1. We have to see where NYR are come deadline time before talking seriously about a contract expiring player.

2. We need to lock up our own expiring players first. And there are a lot of them.

3. I doubt it would be Gaborik considering how we ran him out. Also, Columbus wouldn't want to look like they took a loss by inevitably trading him back for less than they gave.

They need to figure out what the heck they're doing with Del Zotto and Girardi, in particular.

Im going to be royally pissed if this team is clawing for a playoff spot again and we hang onto those 2 guys while taking on rentals.

Gaborik? There is a reason why Columbus won't re-sign him. The Rangers enagaged Columbus on trade talks for Gaborik on the night before the deadline. I heard JD discussing it on Jeff Marek's podcast. The Rangers called on Tuesday night about Gaborik. They discussed players. The talks were done on Wednesday morning. The Rangers wanted to get rid of Gaborik and found a taker in Columbus. There didn't seem to be much of a market for him until Columbus stepped up and the Rangers said sold. His playoff history is spotty. The Rangers sold at that the right time. He wasn't the same player last season and its continued this season.

At the same time, how much is a team going to give up for a UFA to be that they know they won't re-sign.

And I think it was pretty clear that Gaborik and Tortorella clashed. Tortorella isn't here anymore. I think Gabo would consider it.

It's a possibility that's all I'm saying. And I don't think our UFAs affect how we manage come deadline time if we are in a playoff spot and looking to add. Still going to need to re-sign them after the season regardless unless some here believe we are dealing Callahan, Lundqvist, or Girardi.

You like living in the past?

It's a UFA rental RB, relax. I'm not advocating picking up a recently signed Drury/Gomez to a 5-7 year contract with a bad cap hit.

There will be others out there. Gaborik still has the talent. And to be honest with you I don't see much of a quality "playmaker" on that Columbus roster. I see a lot of grind it out, rough and tumble, type of forwards. Umberger, Foligno, Dubibsky. Who is passing him the puck? No Stepan, no Richards, no Zucc even.

In terms of rentals, I think NYR are more likely to look at a younger goal scorer like Cammalleri or Moulson at the deadline.

Heatley, Gaborik, Jagr may move, but I doubt it would be to the Rangers.

I'd be ok with Cammalleri. I think Jagr would be a good addition IF he could keep up for a whole season. Big NO to Heatley.

Gaborik will be 32. Rentals. There is no future in him. Brooks wrote the Rangers are not looking at rentals or veteran players. No three for ones either. The Rangers really need to stop throwing away assets for rentals on a team which isn't a legit Cup contender. Clowe was a disaster last season. Where is Gaborik playing? The same problem exists. He plays the right side.

The Clowe trade was a disaster and should've never happened.

Gaborik plays RW and Nash moves to LW which should've happened last year.

Pouliot for a draft pick
Pyatt for a draft pick

Flip those two picks plus one of our own and a prospect or two for a UFA rental...Gaborik.

We've seen this act before. If the Rangers are anywhere near the playoff hunt, the "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!" mentality will kick in. Being sellers or standing pat become impossible options for no good reason.

Better asset management will come if we had management in place that could be honest about whether their team is a contender or pretender.

What this team needs is a 3rd line winger. Simple. Can be rental if cheap trade value. Guys like Ott would be a pipe dream and cost too much. Look for a move for a player like Lee Stempniak at the time he was traded to Phoenix. Low Draft selections. Low end prospect.

There lies the issue. A 4th line of Boyle, Moore and Dorsett should be a goal before the deadline. Pouliot has a couple months to put himself into the 3rd line role or he is gone. Internally, so does Miller. Beyond that not much.

Outside chance another pack member does that. Fast possibly, but looked overwhelmed here. Kristo is top 6 or AHL. Similar to Kreider. He should be vying for that top 6 in training camp.

Yeah the team is solidifying itself. Guys are finding their roles, but there are still some holes to address. Thankfully they lie on the bottom lines so the cost for addressing those needs aren't going to be at a premium.

Personally I want Pouliot and Moore gone. The less soft in the line up the better, hockey is a sport of physical maturity, and you need big boys to play those big boy minutes.

The team is two spots away from being a contender in the east in my eyes, and that is that third line LW, and 4th line C. Addressing toughness with a guy that can play would be ideal for the 4th line.

I would absolutely overpay to add Zenon Konopka and his 65% F/O and grit on that 4th line. Plays about 8 min a night, will handle things for the team. Is 32, not going to have many shots at the cup. Solid teammate. Has about 3" and 30 lbs on Dorsett, giving the Rangers a legit response out there that can play a valuable role. Someone go get the face-off monster on this team.

I can live with only one of Moore/Pyatt/Pouliot out there per game, especially if there is no improvement or upgrade on Brassard.

I don't think there ever is a year where it's clear as to the intentions of this organization or rather how management really sees this team. Playoff visits for Dolan means more money from ticket sales and merchandise.

Or you get someone to play in the top 6 to push someone else down. Zuccarello.
I have no desire to bring Gaborik back. He's really not the same player anymore.
He was a 40 goal scorer two years ago and had a torn labrum during the 11-12 playoff run. I stronly believe he was misused during last year, being moved to LW for the first time in his career even though there was another winger capable of moving to LW (Nash). Also a shortened season in which at the end of Tortorella's tenure Gaborik through twitter made it clear there was a problem between him and Torts. He joins an offensively inept Columbus team. A lot of hopes, dreams, and luck expected their, BUT no true playmakers. As I said before, grind it out physical forwards such as Umberger, Foligno, and Dubinsky. Horton still hurt and still not exactly a "playmaker." Anisimov? Every other week has good passing ability. Johansen? Still waiting for him to break out. Gaborik is not a puck retrieving player. He needs players to get the puck to him. I don't believe his career is over. The difference between him and Heatley is Heatley in his prime was not a very good skater, and he only got slower. Gaborik can still skate, though not as quick as in the past. He still has the hands. Needs a playmaker.

I disagree about Dom Moore. I think his F/O % will improve from 51% when he comes back. I think he has some snarl to his game. He gets involved physically. He is a smart player and offers a very solid defensive game while chipping in points here and there. I'd rather have him than konopka.

What picks are you getting for Pouliot and Pyatt? Seriously. Gaborik has a $7.5M cap hit. Those two guys add up to $2.85M. Where is the other $4.65M coming from? The Rangers don't have much cap space available with a $64.3M cap right now.
