2-4 weeks with no surgery is a minor shoulder injury. Ask a baseball fan. How major it seems to you may differ.

And not the Russian, the Swede, Viktor Stalberg. Big fan of his as a bargain type of deal that could pay big dividends. A 27 year old that can play anywhere from 1st to 3rd line comfortably as a role player could do well on the cheap here. Chicago has a few other UFA and RFAs to sign and he may get left out of the first round of deals with only $5M in cap space left for next year. $2-2.5M and a 20g/20a guy in a big frame that isn't afraid to hit and has a decent shooting %. Zubrus-like stats for comparison but faster wheels. Him and D'Ags on a line together could do some damage.

Abo - I thought Selanne was 'the guy'...

Stalberg has been one of the guy I have really wanted on this team. He has some great wheels too.

You want to ask a baseball fan about the judgment on the timetable for Kovy's injury? What? You can call it whatever you want, day-to-day; minor; major; treble but he could potentially miss the rest of the regular season minus the final week. For a team that is troubled to score that is a problem.

If the season ended tomorrow would a season ending injury be worse or better? You're defining it by your standards, not a shoulder injury standard. Thank goodness it's minor as shoulders go. You're missing the point.

I see what you're saying. Yes we are lucky that it is a minor shoulder injury. But what is the point in that comment for this year? Our russian stud will be good for the playoffs, if we make it and good next season. Woo...

ya gotta just take the 'minor'-ness of the injury and chalk it up as a good thing. like i do about work on mondays

Malkin has missed 11 out of the last 14 games the past 3 weeks with an injury and they're doing ok. I think we can actually get stronger from this if the team plays smart. It will show the team they can succeed without Kovy and step up with a boost of confidence when he returns - which could be in as little as 7 games or in worst case for the playoffs. We just need the rest of the team healthy to build some stability and chemistry at the same time. Come on Zubrus... and Poni I guess.

If Marty was still out I guess I'd be less optimistic, but with him back in net, anything is possible.

Anyhoo, this discussion belongs in the team news thread. As for trade speculation, if Lou feels it's really more likely a 4+ week injury I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade for a low cost fill-in type. If it's more short term, I think it's all status quo and limp through it.

lol at the notion decreasing a player's icetime by one-two minutes a game is going to drop 25-33% of a guy's entire point production. You disprove your own hypothesis with the last stat, it wasn't minutes that factored in since his PPG in 60 minutes fell down an elevator shaft for two years. You can blame it on playing with 'third-liners' last year, they were putting him with third-liners because his play was meriting it.

And he had 84 points three years ago, not 79. He went from 40-44-84 and +36 to 21-33-54 and +9 in 'more' games played (73 games played in '09/10, 77 in '11/12) over a two year span. I'm sure he wasn't playing with third-liners all the time, or on the PP either.

I said 79+ because he has two seasons with 19 mins one with 79 pts and one with 84 points. His total time on ice dropped because he was playing less PP and less with the team's top line (Backstrom).

YR ----TOI 5on5--LM1------LM2--------LM3
2012 - 1071.50 - Wideman - Johansson - Chimera (54 pts - 11 pp pts)
2011 - 867.78 -- Laich ---- Carlson ----- Alszner (54 pts - 18 pp pts)
2010 - 1035.02 - Laich ---- Backstrom -- Green (84 pts - 27 pp pts)
2009 - 816.92 -- Ovechkin - Backstrom -- Green (79 pts - 30 pp pts)

YR----TOI 5v4
2012--185.47
2011--187.48
2010--225.82
2009--232.05

Just to compare here is Kovy's P/60 for 5on5
2012 - 2.00
2011 - 1.55
2010 - 2.91
2009 - 2.61
2008 - 2.72

We are a team that needs a solid 1st line LW to play with Kovy and Semin is a FA next season. I think it would be a prefect match.

I still find it funny that people bash Semin production on ice the last two seasons when he was a lot more productive than Kovy 5on5 for those two seasons.

He'll also make more than him but continue

There is no way Semin makes more than Kovy. I won't be surprised if Semin would prefer shorter length deals because he will make the most money per year. It is very hard to find a player as good as Semin who isn't overvalued let alone undervalued. I really hope he ends up a Devil.

Thank god Murray's going to the Pens. Wanted absolutely no part of him and you can't ever count Lou out on an old, slow, stay-at-home defenseman who used to have an excellent reputation.

This board just loves Semin! And I really hope he's wrong (per usual). No more D guys.

Now if Fleischmann is heading our way because Kovy is out that would be a pleasant surprise

No regular #Sharks defenceman is on the ice for more shots against (rel. to ice-time) at 5v5 than Douglas Murray.

So basically they got Volchenkov.

Now just imagine the Volchenkov they got is even slower.

I guess there's a chance his game will fit in better in the Eastern Conference, though. He just simply can't keep up in the west.

I wouldn't mind Campbell... he has a few more years left at 7.1 mil but if that means Volchy and Tallinder get the good ol trade or amnesty buyout I'd be all for it.
