I got ripped for bringing up Robidas a few days ago ;)

But at this point ... seeing as how well our kids are doing at holding down the fort, and seeing as how there's a legit shot at getting at least Greene back before the end of the season, and maybe Mitchell for the playoffs, or at least back for next season. I've become more inclined to maybe just wait it out unless we can pick up a vet D man for cheap, and by cheap I mean "future considerations" / 7th Round Draft Pick type cheap ... and I get a feeling Lombardi may just be thinking this way more and more too. We've got all of 19 games left in the regular season, at the pace we're winning we're almost a lock for the #4 spot, if we cool off but at least play .500 hockey we're still in the playoffs. Heck we're only 10 points down from the Ducks it might be ... well ... maybe ... well ... ok maybe not ... well :sarcasm:.

Point being, we're most likely in a good spot for getting into the playoffs, and have the potential of getting TWO top notch Stanley Cup Champion stay at home defensemen back into the line up during the playoffs, thus having 99% of our Cup winning team back on the ice for these playoffs. Why not give the kids our faith and let them TAKE what they've worked so hard for ... IMO they are taking/earning that.
I think with the lockout, shortened season and injuries to Greene and Mitchell it won't be looked at as that much of a Failure IF we don't repeat as champions (though yes it will be disappointing), certainly nothing Lombardi will have to worry about losing his job over, and thus it might be looked at as beneficial to have our younger D-men gain the experience and development. I don't think this is your typical sink or swim throwing the rookies to the wolves kind of approach under these circumstances, and they are handling the job rather well all things considered, so why not roll with it ?

I won't be upset if we get a solid vet D man, or get a forward like Iginla in the fold for a deep playoff push, it certainly won't hurt our chances at taking a shot at repeating as Cup Champs ... BUT I think I'm more and more inclined to take our chances on what we've got ... and I'm not willing to part with too much from our current team outside of the likes of Richardson, Drewiske, low draft picks and mediocre prospects ... and likely nothing like that will return us anything like an Iginla, Marleau, Smid or Regehr type of player. So I doubt we see much movement from Lombardi, he's shrewd enough to surprise me and want to take a shot at repeating as champs, but I think he's also cautiously optimistic enough with what we already have, not to sell out the future to get it either ? :badidea:

Perfectly said and I agree 100%.

I'd be all for going after Iginla. Not because we need the scoring, but because the guy is a heart and soul player who can help make sure this team stays motivated through the playoffs. The majority of our roster just won a cup and won't be as driven to win a second one as they were to win their first. Adding a well respected vet like Iginla who's never won a cup would help make sure that the 2013 playoffs are just as important to the team as last years. A "win it for Iggy" attitude could go a long way.

And he's a pretty good player.

Not many people would be against bringing in Iginla, the question is at what cost

I'd liken it to the Ducks trading Selanne to the Sharks. If the Sharks approached Marleau about a trade and he had a say in where he wants to go, I think LA would be on top of his list mainly due to the relationship he had in the past with Dean Lombardi and Darryl Sutter in San Jose, and it isn't far from proximity to where he's living now.

As for the money, it could work if Penner doesn't return and the Kings let Scuderi walk. But then they have a hole to fill on their blueline, even if Mitchell and Greene return. I know some think Muzzin is ready to be a regular in the lineup, but he's not the same type of defenseman as Scuderi is. I liken Muzzin more to how Quincey plays the game, a dman with decent size and decent puck skills but somewhat shaky in his own end.

Back to Marleau, I think it would take a decent package to get him to move to a division rival, but I do think there is a fit with him and the Kings. Remember the rumor of Marleau to the Kings years back? I think the names involved from the Kings were Alex Frolov and Jarret Stoll. This was around the time when Heatley was rumored to be going to San Jose and the Kings were said to have been on the verge of acquiring Marleau in a three-team trade involving the Kings, Sharks, and Senators.
http://www.aolnews.com/2009/09/11/marleau-doug-wilson-discuss-false-trade-report/

And the bold part is where the problem lies. Ours kids have stepped up big time but letting Scuds walk is just about the worst thing I think we can do. We need him for another year or two so we don't have to throw these kids into the fire and let them fully develop.
But DL and Sutter have brought a cup to LA and I trust what they do.

Morrow is just below Doan on my toolbag list, his level of play has also decreased big time. Do not want.

This. Clifford > Morrow at this point in their careers. The guy is LT in his last season.

The only vet forward that makes sense is Iginla. The price is the only question. The other options are too expensive unless someone holds on to their cap hit, but I can't even see someone like Gaborik playing crash/bang on the boards like everyone did in the playoffs, plus I shudder to think of what they'd ask for.

