"Putting him in a position to succeed" requires giving him minutes over players that are actually committing to the coach's message of playing a complete game, which is necessary at the NHL level.

More importantly, its tough to "work on his flaws as a player," when Yakupov has publicly stated that he has no intention of putting in the necessary work.

Coming from a poorly translated Russian article. The absolute Bible on the subject, that's for sure.

Bure made a career of floating and scoring 50+ goals per year on a regular basis. When Yakupov proves he can score at that level, he'll get a pass.

Gaborik, Ryder, Jagr, Kovalchuk, Briere, Kovalev.

Just off the top of my head

Jagr is not a floater. I wouldn't consider Ryder an impact player in the way of the rest of those guys. Gaborik is wrongly accused in most cases imo. Briere is not really a floater. He's small and soft. Kovalchuk is a good one.

I think my definition of floater is a bit more strict.

What date does Vigneault have in mind regarding the personnel decisions? He is still trying to figure out what he has, doesn't have and if there is anything better available in a trade or in the AHL. Vigneault has been discussing the personnel with the front office and Gernander in Hartford. 27 games will have been played by December 1. Is that enough time? He spent most of the preseason looking at the personnel.

If history is any indication, Sather will first try to placate Vigneault with some more half-assed moves, the team won't improve much, and then the cross-hairs will be on AV.

How can he if he doesn't get to play?

Jagr was an extreme floater for most of his career. Ryder is a 3 time 30 goal scorer. Not exactly a great player but that is still impressive.

The opportunity to get a 1st overall pick in his 2nd season via trade does not happen very often. I understand trepidation about his play, but this is an exciting possibility for this franchise.

Its not just trepidation about his play. Every 20 year old player has flaws.

Its trepidation about his attitude and unwillingness to adapt to the NHL game.

Agreed. We should move defense which is a surplus.

We don't need any punks who float and speak broken english.

edmonton as a team is a hot mess right now.

the kids all play a ton but have little discipline. they are a go-go team only.

defensively they lack leadership and stability. they dont need flash and they dont need offense from the blue line. they need defensive zone coverage, a vet leader, a guy who can stabilize that team.

enter dan girardi with his side kick dylan mcilrath.

a guy like nail yakupov is/might be available. hes a difference maker. hes young, immature and in a funk right now. we know that. hes also a down right scary player on the powerplay and can make things happen on his own. hes a very serious player. hes exactly what we would LOVE TO BE ABLE TO DRAFT.

if we had the first overall pick and he was available, we would have drafted him. and yes, hes russian.

WE DONT NEED HIM FOR HIS DEFENSIVE PLAY !!!!!! ARGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

dont we have enough defensively responsible players already ? let him freekin float. let him be who he is.

do it !!

Some thoughts on Yakupov. I am going to attempt to put a positive spin on the no defense/forechecking quote.

When I first saw Yakupov highlights I really thought he played like a mini Ovechkin at times, powerful and a little reckless. However Yakupov lacks Ovechkin's size. Maybe Yakupov realized he can't play at that same tempo at the NHL level without breaking down. A lot of guys say they base their game on Ovechkin, but how many of them are 6'3" 230lb Russian machines? Yakupov still has his finishing ability but I feel he is adjusting to the NHL a bit too. Maybe he feels he won't be as an effective a scorer if he is spending his energy like he did in juniors.

Well, we can't send Del Zotto the other way because we need a floater to take advantage of his stretch passes :sarcasm:

But seriously, I was under the impression Yakupov to the Rangers was just speculation by Brooks then mega-speculation by some guy in Edmonton who used Brooks as his source. Does this actually have legs or is this just the most speculation since Bobby Ryan? or maybe that one had legs too, I can't remember

Pretty much all speculation based off of:

1.) Yakupov's status in Edmonton right now

And

2.) The entirety of Edmonton's management being at MSG Monday.

Sarcasm. Sorry.

I figured as much, didn't have you pegged as that kind of guy.

Naturally, the concern is that as the KHLgrows, it will become a more attractive destination for Russian and eastern european players. It is a good payday and an easier league, take Roman Cervenka as an example.

However, as the NHL salary cap rises we will be able to begin offering competitive wages again. Yakupov is a player with potential hall of fame caliber talent.

Why is that player available? There's something wrong with the player. Teams don't trade those players after less than 2 years. Eric Duhatschek wrote a column yesterday on Edmonton needing a taker for Hemsky or Yakupov and they can sucker Sather into taking one of their problem off their hands. Very nice. From: @globehockey

watch for the Rangers Oilers trade to be announced and only to see it be a dud like Pyatt for Eager  If Yakupov is available, you do whatever you can to get him within reason... Sather must do this.. Rangers have NOT had their own young franchise goal scoring player in a long time....

And Michael Del Zotto is available because something is wrong with him, too. The player he had the most chemistry with on this team was Gaborik, and he is long gone now.

NYR have a stronger and more effective power play when Moore or McDonagh are on it.

Now, all of this is irrelevant unless we know exactly what the price for Yakupov would be.

Vs. what league does the NHL not provide competitive wages?

I'm all for going after Yakupov, by why on earth would you include not one, but two of our RDs? Are you really that obsessed with McIlrath? Or do you just enjoy seeing Stu Bickel patrolling our blueline? And by patrolling, I mean turning the puck over and doing his best impression of a traffic cone.
