Their primary concern would be making a deep run in the playoffs. They're in win-now mode. They saw what a deadline deal can do in the past (Carter), maybe they would like to try their luck again.
The difference being that Carter was signed through forever at a sweetheart of a deal.

But why would they do an NHL ready prospect for rental who's scoring at the same pace? Makes no sense for them. They'd trade futures.

Of course he wants to remain a Ranger. Not many players want to leave but they do for more term and money. The Rangers and his agent haven't gotten very far in their discussions which is why his name has been discussed in trades with other teams. From: @AGrossRecord

Callahan says he wants to remain a Ranger. Knows there are going to be persistent rumors until his future is settled.

Very pleased that these reports are coming out about the Rangers actively shopping them now. There's only a week of NHL hockey in between the Olympics and the deadline and to be honest if the right deal for Cally comes along over the next 9 days they should pounce on it.

There is essentially 16 NHL roster days until the trade deadline, but 5 weeks for Cally to get injured again (KNOCK ON WOOD). That would be the worst case scenario, to get nothing for him due to a season ending injury at the Olympics.

Not a good way to think. This way of thinking gets organizations in long term binds with bad contracts. You have to look at every year of the contract and way the pro's/cons

I think Girardi will be fine for a few years. I worry about giving a d-man who is a just above average skater a long term deal at 30 though. Normally, the players who age gracefully in the NHL are great skaters.

I think I would be good with this.

Again, what happens if in 5 years when Girardi is a borderline top-4 d-man?

Stralman and Klein are legit top-4 d-men. Neither are top pairing but the Rangers are lucky enough to have (2) top-pairing LD's in McDonagh and Staal.

I think thy should sign one of them. Stralman or Girardi. Prioritize, move the other.

6 million is too much unless he backs down to 5 years, IMO.

I wouldn't want Rundblad, not overly interested. Samuelsson + 1st +

The people asking for NHL players are silly. Practically no rental has returned players like Hanzel or Yandle. Not happening.

If the Rangers don't see Callahan moving on his dollar figure, wouldn't it make more sense to try and build up a bidding war BEFORE the Olympics in case he gets injured?

At that point? Absolutely nothing. You have a defenseman who is almost at the end of his contract with a cap hit that is a much, much smaller % of the total cap than it will be next season. If anything that explains as to why Girardi should be kept.

Its a business. The team will cut ties with the player in a second when the player is old and broken down. Callahan needs to look for himself and his family.

Girardi at 5x5 would be ideal. Rangers want 5 years. Girardi wants Boumeester money.

Dustin Brown should be the cautionary tale for people who want Callahan to resign. Kings gave him 8 years, 5.875m and he's on pace for 25 points this year. I get that both of these players bring more to the table than just points, but neither of them have more than 4-5 years MAX left with the way they play the game. Trade him now while he has a good amount of value before it becomes another "Captain Intangibles" situation.

Except his teams go on deep playoff runs. Mike Richards too has declined in the regular season. The way these guys play, they can't do that for the full 82. But where it counts...

Those guys have some deep playoff runs on their resume. I'll take a $5.8M cap hit over term to ensure that my organization has that.

Id be willing to bend a little bit for Girardi considering hes a sought after commodity being a minute munching Right D. Not to mention Staal's health fragility.

Not Callahan. Im starting to become nervous though. Its like a ticking time bomb with him, all it takes is one shot off the hand....

Rental status decreases the value. Callahan as a UFA may be worth a player like Versteeg signed for a few more seasons.
I'm not sure Kris Versteeg is a downgrade for the Rangers' situation. He's just as good an even strength producer as Callahan, and Callahan's PP role has evaporated.

What else was Cally going to say?

He could've blinked "save me" in Morse code.

Callahan is Mr. bland platitude. I don't know why anyone would expect him to give anything other than the expected answer. (Not an indictment on him as a player)

For those of you clamoring for Toffolli... He isn't an up tempo skater at all.. he just fits the "Neanderthal" LA system very well. Excellent on the boards, and a great passer, but he isn't built for up tempo system at all.

It was his skating ability that pushed him into the 2nd round. The Kings are a lumbering team that dominate you along the boards, not a speed team at all. Toffoli makes no sense.

Looking at it... trading Callahan and buying out Richards should give us the cap space in the offseason to go hard after a guy like Vanek. Or if we want to be more reserved, Cammalleri or Moulson. I don't see us targeting a top-6 RW.

What do we do for center depth? That would put Brassard as our #2C and that is something I am still not close to comfortable with. Vanek would be great but he won't do us much good without better C depth.

What you say about Cally is true, but I don't think any player worthy of the label "professional" says anything else.

In this situation, probably not. Even something like "I just wish it would get done" hurts your agents leverage.

Rental status decreases the value. Callahan as a UFA may be worth a player like Versteeg signed for a few more seasons.

But a team in Florida's position wouldn't trade for Callahan unless they have a contract worked out with him just prior to the trade, in which case the Rangers would be able to get more value than Versteeg. I see what you mean though.

Personally, I don't have a ton of problem with Brassard at 2nd line C. He's a streaky player, but that's what 2nd line players are. I also happen to think that Miller and Lindberg will both make solid contributions to the team next season.

I'm more comfortable with Brassard being a 2C than I am with bringing in Stastny and maintaining the status quo on our center corps' skating ability.

Say the Rangers re-sign Girardi,is Stralman in play? Katie Strang reported a few weeks that no talks had taken place between the Rangers and Stralman's agent. That guy has a million kids. I was the NHL Network on Saturday. The families were on the ice. He has 4 little kids. What is it with the Swedes and their kids? Nylander had 6 or 7 of them when he played for the Rangers in 2007. One of them will be a very good NHL player. The Rangers and his agent Paul Theofanous agreed to a 3 year contract. It was for $3.75M per. I think. Nylander said no and fired his agent. Nylander wanted big $ and Sather said no.

I guess I am too.

But I still think both are pretty cruddy options.

He made 12 million dollars over the last three years, and is about to sign a contract somewhere that will undoubtedly be more than that. I think he and his family will be alright no matter where he signs.
