Callahan isn't Crosby. He isn't carrying the offense regularly.

Obviously. The team can't score, though. We're going to solve that by trading a good second line winger for a 1st round pick that likely won't even be on the team for a few years in any capacity?

Callahan and Zuke is better than Zuke and someone worse than him or Callahan. They need to score. They aren't going to score more by demanding more of Zucc and trading Callahan for some picks.

You aren't going to solve that by paying a 2nd line RWer 6.5 million/season for 7 years who plays a physical game and whose body has already started to show the effect.

A guy, who getting potentially paid 6+, has never scored 30 goals a season or past 55 points. Cally is not going to make or break the Rangers offensively either way. He is a great role player and a valuable guy to a contender.

But I feel he has run his course with this organization.

At what term would you all be comfortable resigning our UFA's? There has to be a contract length and cap-hit that determines whether they re-sign or are traded at the deadline. If I'm Glen, I give the UFA's the best, fairest ultimatum contract that NYR can and if they ask for more I send them at the deadline for the best return. You can't "hope to re-sign them before the season is over". We can't get caught with our pants down in the offseason.

Personally, these are the absolute maximum terms that I would consider re-signing each player more valuable to the club than any return that said player can bring back in a trade. Bare in mind, there are currently 10 contracts signed and 29 million available this offseason.

Ryan Callahan - 6 years x 5.7 = 34.2
Dan Girardi - 6 years x 5.5 = 33
Anton Stralman - 4 years x 3.3 = 13.2
Derick Brassard - 3 years x 3.7 = 11.1
Brian Boyle - 2 years x 1.9 = 3.8
Dominic Moore - 1 year x 1.3 = 1.3
Justin Falk - 2 years x 1.1 = 2.2

BUYOUT: Brad Richards = 6.6

Total = 29 - 22.5 + 6.6 = 13.1 million in cap space to fill out the roster.

I didn't include Chris Kreider or John Moore because it's apparent that Sather will re-sign them each to bridge deals, and I don't see their contract statuses as up for debate.

Interested to learn what everyone thinks and gauge the success of Sather's upcoming moves.

Yea but does Big Glen feel the same way? Doubtful.

Who would you rather have next year... cally or miller? Assuming he's ready

It doesn't matter. I'm not in charge of personnel decisions.

How long are you asking me the question for? 1 year? Callahan. 5 years? Miller.

This team is geared for now. Now. Now. Everyone should realize that. We're in it for the now. As much as I hate that there is probably no future planning going on with this club, our window is now.

Meaning we're likely looking at Callahan, Girardi, Boyle, and the likes all returning next season.

The one thing that gives me hope for turnover is that we have a new coach. He'll have a big say in who remains, who doesn't.

He had some serious skill in Vancouver with the Sedin's. On this team, his skill is more evenly distributed, but I'm not so certain he'll have it that way.

There will be turnover, but Sather is in it for the now. So what does that mean? That means if we trade Callahan, IF (big if), we'll trade him for someone veteran.

I'd love Miller on this team, I think he'd be better for us than Poo, but both Sather and AV prefer the vets.

I think we see at most 2 rookies in uniform for us on the defense next year, and at most 2 rookies for us on the offense next year. I personally believe Kristo is going to be ready... in reality I don't think he sniffs the NHL for another year and a half unless it is for another organization. I think Miller will lock a spot for next year, on the 3rd line. Lindberg (MAYBE) on the 4th line, if he really really impresses.

Aside from that, get ready for some more veteran players. AV likes a fast paced game. Girardi doesn't fit that, Cally fits it better. I think it's more likely we trade G than C. That being said, I think the team's success hinges on Girardi more than it does on Callahan... quite the conundrum.

Up until a few days ago, I was fairly certain that both would be resigned, that we'd be big time buyers at the deadline and try to make noise with the personnel we have on board. After these last few games... I'm not so certain. I thought DZ would have been traded for some offense. We got a stay at home defensive defender for him. Removes leverage from Girardi's camp. Had we gotten a similar player to Cally for DZ I would be saying the same thing about him. Even more telling is AV experimenting with Klein and Stralman moving up slots, with Girardi moving to the 3rd pairing.

The deadline is a little under 2 weeks away. Girardi's price will be a huge one to pay for whichever team trades for him. I'm more than expecting a big time offensive chip to be coming our way if we trade G. Not prospects, someone established. Stastny? Kessler? I could even see us trading Girardi to someone like the Kings for Mike Richards and something else. I would imagine Cally stays, Girardi goes.

Honestly, the more I think about it. I think Cally and Girardi are getting shipped off in a package.

That would hypothetically yield a MASSIVE dividend.

No one will pay fair value for that together. They'd have to be shipped separately to maximize return.

Damn, if one the top teams could but together a package to get both of them they'd have to be favorites going into the playoffs. Can't see a competing team have the cap space or assets for both though

That package for rent would give a good draft pick(s), an elite prospect, and a plug Dman.

That would seem fair.

Doesn't matter for rent. Teams get desperate, go all in and overpay regardless of a players UFA status.

Separate the two and you can get 3 top prospects and 2 1sts between the 2 of them. That's a lot of value.

I'd much rather package Miller in a trade to get some real scoring while his perceived value is high(er). I like Miller a lot, but he's another Callahan. Get a couple productive seasons and the rest are mediocre at best. Don't entirely see what everyone else sees in him.

He is only like Callahan in a superficial sense(i.e two way forward). He is a natural center who can play hard nose like Cally, but he also has the vision and playmaking ability that Cally does not. He is also a bigger kid with a much higher athletic ceiling.

Miller is our future 2nd line center imo. He is even more of sure thing in the long run than someone like Stepan.

Callahan gave us many productive seasons... like 6-7... and could conceivably get us another 4-5.

He came up at like 23/24. Miller could be 21 when he starts his consistent professional career.

AV testing life after Girardi is very interesting to me.

He would get us the most return of our current players eligible to be traded.

Again, would love Silfverberg and that Ott 1st from Anaheim in exchange.

Go on Anaheim's board and ask them what they part with for Girardi, the answer is their 1st and a B prospect. Think Bouwmeester trade when Stl ***** the Flames.

Good return on a sell low MDZ situation I believe.

Honestly I could give 2 ***** about what Anaheim fans think Girardi is worth. To be honest, it holds absolutely no relevance on what he is actually worth.

He's the best available UFA defender, best available defender period. Teams will overpay, even if its not the Ducks. Supply and demand. Not nearly enough supply of defenders available, especially elite ones. Girardi is 1st pairing material, reliable, always playing, defensively responsible, with leadership and playoff experience.

You're gonna tell me that conceivably the 29th pick and a B level prospect is fair value for that? Good joke.

29th pick would be serviceable. But considering the pick would be low in the first round, the prospect would need to be an elite sure thing guy with pedigree.

Callahan has been in the league for ~7-8 seasons now, and his first 2 weren't productive. I exaggerated a bit, he's given ~4 productive/real leadership-material seasons, but is playing almost nothing like he used to on a regular basis. Hard to see the jump in his game anymore nightly. I can't recall the last time this season Cally really laid the boom down on someone. His shorty against whoever a couple games back was huge, but one of the few memorable things I can muster up from this season. Last season, don't remember him really taking charge during most games when it was needed either.

I just think we could actually use our iffy/borderline assets for once to get someone who's already producing in the NHL instead of hoping and praying, then sort of settling because he's a home-grown. Miller is one of the few 1st rounders from 2011 who's not a staple in the NHL already. There's about 4-5 others who aren't yet, including Miller.

No way we would get that much for Girardi, I don't even think they'd trade Reilly Smith straight up...
