I like the Klein move, fyi.

It's just what the trade signifies because of how much older Klein is than DZ.

But, you also have Moore in the lineup, and Skjei on the way, while you have a need on RD. Plus, Klein is signed for four more years at a pleasant cap hit. So, it not so much a "now trade" as your making it out to be.

He's 29. Del Zotto is 23. Moving a 23 year old (damaged goods or not) for a 29 year old is a now move. I don't mean now as in playoff rental, I mean now as in retain Girardi and Callahan and Boyle and whomever else, then go to war with them for the next 5 years. Rather than get younger and start building for the future.

I think you're giving Sather too much credit.

AV had obvious problems with MDZ - Sather got rid of him for an OK player who is a RD. I don't think he gave much thought to this being an sort of precursor to the long-term look of the roster. He hasn't thought like that in 14 years - why would he start now?

Haha, that's probably true.

And if this was the best deal they could get for MDZ?

I dont think anyone would be offering a top line winger for him.

I didn't say anyone was/would.

It was the best deal, in terms of CURRENT team needs. Again, it wasn't a bad trade for Del Zotto as far as value and fit.

When does the future become now? This team in my opinion had to make this move if they want to compete this year. Now, if Klein is who we think he is, this is a top 3 D in the NHL, with Blues and Blackhawks ahead, with LA and Boston slightly below us.

With this move, it gives us the financial ability to sign at least one of Girardi or Strålman, or maybe even both. On addition, this could help us sign Staal to a long term contract next year, and allow McIlrath to come up.

This defense with Hank at its best should compete to the semifinals, and with some luck, further. But for now, I'll take the steady for 4 years as opposed to the unknown with what was DZ. This team has to win in the next couple of years, with their core players signed for the next five years (Lundqvist, Nash, McD), so they have to gear up for it now.

I just have been reading, and they seem to be close to a contract with Callahan. He originally wanted 6 million but has come down, can anyone confirm this. The recent signing of Klein also supports this, because it's insurance if Giradi walks, but Callahan also played with Klein in the OHL for the Guelph Storm back in 2004 and went to the Memorial Cup Finals.

Also Sather said he has been in contract with both agents. I hope they both get signed soon so people with these speculations and rumors can stop.

And if they resign both and keep the mediocrity going, I could care less about this ****in team going into next year. Keep signing those free agents to try and make this a Cup team.

It's worked so well in the past!

It's worked so well in the past!

You know who we're targeting, Thornton. Has chemistry with Nash and he replaces the outgoing Richards in the middle. The problem is, if we do resign our big UFAs, do we have enough cap room for him?

The Rangers are patching with Klein, who is in the first season of a five-year contract that carries an annual cap hit of $2.9 million. He’s averaging 18:48 of ice per in 47 games this season, much of which he has spent on the third pair, lately with Ryan Ellis.

If there’s an additional byproduct here, it’s the impact it will have on negotiations with impending free agent second-pair right defenseman Anton Stralman, who is averaging 19:34 as Marc Staal’s partner and who could now be expected to seek in the neighborhood of $3.3 million per.

http://nypost.com/2014/01/22/del-zotto-never-developed-into-rangers-building-block/

Of course, one of those right-handed defensemen is Dan Girardi, the looming unrestricted free agent who has been bedrock for the Rangers over the past seven years. With the salary cap set to rise from this season’s $64.3 million to around $71.1 million for next season, the idea that Sather alluded to was that prices for players in high demand – the most highly of those being solid, right-handed defenseman – is going to skyrocket. Also in that group for the Rangers is second-pair right-hander Anton Stralman.

But most notably, the 29-year-old Girardi surely will be looking for a large raise on his current $3.325 million annual cap hit, and if his demands prove to be too pricey before the March 5 trade deadline, there is little question Sather will have a large portion of the league knocking down his door asking for Girardi.

“I think I’ve said this before: We want to resign all of these players, and we’d like to get it done before the season is finished if we can,†said Sather, who also has the task of trying to resign captain Ryan Callahan, a winger. “We’ve had discussions with their agents and hopefully we will get it done. But this does give us a little more insurance on that side, so you have to look to the future as well when you do make these deals.â€

What Sather got in Klein was someone who is not about to replace Girardi, but could at least push Stralman for that top-four role, even when he starts Thursday night’s Garden match against the Blues on the third pair with lefty John Moore.

The Rangers needed closure with Del Zotto. Management wanted a top 4 D. They wanted a right-handed D. They got Klein at an affordable number for the next 4 years. Now management can move on to other players.

yep. Seems to be the D is set. I am going to guess they sign Girardi and let Stralman walk. RD are hard to find a we could see with the DZ deal. Having McD, Girardi, Staal, Klein, Moore and then a battle with McIlrath , Allen, Falk in camp. Skjei should be in the AHL as well next yr no?

G is set with Hank and Cam so the focus is upfront.

I cant really see another big deal. They may get a rental or trade a guy like Boyle and get another body in.

I see them signing Cally as well. It will get done and they will still have enough under the cap for next yr. Richards buyout allows them to pay Girardi and Callahan their raises even with Hank getting extended.

Skjei to the AHL after his junior year. No need to rush him. Just this year he started getting regular minutes.

Since Callahan and Giradi have been on this team they have not been mediocre. Getting to a conference finals, having the most points in the EC, and then getting to the 2nd round of the playoffs is not mediocre. slight tweaks need to be made, not gutting the heart and soul players from this team and starting from sratch. When you are Buffalo or other teams in last place then you gut and have a firesale.

Both Callahan and Giradi have years of their prime left, and the Rangers want to get everything they can from them, because they know what they can do. Callahan has already turned his season around, and is playing like his old self.

it just goes to show how much harder and harder it is to make trades in this league.. teams arent going to gamble or make risky trades..

stralman is as good as gone unless he decides to take a discount..he should be looked as on the block and available as well as G and cally (since slats seems like hes taking calls on them)..

With Klein in the mix now, I think Stralman's future in NY is in doubt. Allen is having a good AHL season and looks to be about NHL ready, McIlrath is close too. I wouldn't mind playing one of them on the bottom pair RD next year.

Like it's been said, I like that Stralman or Girardi can't hold us hostage for not having another RD anymore.
