rangers who want closure by the end of this week. The other camp will wait until the summer.

Sather will have to trade him as a rental.

Sather was in the same spot in 2011. He wanted to trade for Richards but Dallas wanted too much. Sather got him as a free agent and kept his assets. Richards had a no trade/no move so he controlled the situation while Callahan doesn't but Sather didn't want to meet Nieuwendyk's asking price.

The Super Bowl is over.

I heard an interview out of Buffalo with Richards' agent in the week before Richards signed with the Rangers. The agent said Richards' refuse to waive because he didn't want the team he signed with to be losing assets, like a 2nd, that could be moved during the season to make the roster stronger.

Umm no, I hope we keep both. Staal has always been the difference for this team. When he is healthy this team plays that much better. He starts shutting down forwards with his size and long reach. He gets more involved in the offense; saw it in the Islanders game friday. When Staal came back in 2011-2012 the team started to pick it up and in the playoffs that year he was very good. Last year the team was playing very well and then when he went down after getting hit in the eye, the team wasn't as consistent even with DZ playing well while he was out. Right now, this team is playing well and Staal is a large part of it. He should be here for a long time.

Callahan isn't a $6M player even if he plays 82 games. He's misses significant time every single season. He doesn't elevate his game in the playoffs. He's a heart and soul 40-50p leader. That's worth a decent chunk of change, but not $6M and certainly not for 7 years. Even so, I could reluctantly swallow the rumored NYR offer of 5Y/$30M knowing the last year or two of that contract are going to be bad. But 7 years?!?! No way. That's too much for too long. If he can get that from another team, Godspeed Cally. Trade him now before he breaks something in the Olympics.

This has officially entered pop-corn territory. I think it is all a show. I fully believe Sather, and the Callahan party both knew over the summer how this was going to end.

The entertainment extends beyond what happens on the ice and they have to give the media something to sensationalize even if they know how the story ends prior.

at this point I don't really care who he plays for, I just want the guy off the team. His heart is clearly not here, regardless of his media ploys. If his heart was here, and he gave a **** about this team, he'd be asking for NO MORE than Dustin Brown $$$.

We're not paying him, and now other teams see him as a rental (more and more every day as well). Trade the guy now...

As for his value, the Isles aren't making the playoffs. Do they see Callahan as a piece of the future? Does Vanek fit into future of NYR? If yes on both, why not?

Callahan will end up with less than Brown, unless he signs with a team in a state without an income tax. And even then, probably still would be less. Dustin Brown negotiated his own contract. Add 15% to the value and Brown is really on about 6.6M a season.

Not to mention Staal's market next year is going to be 1.

Yes, everyone saying Staal is definitely going to bolt for Carolina after his contract up are idiots. But that is because there is a very good chance that Staal wants to stay a Ranger. However, if Staal isn't going to stay a Ranger, you can bet there is only one team he'll sign with as a free agent. We'd be in the same position as now with Callahan, with Staal only being a rental and not getting the worth you'd imagine. Every team would be well aware that Staal won't re-sign with them.
