The way people talk about Yakupov is the same way they used to talk about Zherdev. Let's go get a North American kid. Someone who isn't going to bolt to the KHL when things go bad like Burmistrov did. He went to the KHL. No thanks.

Europe is - in dire contrast to some peoples opinion - hardly made up of only (previously Communist) Russia. Why draw all Europeans over one curtain here and say "Let´s go North American" when we need to get a player to fill a need. Zinbad in Ottawa would fill our needs better than most. If you ask me - the "lets go NA chant" sounds like ignorant NA bigotry.

The talk about Yakupov's two way play is ridiculous. He's TWENTY years old. Not every first overall pick is Crosby and a great two way player out of the box. Toews is widely regarded as one of the best two way guys in the game now. It took him 3-4 years after he was drafted to get there. Shame on all of the xenophobes that are already giving Yakupov the "lazy, Russian, can't find the defensive zone without a map" label. He seems very driven and will make any team that may trade for him very happy.

I knew you would have an issue with that statement. Last time, you wrote a 20 page response. I was talking about the Russian kid. Yakupov seems to be the flavor of day on this board. That's all most people focus on. The guy who needs to learn how to play without the puck. JT Miller was sat last night because of defensive mistakes. Eakins sat Yakupov because he is clueless without the puck. Is that someone you want to build the team around? Edmonton will want a lot for his player. When he was in junior,I heard McKenzie say scouts questioned his play without the puck and compete level. Is Yakupov going to turn the switch on and just become a better player without the puck who also competes harder?

Last time Sather traded his best asset in Tyutin for a player who was walked away from in salary arbitration after one season. Tyutin may be Russian but his wife is Canadian. His home is in North America. Canada. US. Where is Zherdev these days?

Yakupov after he was scratched

“I’m going to play my game,” he said. “I’m not going to change but maybe play better without the puck, or forecheck more, but I love playing with the puck. I really don’t like skating all the time, and forechecking, and hitting somebody every shift. I don’t think it’s my game.”

You want that on the team?

You want to deal with the KHL nonsense?

Igor Larionov is the agent. His daughter Alyonka threw a hissy fit on twitter when a Philly writer called Yakupov a head case.

ESPN’s Craig Custance got Yakupov’s agent, Professor Igor Larionov, to shoot down any KHL option for Yakupov. “Not even a single thought to go to the KHL at this moment. Not even a single one,” he said.

You know. “At this moment.”

His father talked about the KHL.

These issues existed before he was drafted. Two years later. Still there.

For all of your smart posts this one leaves me scratching my head. There's other options than Russia and North America.

Yeah like Drury, Redden or Gomez. These guys are all in it to win.

The problem with North American kids is that you must get them before they sign a contract, because after that they just won't play for you.

The issue of being a lazy Russian that's a liability in their own end? I remember his pre-draft scouting report way differently. From what I remember, he was touted as an aggressive player with high end offensive ability. Compete level was not a problem. Not great in his own zone, but far from a liability.

The risk that he'll bolt to the KHL is there. We're not getting a guy to improve our team that won't cost a fortune that's without any faults. Everybody has a risk. Out of all of the options presented here, I'd rather roll the dice on the twenty year old kid and see if he can put it together.

According to McKenzie, the Oilers best players aren't available.

What's Eklund saying?

Everyone know that McKenzie is a clown that can't be trusted.

You seriously think EDM ever will contend without making the adjustments Qubeck/Colorado did? They are not even remotely close. First they must start to challenge for a PO spot. Probably fail once when coming close. Then they must make the PO's, learn that. And then fail in the PO's, nobody wins it instantly without failing first.

Its a looong way to go. They need high quality D's and probably a better goalie. They need size on the wings. They will definitely need to start moving better players.

Is it easy to do on the market today? At the deadline? Next summer? Now, in today's climate its extremely hard to pull of these trades. It could take some time. But they will not build a blueline without moving value, and they will probably not even compete for a PO spot without a blueline. Its common sense, no matter what McKenzie is saying.

