Rumor: Trade Rumor Thread Part VI: Gaborik for Peanuts

Marian Gaborik info

Gaborik had dinner with his agent last night.

"I know Marian can go five games and have two goals a game," Wright said. "All of a sudden everyone is fine."

Until that happens, trade speculation that goes back to the offseason is only going to intensify. Gaborik has a no-trade clause that allows him to pick eight teams before each season to which the Rangers can trade him. That list has been submitted as it is before every season.

But Wright made it clear there won't be any request from their end for a trade.

"Marian is a team guy," Wright said. "He's not the type of guy who would ask out."

The problem is, it's not easy finding a trade partner willing to take on that salary. Talking in general terms, one NHL GM said teams moving a contract like Gaborik's should expect to take salary back in the deal.

"It's such a big commitment," he said. "If anything, you're talking like for like. If a guy is a $7 million player you're unhappy with, you may be able to move him. You might get a $7 million player they're unhappy with back."

Interesting. The agent told Custance the details of the limited no trade clause. Same one Sather gave Roszival and Redden.

If he was a righty and cheaper, I might be interested. Would be nice to have his shot on the PP though.
He can play either side without issue. I've never considered his shot a plus asset, though.

Bouwmeester is playing incredible hockey right now, but I agree, it would make no sense for this team. And I personally don't care in the slightest if he's an underachiever. What he does achieve is impressive, even if your mind's eye suggests he should achieve more.

Not taking back $7M in salary. Gaborik's deal expires in 2014. As an example. Hornqvist will be a group II w/arb rights this summer. His QO is $3.25M. He can file for arbitration and settle for a little more. Say its $3.5M. $4M difference. Not $7M.

Imagine Gaborik walks and signs with isles . How many goals think he'd score with JT if PAP scored 30 with him

Redden and Rozsival had an 8 team list where they couldn't be traded to. Gomez had a 3 team list. Are those details about Gaborik picking 8 teams he can be traded to correct? It was the reverse with the other players.

I think we have to assume it is, as its the first time we've heard details about his NTC. He's a better player than Redden and Rozsival, so it makes sense.

If that is true, then the Ranger better be seriously looking at a few possibilities.

The agent was quoted in the article. Custance got it from him. 8 teams on the list which Gaborik can be traded to. Perhaps Custance got it mixed up. It was the opposite with Rozsival and Redden. Sather can always go back to Gaborik and Wright for a team not on the 8 team list of teams Gaborik can be traded to without his permission. Its only 1 year.

Think Nashville would be willing to do Hornqvist and Fisher for Gaborik?

Would address a serious depth issue up front.

Buyout Richards in the summer of 2014 and use that savings to resign Lundqvist, Cally and Girardi.

Not sure if this has been mentioned at all yet, but on NHL Live today EJ Hradek said that the Rangers are interested in Mike Ribiero.. wish I could find a link to it but I can't right now so if/when I do I'll post it here

I saw that. He was mentioning teams he thought would be good fits for the top 5 rentals. EJ is one of the guys who doesn't believe Stepan is a top 6 center.

Doubt Mike Fisher-Underwood accepts a trade out of Nashville.

That would be the type of Gaborik trade that would interest me, though. A scoring winger and a defensive center that can score.

I don't see how you can argue he's not a top 2 center, let a top 6. ;)

His 5 goals and 8 assists is pretty impressive considering they were all from the neutral zone, then.

True that :) But I'd rather use his last three seasons as sample size. 4 goalsa year. And yes, by a coincidence, that sample size happens to support my case

Truth be told, I haven't watched much of him since he left Florida. I remember him playing the right side down there pretty well, and he had a good, low shot from the point that just seemed to have eyes. Wasn't a big shot, but always found seams to sneak through.

I was hoping we'd be players when he came up as a FA, but I never would have offered him that kind of money.

I would say those Sens fans are in the minority. If you read the trade thread on the Ottawa board you'll see that most aren't interested in trading Zibanejad.

The Sens are not a contender right so now it doesn't make sense to trade away our top forward prospect other than Silfverberg for a 31-year old guy signed for only 1 more year. Zibanejad is going to be part of the team for the next decade. Sens would be much better off saving the 7.5M to spend on a UFA rather than trade away long term assets.

So instead of the Grenning/Zibenejad/1st package, you think what's actually doable is:
Grenning/Silverberg/1st + X
for
Gaborik + Y

Not sure if this has been mentioned at all yet, but on NHL Live today EJ Hradek said that the Rangers are interested in Mike Ribiero.. wish I could find a link to it but I can't right now so if/when I do I'll post it here

Ribeiro gets under my skin. Probably a guy I'd like if he was wearing a Rangers sweater, but as an opponent, I just want to kick him in the face.

My feelings exactly...he's a quietly dirty player, and always seems to be complaining to the refs.

Nashville's first offer would be Erat and Legwand :p:

It's the diving that really gets me.

I in no way want to see Ribeiro on the Rangers. I don't care how skilled he is. I feel the same with with Briere.

So instead of the Grenning/Zibenejad/1st package, you think what's actually doable is:
Grenning/Silverberg/1st + X
for
Gaborik + Y

That only makes sense if X # Y and X > 0 and Y > 0

Otherwise you can have this situation

X=Y
X*X = Y*X
X^2 = X*Y
X^2 - Y^2 = X*Y - Y^2
(X+Y) (X-Y) = Y(X-Y)
simplifying by removing (X-Y)
X+Y = Y.
Which means Sens have to give us double of what we give them

:sarcasm: :naughty: :D
