I'd bend a little bit if it means Conerik GTFO next year. Then I wouldn't be as bothered by Zubrus getting more money. If we have to have Tallinder's waste of $3.4 on our books though.

And he's 10x more usefull to his team then Sal ;)

Outside of his miraculous performance he pulled last year in the post season, he's been nothing more then "ok". Paul Stastny was Colorado's #1 pivot when he got his deal and is still utilised in all situations... can't really say the same about Sal.

You said take a player and any contract vs the cap will always look like peanuts.

And Salvador just got the C handed to him from the idiot coach that in his first year took us to the cup finals. I trust his valuation of the player's skills more than HF.

And no Stastny is not 10x more useful. Hyperbole much?

If we took out all the Dmen you think suck we'd be dressing Harrold and calling up Jay Leach and Urbom and then you'd see some real suck and be begging to dress Sal and the others again.

If we didn't have 8 defensemen I don't think many people would want Salvador sat. Of course you'd have a couple people wanting to sit him in favor of Harrold.

Personally I'd still take Salvador over Conerik Tallinder.

I don't think Zubrus will be back next season. Just a feeling.

I think he will be back. We're not going to like the term, and we may or may not like the price, but I think he will be back.

speaking of myers sucking, what do you guys think his value is at this current point in time.

for the record, i ask purely out of curiosity, not in suggestion of having him on the devils.

His value is still high to the Sabres, but low to most other teams. Guys like that don't get traded.

Henrique will probably get more than 2. And I'd be surprised to see no turnover.

It depends what you define as 'no turnover'. I seriously doubt Zidlicky comes back (then again I figured there was no chance Sal came back), or Harrold and some other defenseman has to get moved between now and the end of the season you would think.

Of the four forwards we have that are FA's - including Poni - I'd say individually they're all good bets to come back, but I'm not sure if they all come back. Obviously the Devils want to keep Clarkson-Elias. They've traded for Poni twice so I think they'll want to keep him too. It might come down to him or Zubrus and Poni'll probably be cheaper, though Conte's Zubrus quote points to the Devils wanting him to retire here too.

When you break it down, it's arguable that guys like Larsson, Fayne, Greene deserve to get more tougher assignments, while guys like Salvador, Volchenkov, and Zidlicky have to be utilized differently and perhaps, protected in terms of who they go up against, how much ice time they are subjected to, what types of situations they are used in (PP/PK), and who they need to be paired with in a particular game or situation. How much of it is age or talent, or a combination of both, would take forever to really go into and analyze and even then you might not get a clear cut answer with confidence.

Maybe it's just me, but I think some fans seem to think that with a C on his jersey, Salvador would turn into another Scott Stevens before our very eyes or they simply remember what he did in the playoffs and expected that to be a new normal, despite saying everything to the contrary. Salvador really at this point talent wise is no more than a 3rd pairing defenseman who is being played at borderline 1st/2nd pairing minutes and seeing tough assignments.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really not at all thrilled that Salvador got a 3rd year. It's going to be a sunk cost and we'll probably have to carry it on the cap, unless Salvador can somehow push through seeing what would mostly be limited 3rd pairing minutes. It'll be interesting to see how Deboer and Salvador handle that.

Salvador for the most part has been fine. He's had some rough patches this season for sure, and a few bad games, but hasn't been terrible. He should never be paired with Volchenkov though, those two don't play well together.

Tallinder has been brutal and should never be in the lineup in place of a Fayne.

Volchenkov is fine as long as he is played in his comfort zone.

Larsson needs to play more.

Fayne should never be a scratch.

Zidlicky has his ups and downs, and should maybe be given less power play time so Greene and Larsson get a chance.

I don't understand the idea behind playing Larsson on the PP during his rookie season as an 18 year old, but as a 20 year old wich skills that have clearly made significant progress, he only plays 5 on 5.

Love Pete but he makes some odd decisions (Kovy playing 40 mins a game, Lars not on the PP and barely on the PK, Kovy at RW, sitting Fayne, etc...)

Larsson most definitely hit a rookie wall last season and it showed.

I think what Pete is trying to do is to get him comfortable with regular playing time in a condensed season before upping his minutes. He was thrown to the wolves and suffered in the latter parts of the season because of it.

Also, Larsson's biggest issue last season was getting burned along the walls... perhaps he's trying to assess how well he's fixed that part of his game before putting him on the point of a PP that was notorious for SHG last season.

As the season progresses, I think we'll see more of him on the PP.
But some patience is needed, and I don't fault Pete for using that.

Powerplay is better than it has been in a long time, aside from maybe 2 or 3 off games, so I'm not going to stress about the coach taking his time.

I'm not too bothered by Sal. He sucked early tonight, and got burned by Ovy. It's Ovechkin though.

I think because we have these 8 defensemen it's caused a lot of frustration among fans and criticism of a lot of the guys. If we had 7 I don't think there would be as many complaints with Sal, or Volchenkov, or Zidlicky. There might be some people who want Harrold in over one of them, but that's it. Tallinder has been awful for almost 3/4ths of his time with the Devils.

What forwards do we have knocking on the door? Matteau is already here. Haven't Lou and Pete talked about having more players like Zubrus around in reference to Matteau? Why would he let the real thing go, to let a lesser of him take his place?

XXXX - Zajac - Kovy
Elias - Henrique - Clarkson
Poni - Zubrus - Matteau
Carter - Gionta - Bernier

Get a 20 goal scorer for the first line and that is ****ing solid.

Leafs have a 20 goal scorer in Macarthur that we'll give you for cheap :sarcasm:

I'm beginning to worry that the trade market may not be as great as before and taking time to think about it might be a bad idea.

Teams that lost players are slowly expecting them back, and that is all you need to not pull the trigger, and other teams are getting a warmth of depth dmen. If Lou was hoping to wait and trade closer to the deadline, I think that might not work. Hording 8 dmen is also pretty meh considering we have Fayne scratched.

Am I the only one who absolutely loves Zidlicky? :jump:

No sir, I think he is vastly underappreciated around here. His defensive problems are not THAT bad compared to who we have had back there in recent years and he brings a dynamic we desperately needed on the back end.

For what he does, he's pretty damn good.

Handing over the captaincy to a player that can be healthy scratched from his poor play isn't the best of ideas. If you can tell me that Salvador has been playing solid hockey since day #1, you'd have a point but he isn't, so you don't ;)

Paul Stastny, when he got his deal, was their #1 center and when your a #1 center of any team (see Zajac), you get paid. Salvador got a solid deal for what he brought during the postseason, period, wich know sees us "handcuffed" if he doesn't turn his play around. At least he showed us that he can be a solid d-men during our cup run, so it's not like all hope is gone.

Salvador, Zidlicky, Tallinder and Volchenkov are all having a sub par start to this shorten season and if you think I'm being overboard, for whatever reason, then that's your problem, but I'll say what I see and what I see is nothing special when talking about those players.

There will be very few selllers, and they're going to up the ante. Trades between playoffs contending teams is the most likely scenario.

The problem with Zids is that he doesn't just have have "a bad game," he has an atrocious, humiliating, abortion of a game. He's never just slightly off, when he plays poorly he does so in spectacular fashion. Which is a shame, because when he's not playing poorly he's a very important player and gives us a dimension we haven't had since Rafalski.
