Are people not worried about injury to our D? Especially considering the style of game we play, I'm extremely concerned about our D staying healthy, especially in the playoffs.

I think getting ROR+Dman from Avs is absolutely great value for MDZ. It DOES make our team better (I've come around to this after some thought). I just find it uncomfortable how we are one defenseman injury away from having serious issues.

I guess if the deal presented itself, we pull the trigger and trust Sather find another D man before the deadline. I'm sure he knows we need depth on D for a playoff run.

What about injuries to our centers? If Richards or Stepan gets injured, we'd be pretty boned. You could look at it from the perspective.

Look at our top D. Staal, Girardi, and McDonagh have been ironmen for the majority of their careers. Staal looks 100% healthy from the injury last year, and McDonagh/Girardi are built like steel. As long as those 3 are in the lineup, and we have Stralman to round it out, I'm not worried. Besides, if DZ is going to COL, then a D is 100% coming back, or Sather has a deal in place for an extra D.

For once, I trust Slats.

Yup, this.

The Vancouver Canucks had the same problem in their cup season. Their d-men fell like flies and they used scrubs as fillers in the lineup for the Stanley Cup finals.

You're one Staal/McDonagh/Girardi injury from the season being over. Which is why it's important to have Del Zotto here.

Well Canucks clearly should have traded all their centers for more defensemen.

We're not trading a top 4 defensemen for Callahan.

Ok. Right now, if Stepan or Richards get injured, then what? Brian Boyle is your 2C?

You seem to only worry about the defense being injured.

Name me a team that wouldn't be significantly worse if one of their top 2D went down.

You can't have a perfect team. I just think that trading DZ for ROR + a 4/5RD makes a lot of sense for this hockey team.

Different scenarios.

The defense here IMO, is more prone to get injured than our centers. They block an absurd amount of shots, extended shifts, playing tight on receiving end of opponents' forecheck and are heavily relied upon by Torts. If Richards went down, I still think we're a good enough team to win with our defense and goaltending.

A 3rd line defensemen is more valuable than a #1 center.

Strange sort of world.

For the Rangers, he's NOT their #1 center (if he even is one). He would be their #3 behind Richards (who has to get his head out of his ass), and Stepan.

2. There is no guarantee he's a #1 center.

The main thing in hockey is balance.

We have an overload of valuable defenseman; less so with our centers/forwards.

Adding O'Reilly gives us a balanced offensive lineup, and even with DZ being removed, the top-4 defense is still better than most, and the bottom pairing is still OK, depending on the defenseman coming back with ROR. Gilroy has looked solid this season.

I would LOVE to see this forum if Richards or Stepan got hurt and the centers were

Richards/Stepan
Boyle
Halpern
Powe

And this is the eventual conclusion I came to, trusting Slats that he won't leave us in a terribly vulnerable position.

Story behind the rumor from Elliote Friedman:

- O'Reilly had played his last game for COL.

- COL starts reaching out to teams about trade

- COL reaches out to NY, asks about DZ, package O'reilly+ Defenseman for DZ + ?

- Price too high based on personnel talks break off

Larry Brooks added talks broken off, Sather not balking at COL demands, not willing to consider deal with O'Reilly's current demands.

Rangers have organizational policy of 2-year bridge contracts, and will not break from it.

What guarantee is there that Richards will be the #1 center going forward?

Id trust ROR to be a #1 center before I trust Richards there.

Yes, Gilroy has looked solid so far. Will it continue? the Avs defense is HORRIBLE every single one of them outside of Johnson (who we are not getting). Emminger? Bickel is useless. If Gilroy goes back to sucking, we're left with 3 defensemen we can count out (I do not believe Stralman is in this category based on a SSS)

I would still think we have a good chance of winning with that. I'm not so sure I would feel the same if Girardi or McDonagh went down. Then, I expect the team to lose.

The defense is clearly the team's thoroughbred here.

And if Richards continues sucking we have how many capable centers? 1.5?

BTW, something to consider. Did ROR play in any league during the lockout? If not, is he in shape? I don't want to trade for him and find out he's out of shape for this year.

a report I just read said that if he signs a 2 year deal, he wants 5M per year (this is from his agent's mouth). the Rangers simply can't afford to give him that and give up a guy like Del Zotto while making the defense worse
