Can't see Colorado moving EJ. The reason they are looking for a LHD is because they need someone to play with EJ.

I thought they had too many defensemen and they have quite a few young players pushing as well. Maybe they feel they have enough defensive defensemen already?

That represents too much of a weakening of the backend. What would that leave - Staal, McD, Girardi & Stralman all playing 25-26 minutes a night? Gilroy and O'Brien playing 8-10 minutes each?

Yup.

I don't think Dater realizes the wizardry of Glen Sather in trades.

I know there's been talk of that but, that's a costly buyout no? Plus wasn't Richards contract front loaded so his actual salary was peanuts later on? Team looking to reach the floor would like be interested.

Unfortunately, even if Richards is a ~70+ point guy the next two seasons, the new CBA made not buying Richards out (not necessarily this offseason) a huge risk, due to the cap hit benefit recapture penalties for pre-lockout long term deals.

Having O'Reilly would make having to bite the bullet and buyout Richards a lot more stomachable, and O'Reilly + Stepan as your top 2 centers would not be a bad combo at all.

Yeah it makes sense for the Avs, and as much as I would like to add a player like ROR, I don't do it for DZ. This kid Barrie hasn't proven he can play the sort of defense that DZ can, and provide even strength points. Add to the fact that DZ didn't let his contract fiasco escalate, and has shown the ability to play at a high level with consistency (Powerplay aside).

ROR upgrades the middle for sure, but the rangers spend most nights counting on five defense, you take one away, especially a reliable work horse, then you're losing a lot of quality minutes out there, both on O and D.

If DZ quarterbacked the PP like he was hungry for PP minutes, and Richards was on track, then I wouldn't even buy into this rumor. If Slats can somehow pull one out here, maybe something around Boyle or Stralman, but Sherman will want to make a deal like EJ trade I'm guessing.

Anyone know whats up in COL and all the young malcontents there? Wolski, Meuller, Duchene, Statsny, Stewart, ROR? Young players showing signs of high level hockey in recent years but not becoming a star or a franchise player?

For anyone who watches the Aves play, how is ROR's skating? We are very slow down the middle, and if losing DZ means we get quicker at center, I would be very OK with it.

Only looking at skating ability, any comparables on the Rangers?

Yup.

I trust Sather when it comes to trades, history has shown it many times...However, I don't understand the reasoning behind this supposed Rangers interest in weaking their defense, especially is lone offensive Dman:huh:

We are not getting Erik Johnson. He is currently injured, and the Aves are not trading their #1 D and the only guy who knows what he's doing in the defensive zone.

Stralman can play top 4 minutes, but the issue of offensive dman does present a problem.

The Rangers have checked in on Ryan O’Reilly, but are very unlikely to pursue a deal for Colorado’s unsigned restricted free-agent center, The Post has learned.

It is not the yet undetermined cost in assets that the Blueshirts — whose three-game winning streak ended with Thursday night’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Islanders at the Garden — would have to send to the Avalanche in order to acquire the 22-year-old pivot, but rather O’Reilly’s asking price for a contract that is discouraging a pursuit by general manager Glen Sather.

O’Reilly, who recorded 55 points (18 goals, 37 assists) a year ago in the third and final season of his Entry Level contract, has rejected Colorado’s two-year offer of $3.5 million per that the Rangers would be hard pressed to improve upon, let alone match, given the team’s looming cap crunch for next season. O’Reilly also has rejected offers of up to five years with a slightly lower annual average salary.

I'm not interested in paying his salary and giving up the talent it will take to acquire him... just not a good match, unless they want Richards in return (and thats not even because he's sucked this year, rather than getting out of the contract)

There was talk in intermission of the canadians game that the rangers had offered a package including Del Zotto for a package including O'Reilly and a defenseman.

Thats really all that was said.

But apparently colorado kept asking for more and talks broke off.

Shame we don't have our 1st rounder this year and offer sheets are so taboo, because I would love to throw a 2 year poison pill offer sheet at him and use him as a rental. Something along the lines of:

2012-2013 salary: 3m
2013-2014 salary: 6m (with most of the money coming via a signing bonus during the summer(

Colorado is then left with either taking a 1st + 3rd rounder as compensation, or having to pay O'Reilly $6m next year (without being able to trade him before the big payout during the summer signing bonus) and if they matched, it would basically be a rental contract for them and O'Reilly would become a UFA next summer, because his qualifying offer would be $6m.

Maybe the Rangers don't want to pay DZ in his next contract. Sather could say he would rather pay O'Reilly than DZ. Newport Sports reps both players.
