I think a fifth is a little bit of hyperbole but not much. Probably the MAX of Tallinder's value is a 3rd at this point. Or maybe a similar-salaried mid-line forward. Hell, with the way he's played the last two games (much better than Volch) I'd almost rather not bother dumping him now anyway.

If it's after the season it wouldn't. It would open up $3.375 to spend on a forward. We need forwards, and Lou will have to get us one this Summer on the UFA market. I'm finally starting to absolutely HATE the Salvador contract like everybody else. I don't think he's awful, but that's too much for a 37 year old stay at home defenseman.

By the way Tallinder hasn't been bad the last two games at all.

I might be pulling the trigger too fast here, but if we knew Loktionov was not departing this year then I'd be comfortable with Josefson going. I like the guy, but Loktionov has impressed me more in 6 games than Josefson ever has. Which also could mean **** since it's only 6 games.

Volch does not get coned every game and he really doesn't take that many penalties. The level of hatred around here is reaching Mottau levels. He's a plus player. Lets not act like he's -20 and falling apart.

Thank you for injecting some sanity back into the discussion. Some people should really just take a couple of years and follow the Blue Jackets or Islanders to get a little perspective.

...Only in New Jersey can a D go 19 games with a +1 rating while taking only 8 total minor penalties and be crucified by the fans.

Volch, zids, and to a certain extent tally aren't nearly as bad as everyone says they are. People need someone to be the whipping boy though.

And let's be honest, the problems the defense has had aren't new. They had the same problems last year, even in the playoffs. They were just able to mask those problems and take the pressure off the defensemen by sustaining offensive pressure with the forecheck. That hasn't happened nearly as much this year and the defense has been exposed because of it.

Tallinder has been pretty damn good the last few games. Salvador is fine, but I'm beginning to agree with the people who didn't like the contract. If anything Andy Greene has looked pretty whatever for the last couple games I think. And no I'm not suggesting sitting him by any means. Just pointing that out.

The real problem is we've got eight D's and they all know that. That's a factor that shouldn't be overlooked. They know one of them is getting traded, and until it happens it will be a cloud hanging over every game.

If we can't get **** for them though I don't mind hanging on, but hopefully we can. In the event we only had 7 defensemen though unfortunately the forwards wou;dn't be too much better. I'd bet Cam Janssen would be the 14th forward. I still never liked the 8 d man thing but it is what it is.

Anyone else think that Tampa Bay would make a good trade partner? They seem to have depth at forward, are already tops in the league in scoring but at the bottom in defense, and are still fighting for a playoff spot. What forwards do they have that might be a good fit?

The thing to hate about the Salvador deal really is that he got that 3rd year which is probably going to present some issues, not necessarily related to being close to the Cap, because we aren't going to be close to the Cap anytime soon or in the future (just realistically speaking), but the fact that you are eating up that amount of money on a guy who's almost 40, was given the C and there's implications in how to deal with that, if he doesn't deserve to be playing (and you realistically could allocate the money he is slated to earn, elsewhere on the team.