With the unfortunate passing of Cherepanov and the hair brained reasoning behind drafting dud defenseman
The rangers need a sure thing not a high risk kid who is already fallen out of favor with his team

The more I hear about Yak the more he is starting to sound like Zherdev. We've already traded out 1 top 4 D-man for an over-hyped, under-delivering winger, let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

I'd make that tyutin for zherdev trade every day.

We know that, but that is of course true for McKinnon and Drouin too. Just as it is for Miller. I remember Joe T being sat quite often. Joe T said that Ray Bourque almost killed his confidence his first year in Boston. Joe T tried to stickhandle or make plays, Ray B just skated in took the puck and bounced Joey T to the ice.

Thorntons second year wasn't very impressive either. Alot of good minutes on a decent team, put up Zucc numbers.

My point is just, I think its a bit ridiculous to compare Yakubov to Zherdev. Its like comparing Evander Kane to Pouliot. Or Duchene with Daigle. They are diffrent players.

Please note that I am not at all saying that Yakubov is risk free. He could bolt to the KHL, he would take special threatment in contract negotiations etc etc etc.

People have been talking for years about how the Rangers need a high end, elite, young talent on the team. Yakupov was the first overall pick in 2012 and has played only 61 games in the NHL. I don't doubt that there are concerns, but if you can get a guy like Yakupov for, say, Del Zotto and Miller, that is a risk you absolutely need to take.

That's why we're suffering. One of the reasons anyway...

Tyutin - Zherdev

Korpkoski - Lisin

Rosival - Wolski

The other team gets a player that sticks...

We get shafted

If the Oilers were scouting the Ducks, they weren't asking Messier for his views on Fredrick Andersson...

Personally I have zero to little interest in Yakupov.

I think he could turn out to be more like Semin if he does make a career here, but I don't like the risks involved.

I also believe the scouts were probably looking at Andersen as much as DZ/Girardi, or whatever.

That's some trip for the brass to make from Edmonton to NY just to see a player they could watch play in their own building or even closer to their own time zone.

The Zherdev trade was a steal for the Rangers. The kid was worth every penny of the Arb. Award he got.

Torts knew that he was not going to conform to a shot blocking robot and didn't want him on the team.

Zherdev was a player that needed to be coached by someone that could bring out the best from him. Torts was not that guy.

Super talented player and while no defensive wiz, was one of only three players that season for the Rangers that played a full season that was a + and he was 2nd behind Callahan's +7 with a +6

Guys like Zherdev can be very productive NHL'ers even if they are suspect defensively.

NOW, he still may have become the lazy pos that he eventually became after the whole contract issue, but during his time here in NY was one of, if not THE teams best player.

You add a Zherdev type of talent to thsi Rangers team and he provides an element we do not have.

With a defence that consists of Staal, McD, Girardi, Moore, Stralman and MDZ, moving one of those guys for a Zherdev type talent would be alot more beneficial than detrimental.

Maybe they are checking out the northeast teams while the Oilers play in Florida this week before meeting up with the Oilers in Philly on Saturday. See if they pop up anywhere tonight, like Washington or Boston.

I had and have no problem with that Zherdev trade. He led us in goal scoring that year. Is Tyutin really the one that "got away"? I don't think so. If he didn't want crazy money, he would have continued to be a Ranger.

We have the benefit of hindsight here, but I agree. In every case we were weakened by the trade.

I understand the want for players to want to improve, but Kovalchuk and Ovechkin are not, nor will they ever be good defensive players. Let them play.

These types of players come from everywhere in the world. Michael Ryder is horrid defensively. Briere. Kane. All bad defensively.

Teams need a mix of players. Yakupov would be a HUGE boost to this team moving forward.

Exactly. The Rangers really don't have many options. They refuse to tank to acquire such talent. If you're going to do that, you have to make trades. Trading for established players means giving up a lot of assets. If they're even available. If they are, there's a reason.

Beggars can't be choosers.
