The resistance to a potential Callahan for St. Louis trade is staggering, I guess the "dark years" of ~99-2004 have left deep wounds in the fanbase.
St. Louis is a significantly better player than Callahan, and will likely continue to be so in the near future. In fact - I wouldn't be surprised if St. Louis continued to be a better player than Callahan until he retires.
We have a very solid core and some intriguing prospects, although our pool may not be as deep as one would want. But OTOH - thanks to the quality depth on the main roster, we don't have many spots for young guys to seize anyway.
This board has been whining and moaning that we don't have gamebreaking talent. If we trade for St. Louis we will have 4 elite players on the team, which is more than basically any team in the league bar Chicago. Add our fantastic depth on top of that and I don't see how we aren't a top-3 team in the league over the next few seasons.
IF we trade for St. Louis he will be a Ranger until he retires, as the reason for the trade is likely that he wants to play near his family - that insinuates short contracts and a hometown discount after this deal is up. I wouldn't be surprised if he had at least 3 more seasons in him after this year.
Re: Girardi for Vatanen, that would be amazing. Imagine the two trades going through, this would be our lineup (when Zucc gets healthy):
Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Kreider-Richards-St. Louis
Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello
Boyle-Moore-Dorsett
McDonagh-Strålman
Staal-Vatanen
Moore-Klein
Lundqvist
Talbot
That's a perennial contender if we can keep it together (Miller will replace Richards going forward, Fast might force Pouliot out and shift Nash/Zucc to LW). Vatanen will hopefully eventually supplant Strålman on the top pairing - either in 2014-15, or in 2015-16.
