Berglund is a guy who I would buy low on. Had a very good season before Hitch took over and took the team back to defensive fundamentals. I think he still has the ability to be the big 2nd line center a lot of teams covet. He's getting limited offensive minutes as of late.

If I was sending Callahan their way though, that would have to be a pretty nice "+" coming back with him. Also, I think St. Louis has little need for another gritty winger. They need an upgrade at center, and aside from Stepan, we don't have one to give them.

Joe Thornton just makes too much sense.

Not necessarily good sense either. Just from a Sather perspective.

I know right?

I would rather go 7 years @ $7.5 million for Phaneuf than 6 years at $5.5 million for Girardi. Even if Phaneuf is a statue by the end of the deal, he can still blast one-timers.

I think that for the money, Phaneuf would be the better investment. He still moves the puck well.

More free agency? Please stop. There hasn't been enough damage done to this franchise because of bad free agent contracts. Lets go get some more. That's the Yankee philosophy. They look at the free agent market to figure out who will be playing on their team next season. No real plan.

I agree on Berglund. 50 point big center.

I was just trying to think of a way to get him via trading a UFA like rental.

Bored at work:

Trade MDZ + Brassard for Yakupov + prospect/pick

Trade Callahan at the deadline to STL for Berglund +

Trade Girardi to TB at the deadline for picks/prospects

Trade Zuccarello to somewhere for picks/prospects

Trade Boyle to Montreal for a 2nd '14

Re-sign:

Stralman
4 year @ 3.2 million

Moore
1 year @ 1 million

Berglund (after he is acquired)
2 years @ 3.25 million

Sign:
Phaneuf
7 years @ 7.5 million

Bollig
2 years @ 1 million

Cammalleri
4 years @ 5.25 million

Are you serious?
He commands much more. Let's not overpay, but hey----

How would you suggest replacing Girardi, Callahan and Richards?

I didn't want to say it out of pure frustration but I could absolutely see the Rangers making a run at Thornton.

That's assuming Thornton even makes it to the free agent market.

Jeff Gorton was part of the management team in Boston which determined they would never win anything with Thornton as their top guy so they shipped him out to SJ in the middle of the night. MOC and Gorton wanted to build the team around Patrice Bergeron.

So basically just churn the roster and ice a similar team?

Kreider-Grabovski-Nash
Hagelin-Stepan-Vrbata
Zuccarello-Miller-Callahan

as the top 9

Staal-McDonagh
Stralman-Phaneuf
McIlrath-Moore
Falk

Not so much. Adding Vrbata and Grabovski to the top 6 makes us much more potent there from the current squad. Out top 9 is still Charmin soft though; we would need a seriously bruising 4th line that gets 10-12 min a game to compensate

Good points.

I hope he wasn't the one who thought Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau was an acceptable return.

I'd advocate keeping Dorsett for the 4th line. Guy is good for 10 goals a game and plenty of scraps

Don't sell yourself short. Derek Dorsett should be pencilled in on our top line. Having Dorsett, Nash, Zucc and Callahan as our RW's makes us the best in the league at that position. And it allows Cally to play his natural position at 4RW on 5v5 plus PP and PK.

Goal Scoring? 10 goals a game.
Toughness? Plenty of scraps.

I'm glad Glen got Dorsett in the Gaborik trade. I can't wait for him to get back and lead our offense to victory. Think modern day Eric Lindros in his prime, multiply his skill and grit, and then add some.:sarcasm:

While i agree with this somewhat, comparing the Yankees FA signings to the Rangers is completely ridiculous.

1) The Yankees actually win with many of thos FA's.
2) There is no salary cap in baseball.
3) Baseball is highly relative to individual play over chemistry

What are they going to do, never sign FAs? You have to sign FAs sometimes, unfortunately. Especially with how Sather runs this team. So really you can only hope he signs the right FAs for the job.

gotta make better free agent decisions.

i think this year we actually did a pretty good job in terms of not going crazy in free agency...though we didnt really address our needs.

rangers arent going to firesale because with Henrik back there, its pretty impossible to be terrible enough to get a #1 pick.

The Yankees won once in 2009 playing the free agent game. Their late 1990s teams weren't built on free agents. The 2009 team was. There are many first round exits between 2002-2012. Missed the playoffs in 2008 and 2013.

Baseball has a luxury tax system and the Steinbrenners are cognizant of the luxury tax threshold.
