Well, it could just be the callahan camp asking for one and Sather saying no.

It really seems like both parties want to move on but are throwing enough info out there so they could both claim that they tried.

Been saying since January that it looked like there was never any intent to bring him back.

We're not contenders, as was made clear from the beatings we took this weekend.

We beat Pittsburgh and Chicago: "Wow look how we moved the puck", "Our defense was fantastic", "We need one more player to put us over the top and take us to the SC Finals"

We lose to Philly and Boston: "We are pretenders", "Let's rebuild", "This clearly isn't working"

Story of it ... you're not as good as you look when you're hot and you're not as bad as you look when you're cold. Truth is somewhere in the middle. Just my 2 cents.

Yep.

I don't care about trading Cally for the "new and shiny." I just want the flexibility at this point.

If they want to move him just for draft picks...oh well..

Flexibility for what?

For Sather to sign Stastny for 7 years?

Trading Callahan seems to be the right move -- my issue is that Sather has shown virtually no ability to make 2 right moves (or in this case, a non-move following a Callahan trade) in a row.

Im in agreement, and my post wasnt necessarily directed at you.

Moreso towards the dozens and dozens of posters who have showed their true stripes and hypocrisy by blasting Callahan and then endorsing stupid trades that further hurt the franchise.

Yea, I think we're on the same page. I love Cally but I certainly don't want to see him kept for 6 mil +

It makes me cringe a lot more to see Stepan and Miller packaged for an oft-injured player like Kesler though.

Thing is, most people advocating for that only see Kesler for what he was. Most don't watch him nowadays.

It's easy to see what Callahan has become, but if you saw Kesler on a regular basis, it's just as insane, if not more.

Hardly anyone wants to keep Cally @ 6+M.

Or, you can look at the whole season and say wow, outside of a 15 game stretch, this team really hasn't been consistent at all.

That's not a sign of a cup winner.

Not to mention, and i know it's been beaten to depth, but there is no cup to be had, with Stepan anchoring our first line.

This pretty much defines New York rangers fans

I do. I care about it quite a bit, actually, primarily because what he did under Torts makes up the vast majority of his playing career. And unlike the vast majority of people here, I think evaluating a player based on one half season with numerous factors affecting his play is extremely foolish.

I'm not asking you to. I don't really get the point of this comment. Do you want me to stop posting my opinion and just read you (all of you) post the same redundant denigration of Callahan and calls for him to be traded/not re-signed?

I get it, too. Generally, when the vast majority of this board agrees on something regarding a major roster move, they turn out to be dead wrong. As many people here that want Callahan gone wanted the Rangers to sign Scott Gomez and Wade Redden. As many people here that want Callahan gone wanted the Rangers to do X number of things that would have been disasters if they had went down. So I'm not too worried about the fact that most people here disagree with me.

Pretty difficult to establish a trend based on one half season, since so many players struggle for even an entire season and regain their previous level of play. Trends require several examples to become trends. One of anything is not a trend.

Apparently it isn't, because AFAIC, over the last few years, Ryan Callahan has displayed far more commitment and respect toward the name on the front of the jersey than anyone else associated with the team (perhaps with the exception of Henrik Lundqvist, who certainly didn't take much of a hometown discount, nor should he have). AFAIC, the Rangers have been giving me a big "**** you" for as long as I can remember, routinely putting out subpar products and making it less and less affordable for me to remain a diehard fan. The Rangers have been mailing it in as far as running the franchise. The Rangers have refused to sacrifice anything in order to build a real winner.

Ryan Callahan has shown that he is willing to sacrifice far more for the good of the team than the team itself. Ryan Callahan was one of the things that made watching Ranger games enjoyable for a number of years when the team, with very few exceptions, was a steaming pile of boring *******. And Ryan Callahan is still enjoyable to watch, even when he isn't scoring as much as he has in the past, because of how many other things he still does right, even during an unarguably poor season for him so far.

Nice post. I can say that if Callahan is moved there is a large part of me that will be very upset about it. Similar feeling to when Dubi was traded.

I think any Callahan move is done today.

Callahan isn't the only move that will be made by Sather this deadline.

Stralman is going to be moved, IMO. Hags might be dealt with. A decision on Brassard will have to be made.

4 players that have to be dealt with by tomorrow at 3. Cally is the biggest and hardest deal. I think Sather deals with him today. If he's not dealt by today I think he's a Ranger for the next 6 years.

Exactly.

If Callahan was in this situation with another team, the Rangers fanbase would see him for what he WAS as well.

Can't tell if serious.......

Callahan HAS my gratitude, he does, really. He lays it on the line every night. That does not mean I can't say that I'm upset with the contract situation, and say that I would prefer if the Rangers walk away from a deal that will, in my belief, be a burden in the future.

Again, again, again, (how many times do I have to say it) I am not MAD at Callahan for asking for that money because I DO believe he will get it on the open market. I am MAD at SATHER for bringing 6x$6m to the table in the first place.

Completely serious. Especially the part about sacrificing his dream of being an accountant in Rochester.

No. I wasn't serious. Sting made some snarky comment to you about how your posts weren't exactly oozing with gratitude. I didn't realize we were obligated to be grateful to these guys who live star crossed lives we could never dream of when they hold out for the difference between 36 and 39 million dollars.

Yeah, people like to spend the Rangers money before they even get it. Not signing Callahan to an unreasonable contract is likely best for the franchise. However turning around and handing that money + some to a slight upgrade over Stepan is idiotic. You can thank beat writers like Zipay for pushing ideas like that along.

I dont think Hagelin or Brassard go anywhere

Callahan for Vatanen or Etem. Get it done Slats :)

I personally don't think Anaheim's system of prospects has top 6 wingers on it. Etem and Palmierri don't seem like they'll stick in this league. Everyone loves Etem. I started buying the hype. Then I started watching some highlights of him and I watched when he was called up. Not impressed in the slightest.

I'd much rather hold out for Silfverberg. He's a stud.

Silver, stop. You OWE Callahan your gratitude and your posts do not show any. Don't you know that it's gratitude that they play for and not the massive paychecks that they get because we buy tickets, buy merchandise and watch every night on TV. Callahan has sacrificed himself for this team. He could be doing his dream job, helping people file their taxes in Rochester, but he sacrificed that to keep you entertained and you're not showing him enough gratitude.

The guy makes money (good money) playing hockey, something he loves doing. There's not a fan on the face of the earth that owes an athlete anything. If anybody owes someone gratitude, it's the athletes to their fans for contributing to their paycheck.. Seriously?

I guess the longer this stretches on after noon with no updates the better? Or are they involved in one last negotiation and delaying the inevitable?

UGH.

Gotchya. Sometimes it's hard to tell on this board ;)

And, let's get real here, it's $36 million and $37.8 million.

OH THE HORROR :sarcasm:

What (resigning) Cally supporters fail to realize here is that if we DO sign Cally @ 6mm + for 6 years; he won't produce enough to validate that contract, and in turn....

The nostalgia is going to fade, and the resentment will build. The jersey's will stop selling.

Another reason to part ways NOW.

I dont think Hagelin or Brassard go anywhere

I think Hagelin has a much higher probability of being moved (if moved) than Brassard does.

I think Fast fits the system more effectively. Same speed. Same function. Better creativity, puck possession, and offensive ability.

I thought the sarcasm was obvious when I said he could be helping people file their taxes for a living but sacrificed that dream for us.
