I proposed in the last thread:

MDZ
2 AHL scrubs (for contract # balance)

for

Michalek (50% retained)
Gryba
Puempel/Ceci/Lazar

and it seemed pretty well received.

People on this board act like Michalek has no value, but the dude adds LW depth and can actually bury the puck. Yeah, he's a walking injury, but he would essentially be a rental for this season.

Gryba adds a bottom pairing RHD who's still RFA after this season.

One of Puempel/Lazar/Ceci would help us at a position of weak organizational depth. I would personally prefer Ceci.

Michalek is not THAT good and he is a UFA at years end. Why? Puempel hasn;t been that good and is at least a couple of years away if he makes it.

id like to get Zib and Michalek outta ottawa...would probably be too expensive asset wise.

Michalek, while injury prone and having a tough year, would be a heck of an upgrade on the LW.

Rangers would have to send a bit more cap money their way to make it work financially...

something like Pouliot MDZ Bourque and a 2nd
for
Michalek Zib and a 3rd

bring up Mcilrath to play the #6 spot.

Michalek - Richards - Nash
Kreider - Stepan - MZA
Hagelin - Brassard - Zibanejad
Boyle - Moore - Dorsett
Pyatt as your spare

What happened to Callahan?

And someone mentioned it but I'd like Lane MacDermid. He can skate and bang bodies. Play him with Boyle and Dorsett and he'll be effective.

I said one of Puempel/Lazar/Ceci. I would leave up to management who they like the best. Puempel is probably the least valuable of the 3, but he projects as a LW sniper if he makes it. Ceci is the RHD that we need, and Lazar is Lucic-lite at C.

And Michalek is an upgrade on any LW we have bar Kreider. Yeah, he's a rental, I get that.

I think he makes a hell of a lot more sense as the 4th line LWer than Pouliot who is close to useless.

Absolutely. Can't just throw players in the bottom 6 and tell them "go play guys". Need defined roles.

MacDermid is a good skater, though his acceleration could be better. He crashes the net and will chirp. Fights guys bigger than him frequently, remember when he pummeled Rupp in 2012 as a member of the B's?

He could be a Shawn Thornton for this team. He's eh on his own, but with a good center and winger he'll be able to put some points up.

I'd like if we claimed him

I think you are a bit enamored with the name.

Michalek as 12 points in 21 games

Kreider has 11 in 14

Hagelin has 8 in 11

Is he really that much of an upgrade?

id love if Rangers can claim him.. what pick would that be?? i hope he does not get claimed by Senators, Habs (need size) Islanders

Senators have Kassian and Gryba, Habs have Parros, Prust and Moen and the Islanders have Carkner, Boulton and Martin. I doubt they would be the teams to grab him.

Considering we have no depth behind those guys, yes, he is a big upgrade. Michalek is a 25-25 type player when healthy. Considering he would essentially be a rental/throw-in in the trade I proposed, what is the possible downside?

I think he would be an upgrade to the left wing top-9, but not on those guys.

He walks and the Rangers lose a top-4 23 year old d-man for a rental.

If they move MDZ, they need to get a player back who can help now and grow with the team. Same player. Coyle. Connolly. Zibanejad. Chiasson. That type of player.

Michalek was not the main piece in the deal. You also get Gryba, a RHD for the bottom pair, who is also RFA after this season, and a nice piece for the future in Ceci/Lazar/Puempel.

I get wanting a player like Zibanejad back in the deal, but teams don't give up those types of players for a scratched MDZ, even if it is fair value.

They do. Neal. Stewart. JVR. That is the price for a young top-4 d-man.

Quantity =/= Quality.

I do not know what type of contract MDZ will get next, but I'd think it's possible he could be considered a rental as well.

He's going to be an arbitration eligible RFA, he has the stats to get a good award should it go to arbitration, so he is not going to sign on the cheap because there is no reason for him to.

So it's possible if he is moved, the team who acquires him does not qualify him or walks away from the award thus making him a rental as well.

Same for the Rangers, he may not be back even if he is not traded if they can not get him to take less than he will likely be awarded through arbitration.

There is no way the team acquiring the 23 year old puck mover would just let him walk if he asks for too much money. They will have a general idea of what he is worth before dealing for him.

If the Rangers traded for a MDZ-like player, would they walk away from a RFA? 99.9% no.

Well if they were trading away a rental and thought they would have a better chance at re-signing MDZ, only to find he wants 5M per, he takes them to arbitration and gets awarded 4M plus, then they very well may not resign him I'd think.

To ask it this way, say the Rangers and him can not come to terms, and it goes to arbitration and he does get awarded 4M plus, do the Rangers walk away? If so and I do not think that scenario is totally out of whack, shouldn't Del Zotto sort of be a rental as far as the Rangers are concerned as well when they are thinking about moving him?

And not just MDZ , Brassard is in a similar situation.

If a player is rewarded over $1.5 mill in arbitration the team can't turn it down, and can't trade him until after the first year of his new contract, IIRC

Are you moving D. Moore up to the 3rd line? I don't think there's room there.
