If there were one thing in the history of hockey I could take back it would be the Kings winning that Cup. Forever the benchmark comparison.

Yeah, that really solidified the "anything can happen!" mentality in a lot of people's minds. Including our GM's one would have to think.

He wasn't the hottest commodity that deadline. He had an attitude problem. No hustle. That was around the time that it was starting to leak that him and Richards were huge partiers. Bad image. Philadelphia wanted to separate the 2 to send a message. Carter didn't respond the way they wanted. That decreased his trade value.

That's true. He was also coming off seasons of 36, 33, 46 and 29 goals with a very reasonable cap hit for years to come.

Guys like that exist around the league. By the deadline, more should become available.

Please offer some names of players like that who will be available. Reasonably priced players who have averaged 34 goals the four seasons before he was dealt and are under 28.

It's a shame that arguably the best landing spot for MDZ (Isles) and two players that'd fit this team perfectly (Schenn and Letang) would never even get past stage 1 in a deal because they are in-division teams.

Letang would be a flop here. The thought was that after Gonchar left, Letang would be the PP QB for the Pens and they'd sail off into the sunset. Unfortunately, despite his physical gifts, Letang has the on-ice vision of Brian Boyle. He has a great shot, is a flashy dangler with the puck, and skates very well, but he can't be the QB on the PP. He's made a lot of money mooching off of Crosby and Malkin, IMO. If you ask me, the Maatta will be the true stud on that blue line in a few years.

Schenn, on the other hand, I would welcome with open arms. Exactly the kind of player this team should be targeting.

So true. Except all you have to do is take it one step further and realize that was a very good/deep team personnel wise that truly was underachieving before the coaching change.

Unless he REALLY wants to give the Rangers a discount because he loves them so much, I just can't see Callahan taking anything under 5 per when significantly worse UFA's than him have gotten big money from teams in recent years.

Then again what if you take into account these:

1) Cost of moving. House/Apartment. Subtract that from the raise in salary he gets. Whole family needs to move. Can you put a price on picking up and moving in a 2 month span? For his family, is his wife willing to move to a place she might not know anyone? What if the places are unideal for his children growing up/schooling. Would he be willing to leave but let his family stay in NY where they may be comfortable? He's also really close to his parents. NYC is a manageable destination from Rochester. Other places aren't as accessible.
2) Endorsement deals. He has every opportunity in NYC. His jersey seems to be consistently amongst the top sellers every month. I'm sure it's in his current contract that a part of every jersey sold with his name on it will go to his personal savings. It'll be harder to have that same exposure on another team.

I can only really think of the Sabres being a viable option for him to go to. Rochester and Buffalo aren't that far away. Not a big adjustment for his family. They'll have a lot of cap space, they could offer a lot. They'll need a captain after Ott is traded.

But it's not inconceivable that he takes less money, in base salary, to stay with the Rangers.

Aside from the fact that they had the right blend of grit and talent, the Kings group that won the Cup had a lot of former champions and players who had been to the finals. They got hot at the right time and were able to draw upon their playoff experience. Justin Williams, Dustin Penner, Rob Scuderi, and Colin Fraser all played for Cup-winning teams. Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Simon Gagne, Jarret Stoll, and Matt Greene played with teams that previously reached the finals.

The Rangers have only one player, Brad Richards, that has won a Cup or appeared in the finals. But don't worry, I'm sure all those former Columbus players will help...

Perhaps. Then again, you have examples like Shane Doan who choose to stay where they are for less money.

I think there's a chance that he could take a discount. Doesn't mean he will. The chance is there though. I don't know why everyone is under the impression that he absolutely will milk the Rangers for more money.

I think they are woefully mis-constructed, don't know the type of game they should be playing, and are pretty close to the .500 team they showed thus far. I certainly don't get the vibe that they are massively underachieving, which some people will always have.

this is why when you make changes the management should try to trade for talent from a winning atmosphere.. i wish Ladd got traded to NYR when he was on the Hawks.. im sure the Rangers could have topped that Visnevsky and 2ed round trade

I guess so. I interned in NYC over the summer. From L.I. The additional city taxes sucked although i should see most of those back (Right?!). Guess the full time labor force doesn't have the same advantages as a college student come tax return season. Point is valid. I don't have a counter to it.

How can they not? It has their name on the back. I would think there is some relevance to why individual jersey sales are mentioned so frequently. I would find it hard to believe an agent wouldn't fight hard for some percentage of those sales.

I think with the talent that they have, and the success that they've had with this same group of guys, .500 is an under achievement. Stanley Cup may be overachievement but .500 seems to me, to be an underachievement, especially when they've proved they can play better.

Katie I KNOW this will never happen as the Chairman won't allow it, but if the Rangers were to effectively punt this year by dealing guys like Staal, Girardi, etc they could really set them selves up with some nice assets around a strong core of players (Nash, Stepan, Mac, Kreider, Zucc, Hags).

Realistically, I'm not sure I see them being able to keep both anyway. Staal has one year remaining after this one and who knows how alluring he may find the idea of playing with his brothers in Carolina. Dan Girardi has not had a banner year, but it's still reasonable for him to expect a significant payday when his deal expires at the end of this season. He's still relatively young but man has he put some hard miles on over the past few season. Rangers might feel his best years are behind him. Then again, right-handed defensemen are a need for the team right now. So, to answer your question: I think the Rangers might have to consider parting with one, and better to not let them walk away for nothing

That is a long time from now. Can we get a couple games over .500 and actually be in the race in the east before buying at the deadline?

I get the 11 wins since the poor start, but it has been 18 games since the 3-7 start. 11-7 is solid. Project that over the remaining season, removing the start, and it goes to 96 points. The last 18 is a better indicator than the first 10. That is a 7 or 8 seed. Is 1 scorer going to make them a top seed in the east? Does it make them on pat with Boston? Even with the Pens and Caps? Better than Detroit, Toronto, Montreal?

Do not chance the future of this team for this season. That is all I ask.

I agree with this. Staal is a shell of himself right now. Girardi is at the point of high risk, low reward contract. Unless it is a similar cap hit to Ericsson from Detroit, I do not do it. 4 years at most for G. Should trade him. McIlrath is almost ready for NHL minutes. Mcdonagh, Del Zotto, Moore down the left side. Girardi could net a younger RHD as well. Stralman, McIlrath, RHD/Falk. Staal could return a couple pieces as well, maybe a RHD for LHD swap. If it has to be Carolina, Staal for Faulk? Maybe a piece on either side?