The thought of losing Williams made me puke in my mouth a bit. This guy is glue.

All I'm saying is ease up. Kings are the ****ing Cup champs. Take out your frustrations on other teams' fans, not ours.

What frustration?

If you look at players with expiring contracts in 2013 and 2014, I think the following forwards may be considered as options at the trade deadline:

Jarome Iginla (2013 UFA)
Patrick Marleau (2014 UFA)
Brenden Morrow (2013 UFA)
Ales Hemsky (2014 UFA)
Matt Moulson (2014 UFA)
Vinny Prospal (2013 UFA)

What would be beneficial in acquiring a player with an expiring contract in 2014 is that the Kings will have a player under contract in case they end up letting Penner walk as a free agent this summer. They would already have a contracted player who will replace his spot on the roster.

As far as defensemen go, the Kings may probably lean more heavily towards a pure rental for the rest of the season, or, if they decide to let Scuderi walk, could look at some other options with contracts expiring in 2014.

Ladislav Smid (2013 UFA)
Ian White (2013 UFA)
Jordan Leopold (2013 UFA)
Robyn Regehr (2013 UFA)
Andrej Meszaros (2014 UFA)
Nick Schultz (2014 UFA)
Stephane Robidas (2014 UFA)
Greg Zanon (2014 UFA)
Mark Stuart (2014 UFA)
Mike Weaver (2014 UFA)

You can add Dan Boyle to that list. TSN even said they are willing to shop him if they fall out of the playoff picture. He's a UFA after next season.

And who was the GM to get Selanne to San Jose from Anaheim? Dean Lombardi.

DL would be willing to work a trade with San Jose for Marleau if the price is right. I just doubt it due to the salary cap situation next year.

Boyle is an interesting trade prospect for the rest of the league. Gotta be a lot of teams out there who think an offensive defenseman like him can put them over the top.

The Kings will not be trading for Gaborik. He carries a $7.5M cap hit next season, a season where the cap is going down. Iginla makes a hell of a lot more sense since he is a rental and desperate to win a Cup.
There is a rumour on the Flyers board that the trade would be Richards for Gaborik. He's signed through next year so I don't think there is anything to it since his cap hit is higher than Richards'.

How does that trade make any sense? Lombardi values centers over wingers.

That sounds more like a Philly trade.

This can't be serious.

Or did they accidentally leave the "on" off the end of his name?

Why are the Rangers so eager to dump Gaborik?

Even after winning the cup I think I'd take a break from the Kings if they made this trade.

No chance that is happening. I'll post a video of me eating my Richards Kings jersey if it does

I said the same thing! I'm not home now and don't have my laptop but there was talk on twitter about it and it came from a website out of New York. If I have time tomorrow I'll dig up the link.

Considering iggys age and devotion to the flames organization I feel that Feaster might let him go for cheap to the kings like a Gagne kind of trade. Reunite him with Sutter and people he knows. But then again it's Feaster but hopefully if they do consider his choices as the kings maybe we can get him cheap.

Are you sure? Im reading the boards and they are talking about cap space from buying out either richards or gaborik, not trading.

The buying out of Brad Richards has been out there a while. I saw the comment on the Flyers' board and also on a twitter feed but I can't remember whose it was, I won't be home till tomorrow night to check. But it was definitely Mike Richards and a lot of Ranger fans didn't want him cause he was signed till 2020.

Edit: Found it, hope this works cause I'm on my BlackBerry:

They're just mad because they got the WRONG RICHARDS - and we got the RIGHT RICHARDS !

Obvious lame Joke ... I know but you knew someone was going to go there, I just saved you guys all the time waiting for him to show up :sarcasm:

:shakehead also ... you gotta love the arrogance of New Yorkers, that article/blog, they wouldn't mind seeing Mike Richards wearing a Blueshirt, or picking up Rob Scuderi as someone the Rangers have their eye on as a rental ... ummm HELLO **********, you're barely in a playoff spot at #8 while we're sitting rather nicely in that #4 spot, so WHY would we be trading away our guys to you again ?

I'm sorry but how is this a rumor? The author clearly states that "HE" would like Mike Richards, there's nothing there suggesting Richards for Gaborik other then the author saying he likes him.

I love how all the NYR fans are saying Voynov is who they'll be getting back for Gaborik lol, one guy also called Williams a 3rd liner.... wow

It started on the Flyer board. Someone there said his dad heard it on the radio. Don't shoot the messenger.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to shoot the messenger at all, but something on radio is different but in that article the author just states he likes Richards, only type of evidence is Dennis Bernstein saying Rangers have talked to LA about Gabby.

Lombardi LOVES Mike Richards he aint being traded for Gabby or ever as long as DL is here as far an I'm concerned.
