The thing about MDZ is that he brings something no one else brings on our blueline. That said he's not great at anything. There's not one aspect of his play that is well above average. Then again, he's not a #1 or #2 D-man. Still I'm warming up trading him.

What does he bring? People call him a puck-mover, I don't see these great passes he makes consistently. Maybe a random home-run pass to Gaborik or Nash. McDonagh and Girardi make those passes too. He doesn't join the rush more than anyone else. He doesn't create chances on the blue-line with the puck. What does he bring?

I still think he's our best puck mover like you said. 41 points in his 3rd year is pretty good. The PP sucks (partially his fault) and he still put up 41 points. He's easily our most talented offensive D-man.
 
What are the odds Richards is bought out next summer if his play doesnt improve?

I doubt it happens but you never know. Being bought out 3 years after you sign a 9 year deal looks great for our management.
 
I have to say, I am actually starting to be in favor of trading Boyle for no other reason than to hopefully get someone with a little more skill on the 3rd line.

That's up for debate. I personally think it should be a slam dunk to buy him out regardless of if his play improves (which I'm sure it will).

You are definitely taking a short term hit by losing MDZ in a trade, but the gamble is that the long term gain is better by hitting on a #1/#2 center in ROR than the short term loss by dealing a #4 defenseman in MDZ.

Long term, MDZ should be replaced adequately by guys already nearing readiness in our system (McIlrath soon, Skjei not too long after).

Do you think you are costing yourself a cup chance this year by dealing a top 4 defenseman? If so, the Rangers will have to pony up some other cheaper asset for a rental at the deadline to fill that hole.

Yeah, its a body on defense, but neither are offesnsive dman.

I wouldn't be so sure. This is the way Gomez looked. People forget Gomez had 70 and 58 points his (2) seasons in NY. Not exactly terrible production. He played with an old Naslund and Shanahan.

Brad Richards had 66 points last year. On pace for an 82 game schedule of 60. Scary the similarities.
 
We need to get outta that contract, but I just doubt management would be willing to buy him out so quickly after signing.

Richards doesnt look good this year whatsoever.
 
I cannot comprehend Richards's drop-off in play. Last year he looked slow at time but was still an impact forward. He wasn't quite the same as the year before in Dallas, part of which I chalked up perhaps erroneously to his concussion late the previous year. He doesn't look slow, but every shot he takes is blocked, and his passes are being intercepted with a startling frequency. He looks weaker along the boards, as well.

I was sure he'd lead the team in scoring this year. Now, I'm not so certain.

I actually though he was equally brutal last January.

But kudos to pld459666 for thinking outside the box!;);):laugh:

As to return, let's not be greedy.
Even though it's not all deadwood, and due to high cash layout prior years the last 3 years are cheap cost, and even IF -- not sure --- there are some limited internal clauses as to buyout/NMC, we are still moving a huge contract after the last CBA.

If we can move him for minimum return and still retain our amnesty buyout (just in case, for whatever contingency, flexibility of it is good to have), that's worth it alone.

Again, nothing vs. Richards and his play being up or down on any given day.
In his case it is strictly about numbers,

As I was probably first to say, either he goes or you have nothing else but painful choices at some point for sure.

I wonder if the Islanders would have any interest.

They have and will continue to have a ton of cap space. Richards could slot in behind Tavares as veteran leadership for a young team.

In any case the safest route for the Rangers is to use the compliance buyout.

They may, doubt the Rangers move him there though.

No time for further detail, except that not only wouldn't I trade Kreider unless there was substantial upgrade returning, preferably at least a pre-elite, but I would big time stay away from Gonchar. I would not likely target Kessel, either, given the current club + cap make up, and the asking price, though I admit I'm always saying we can always use more snipers.

A horrendous trade for the Avalanche. They wouldn't trade McGinn alone for that crap.
